Howdy all,
I would like to join your Brotherhood. I have a Taipan (Ultrasport clone), but I have owned a real Ultrasport in the past.

PS If you assemble one of the Taipans, like Jim says put the dihedral back in the wing.

Thanks,
Robert

I'm not sure that we are going to allow entry off of Tiapan ownership, but your past ownership of an Ultrasport is all you need to belong

Please allow me to state my opinion on the question of Taipan membership in the Ultra Sport Brotherhood.

The Taipan is an ARF, and most Ultra Sports are kit or scratch built, so I can see that the Taipan would represent an easier way into membership. But there used to be an ARF Ultra Sport, and I am pretty sure some of the members got in based on ownership of those.

We all love the way the Ultra Sport flies, and that is really what sets it apart from all the "pretenders". I have found that with the Ultra Sport dihedral added back in, the Taipan flys just like an Ultra Sport. The other changes I made are refinements, but the dihedral really makes a difference.

If the Taipan were allowed to qualify for membership, it would probably add some new blood to the Brotherhood and it might keep the Taipan, and even the Ultra Sport in production longer.

In my opinion, if the Taipan in question has been modified to Ultra Sport dihedral specs, it's owner should be qualified for membership in the Brotherhood because he is experiencing the same great flying experience as the true Ultra Sport owner.

Jim

I do respect your reasoning here in this issue, but it's still not an Ultra Sport. While it's a copy of the Ultra Sport I'm incline to not use it as qualification for membership to the Brotherhood.

Jim
well my Ultra sport 60 now has 1600 flights on it and has had a super tiger 60 round head, supertiger 60 modern (but still made in italy) and a 5065-320 on it for power. it was built from a kit in 1986 and was purposly built with the dihedral that the Tiapan comes with. we since picked up and gave away a US60 with the recomemded dihedral because when a buddy lost his in the floood of 2006 we liked the less dihedral better. that is kind of the point of a kit, i can make it anyway i want! so we bought a Tiapan and built it with the stock dihedral cause thats the way we like it. I also left off the under the wing blocks cause they were just to much dead WT, so on electric my 28 year old US60 weights 6.5#

i have been participating in this thread since 2011 and not ask for a number cause i don't need any more things to belong too. but now i have a reason, i like my Ultra Sport 60 with less dihedral, and all the mods i made to the kit as i built it, and request to be added to the US brotherhood with half the dihedral that is recommended in the plans. pictured of both my US60 are on this thread posts 578 and 583.

my son is now and owner of a Tiapan and is hot on my butt to recover it. after that is done how would you know it is not a US60?

Robert,
Found your thread at that 'other' site. Loved it.

With what you did (stock build) and jrf's mods, I am looking forward to building mine now!

Thanks guys!!

Got 4 flights in on my US with the fixed gear last night and it worked great. The plane flew well and the wheels were there when I needed them. Had some problems with the trail wheel so I need to fix that before taking it out again.

My favorite tail wheel, never had a problem with the first one and can be retro-fitted.

I had a few questions about the way the Ultrasport60 flies… I forwarded them to this forum for all their possible questions. Many have asked if this is a first low-wing model…. not perfect for that but if handled well with low control throws and not to much engine, it could be a great trainer. I have placed my US60 in the classifieds… if anyone needs a 75% completed new kit. Thanks.

Does anyone have spare main gear wires for a US 40? Mine are ancient and have lost their rigidity.

I am very pleased with the results of my conversion of a Hobby People Taipan to a true clone of the Ultra Sport 60. (Starts at post #2339 on page 94 above.) It is a smooth and precise flyer. But I am on to the next project and I don't have the room to keep it. So it is available in the classifieds. Please take a look.

Hi Sessholvlaru. I have an unused pair of mains, but it would probably cost more to ship to you than what you could buy them form great planes for.

Default Shipping UltraSport60's around… it there a best way?

I have an UltraSort60 that is resting in the corner with no possibility of "wind-under-her-wings" so I thought I would sell her. I have had plenty of interest but not "locally" so I have had to look at as much as $95 to ship due to the wing and fuse size…. is there any knowledge out there in the UPS/FEDEX/Other world that I can use to lower this cost? The weight is not the issue. It is the box dimensions. Thanks and keep those UltraSports flying.

Thanks for the confirmation Kap2011; the tail surfaces are not glued but your right, the length of the fuse dictates the box size. It will be a while before I can handle a fast plane again. I may just keep it local in regards to moving it on to a fast flyer. If nothing else, it does look good above the workbench. Gives tha room alittle style.

All of the carriers use the box size to set the fee. Not sure about grayhound though. Even if you could remove the tail feathers you would still have length. Shipping costs mean you will have to sell it very cheap, less than $100. Better to just finish and fly it.
