It would require a bit of scratch building, BUT if you still wanted an IMAA legal Ultra Sport that would (should) still perform like the US60, you could enlarge the plans until you got the IMAA legal wingspan with the enlarged fuse and tail plane to match. I'm pretty well convinced that you can up-size/down-size this plan with no ill effects.

That is a great idea. Better flight characteristics and more room for a gas engine. The enlargement factor would only be 12% so you would not have to change any of the wood sizes. You could have the RCM plans blown up at Kinkos/FedEx, or use the kit plans and delete the last rib at the end of each wing.

What a great flying airplane that would be! Quick responses like the 60, and not as floaty as the kit 1000. I have a 1000 kit, but now you have me thinking.

i helped a buddy elongate the fuse, way back so i cant remember exactly how much but i think it was in the 6 to 8 inch range.

we did this by tracing the slab sides of the fuse on a peace of paper then addyng the extra distence along the turtle deck line. then adding the rudder post line parallel to and same length as the original then drawing a new bottom line to bring it all togeather. cut that out of 1/64 marine ply (because the new slab side was longer than the balsa we could get) and laminated balsa, two layers with the joints above the wing and half way between the wing te and stab le) to make the new slab sides. then built it by the numbers.

I think I would rather enlarge the plans than just elongate the fuse. But that's just my preference.

The extended wing gave the 1000 an increase in span of 12% and about 10% more wing area, so in order to give the 1000 the same ratios of area and moments as the 60, you would have to increase the length of the fuse from the CG back by 12% to offset the span increase and also increase the total area of the tail surfaces by 10% to offset the increase in the wing area. That would give you an airplane basically the same size as the kit plane. It still wouldn't fly the same as the 60 because of the higher aspect ratio wing, but it would be close. Blowing the plans up 12% gives you an airplane that is 25% larger than the kit plane, and aside from the unavoidable effects of the larger size and weight, it would fly exactly like the 60.

A 25% larger Ultra Sport 1000 (US1250?) would give a few more engine options also. Moki 2.1....50cc gas...Saito 220? A 50cc gas twin with the jugs hanging out would be awesome!

OK, I have to share with the Ultrasport Brotherhood and post this, originally completed in 1993 and have flown it religiously every year since then, Never more than a weed hole or tip wing rash or so until now. I won 5th prize in the Monokote covering contest when I completed it, hence the magazine pictures. US40 kit with O.S.61 and Dave Brown retracts as a tail dragger. I kinda put her in a coma last evening doing rolling figure 8's and she is currently resting in ICU until I can get a canopy and 6 rolls of Monokote for its resurrection this winter if I can stand looking at it in pieces that long. Going with a .46 heli motor with a pitts muffler this time instead of the heavy extremely overpowered .61 but boy did she smoke along... It will live again! My oldest daughter is in the Tower magazine ad and is the mother of my grandson who witnessed my fail in the crash pics. 21 years flying this jewel, not too shabby... "It happens" when you fly 'em like you stole 'em :-) ... how do I find my Ultra Sport brotherhood number?

Bummer! I remember those adds. Congratulations on getting her published. Remember, rebuilding her will add some weight. You may want to consider an OS 55AX. A little more oomph than the .46, but not as hot as the .61 was.

My Ultra Sport 40 with an OS 55AX is an awesome flying plane. The 55AX gives it more than enough power.

Well guys i found out that a evolution 33cc engine will work and fit just fine in my US1000 so this is the way i'm going when i build it.I will post as i go along.Mean time i will fly my 60 size which i had from back in 1997 its my favorite out of all my other planes.

I am in the process of building a US 1000 for another RCU member. We're planning for a DLE-30 to hang on the nose of it. I've "installed" it on the plans and looks like there is going to be plenty of room for the engine to go in there. One of the nice things about having a gas engine is that I can now move the fuel tank whenever I want instead of directly behind the firewall. I'm planning on moving the fuel tank, as well as a smoke tank back into the fuselage to that it's a bit closer to the CG of the plane. The owner of the plane wants a tricycle retracts on the plane so moving the tanks is needed so that I have room to put the nose gear behind teh firewall.

Ken thats right didnt think of moving the fuel tank, it is better to move it back some ,I didnt think the DLE would fit also its cheaper then the evolution 33cc.

I have made some pretty detailed graphics with the windex method. I have a Tiger head on a 4 star 40 with tiny pieces of monokote trim that haven't come off in a few years of flying. Using the solvent, whenever I finish sealing the covering with an iron, I find I have good luck if I slightly wet a Qtip with the solvent and just rub it around the edges. The color doesn't bleed, and capillary action pulls enough solvent under to hold the Monokote.

If an individual still has the Great Planes plans that came with a kit they can sell them to you. The RCM plans are still available at rcmplans.com, but I have heard that the current owner may not be filling orders at this time. Try asking him a question by email first to see if you get a timely answer. Of course if an individual has the RCM plans, they can sell them to you.

Actually, I have the US60 kit/plans. I suppose I could just up-size them into a usable IMAA plan if I really wanted a true Ultra Sport in a larger size.

There are some differences in the construction methods designed to make the 1000 lighter and stiffer. Between that and increasing the wood sizes 30+%, you would come out heavier that way than you would by blowing up the 1000 plans and using the original wood sizes. But on a 25% larger Ultra Sport 1000, it shouldn't matter much.

I did a 1000 plan increase of 10 or 20% I had foam wings made they came out to 92", one of these days I will have to start on it.

There is an US 1000 kit for sale in the Marketplace right now for very affordable price of $200. If I had any free cash I would jump on it like a duck on a junebug, but my wife just opened up an Yoga Studio so any free cash we have is pretty tied up. So anybody looking for an Ultra Sport 1000 kit, I'd jump quickly as this kit won't last long at this price.
