Do you by chance know what the useful prop range might be for the OS160fx? Trying to determine if there might also be a problem with the ultrasport installation especially with retracts. Thanks, Rich.

With the 17 or 18" props on the os160fx, in your opinions do you think I will have adequate ground clearance for the prop? Or will I need to use taller main retract struts?

I'd say you need about 1" of ground clearance when the airplane is sitting on its wheels and the tail is up and level- takeoff attitude.

OK, it might be tricky, but I'll check the plans and see if I can obtain an estimated ground clearance measuring 9" from the center engine shaft (for an 18" prop) to see how far above ground the prop tip would be using the stock mains and 3" wheels that might be built with the kit. I just measured a set of plans I have and when the wing centerline is parallel to the ground - 0 incidence -  there is 9 1/2 inches to the prop hub. A 16 inch prop would give you 1 1/2 inches clearance.

How bout that; we're spot on! I measured also using the same technique and got about the same. The plans said to use 2 3/4" inch wheels for retracts. So when I measured from the engine centerline to the line for ground on the bottom of the wheel, I got about 9 1/2" too. So a 18" prop wouldn't give enough clearance, but the 16" give about 1 1/2". So then I checked the APC web site and they offer 16" props starting at 3" pitch all the way up to 16" pitch. Then I downloaded the manual for the engine from the tower site and it calls for several 16" props and one 16.5" prop for aerobatic use. It also lists a couple of 17" and one 18" prop for sportsman use. So now I am happy and excited, because I think I can get the 160 installed OK. This engine didn't exist back in the 90's, weighs less than the ST2500, and is about the samesize as the os108 and puts out 3.7HP! Also took measurements from the motor mount and engine from the tower site and measured the plans, and it will fit nicely. So my winter project is laid out.

But gotta also figure out the retract install.

BTW, I'm planning to use an os engine mount, but it doesn't have any vibration isolators. I saw Jtec's snuff vibe kit, but wasn't impressed because you have to drill out you new motor mount to use it. Do you know of any other vibration mounts that are popular? Thanks, Rich

If your prop is balanced and the firewall is solid, you won't have any problems. I am using the OS aluminium predrilled mount for mine. I have found the Xoar props are almost always balanced or require very little to get them that way. My favorite props lately are the Falcon props. I use these on everything up to a DLE111 and I have only had maybe one out of around 15 that needed any balancing.

Other that trial and error, is there a process to determine your engine requirements for a new engine? Have you started building your 1000 yet? Richwill:

The best way to get the right prop to start with is to find out what other people are using. Do NOT go by the OS prop recommendations. They are intentionally oversized to keep the rpm, and therefore the noise, down for their European and Japanese markets. You will get much better performance and a lot lower operating temps by using the 18 x 6W or 16 x 8 three blade mentioned above.

Rich, Mezjlik andZoar are 2 companies that make 3 bladed props. They are not cheap!!
I haven't started mine yet and won't until my house renos are done. Probably around Christmas. I have had 2 Ultrasport 60's which were each over 20 years old before they finally met their end.    Lash

Master Airscrew makes a 16 x 8 and a 16 x 10 three blade. They are not the most efficient props in the world, but the 160 in a US 1000 does not need to struggle to get the last few %.

Graupner makes 16 x 8 three blade that is more efficient, but expensive. (Google "graupner prop")

Thanks for the other prop sources, guys. Lash, I won't be starting mine til around the same time or after the first of the year. I mainly want to do the research to make sure that the upgraded components that I want to use will work, and I've found that they are. Can someone comment on what prower range digital servos that I should consider. I'm thinking of Futaba or Hitec brands. Rich

Hello Rich,

I recently had an Ultrasport 1000 with an OS 160 FX. If you decide to go the analog route with your servo's, I used a Futaba 9202 on each elevator half, a 9202 on each aileron and a 9402 on the rudder. If you want to go the digital route, I suggest something in the same torque range. Personally, I wouldn't use a Hitec servo for a paper weight, but of course the choice is yours.

Oh BTW, I just remembered that Futaba doesn't make the 9202 anymore. So if you don't already have any, you will need to find an equivalent servo.
