No, thank God. I was at Castle in Merced, late '70's, early '80's, and we had an ADcom detachment there as well, the 84th FIS. Even then one could tell ADCom was being defunded and we on the SAC side all the facilities so we worked on the 6's as well. For my reenlistment they wanted to reward me with a tour in silos; once SAC got hold of you, they didn't want to let go.

Which ultra sport flies best 40, 60, 1000?

Or how is the US 1000 flies compare to the 60?

I read that the flying weight of the 1000 is between 12-14 pounds and when US1000 gets to 13 pounds there is a big degradation in flight characteristics.

Its stuck in my head to build an ultra sport with retracts and fiber glassed so I’m thinking to build the US1000 from RCM plans and short kit from laser cutter with some gas motor, retracts and fiber glassed.

I see that who added retracts to the US60 didn’t make wheel covers, why?

Gentlemen,i have just acquired my first ultra sport 40.A few questions i think only you can answer.First off it is being built as a trike gear, will add flaps.Questions invlove the engine,i have a nib O.S. 70 4 stroke and it weighs 23 oz.with prop muffler and spinner. Also a Saito FA-80 which weighs 24 oz. with the same setup. Can't decide which one to go with, and was considering mounting it inverted,if not will mount it sideways as per the plans.Have also though about putting the elevator servo in the tail if necessary to offset the engine.Thank you all,Freddy

Hi Alex, the 40 & 60 are quick on the sticks, while the 1000 flys slower and more real like. When I was younger I had the 40 and 60 love that speed, now I am in my 70's the 1000 is more my speed.

Hi Freddy, if you are looking for speed you will not get it using 4 stroke engines, if you just want a nice flying plane use the OS 70.

On my last 1000 I had a ST_3000. On this one I would like to use a DLE-30 or 50, 50 may be to big, will have to check it out. Yes to retracks only it will not be a trike.

I just came back from flying my US60 with OS 75AX. Sure flies nice. But I miss my US1000. It had an MDS 1.48 (remember those) which led to its demise......one dead stick too many. About a year after I got it, OS came out with the 1.60. If they ever rekitted the US 1000, that is what I would get.

I had an US 40 and US 40+. Both flew great with the OS 46 of the time. You could use the OS 55AX I suppose, but that starts getting a little large. If you are flying off pavement, I would do the trikes....if you are on grass like I am, the taildragger eliminates the nose gear headaches. I have another US 60 in the box and don;t know if I would choose a different engine of the next one. Plenty of power and great vertical with the 75. I did have an inverted engine with the US 40+. Inverted 2-strokes are nothing but trouble, but just my experience.

Is the ST 3000 too much engine for the 1000 or just too much motor by size of engine block? What would be the best glow engine for this guy for performance; BTW, I will use a pipe. My US 40 had an OS 46 VF with the pipe running down the right side of the fuse, very fast.

Alex, the 1000 is the slowest of all of them, & easiest to fly as the flight is just smooth from start to finish. Its not lazy by any means, just slower & smoother. I think my sixty is the best in terms of which one I have the most fun with when I fly them. The forty is still being messed with as far as triming it out & adjusting the balance to get it how I want it. The smaller "25" scratch built one is the most craziest one as far as how fast it will fly & how quick the manuvers go. It is the one I fly the most often. Its a smoother version of an angry bee in a spin dryer. The twin I scratch built only has 1 flight on it due to engine problems, but it was nice while the flight lasted. I still need to work on getting the engines issues worked out before another flight takes place. hope this helps, Bill

I dont understand why you guys think that the US 1000 is slower. My US 1000 is kit bashed but it is a 1000 and I have a ST 2300 in the front and this plane really moves thru the air even making that prop noise when I fly by at full throttle. I have not been able to catch my fellow flyer that owns a radar gun to clock it but when I do get it's speed clocked I will report it on here but at any rate my 1000 almost as fast as compared to my US 40 but the 40 is still the fastest bird in my fleet.

I hope that this bit of information is good for you there is this company that makes short kits so check these guys out. Just scroll down to the US 1000 and the US 60. If anyone buys from these guys let me know how it went and what you got I have been wondering what it is like to buy from them.

Fortunately, I have a 1000 kit; the ST 2300 might be a looker on this one, but I do have an OS 1.60 FX. whatever the case, I will need to procure a wrap around header for him.

Thanks guys,
I was thinking to put on the US 1000 a DLE-30 or the coming OS 33GT but the pounds of all of this seem on the border, but if you say the most fun is the 60 maybe I just stay with that..
my plan is winter project from a short kit

Now let me ask this: from your experience, is the 60 size more fun in terms of aerobatics and speed, or is it the 1000?
