Hey, I bet there are a lot of MDS 1.48;s running around. I bought one for my US1000 based on a good review by Clarence Lee in RCM. Turned out to be the worst engine I ever had. Horizon was the distributor back then and replaced the engine several times. I think the final "fix" was another carburetor as the engine was difficult to keep running. I finally had the engine set and one day, for some stupid reason I decided to change the needle valve by one click. The engine died at the wrong place and that was the end of my US1000. I sure do miss it. I bought several of the US60 kits when Great Planes came out with them again.

If I remember, the MDS 1.48 barely fit. If I had another one, I would go with the OS 120AX which would give plenty of power. The OS 1.60 was not out at the time but probably would have been way over kill. The plans do show the ST2300 which would still probably be a good choice if you had one.

Does my US 60 make me number 165?

Sorry to hear about your 1000, BelAirBob. My 60 is the best plane I've ever flown and it lost power on upwind once. It already had enough momentum/altitude to fly a whole traffic pattern and land, but only just. It, too, was caused by a mixture problem, but that was because I was new to glow engines at the time and had no idea how to properly tune them, but was stupid enough to take off with one anyway.

Im thinking of turning it into a tailwheel when I recover it next month and perhaps adding retracts. Not sure I want to make it heavier though.

I made all my Ultra Sports tail draggers. I have had too many nose gear problems over the years. I fly from grass fields and think tail draggers is the way to go and is much simplier in setting up everything.

The worst engine I ever owned was a GMS 120 that I bought after a good review by Clarence.

If you decide to use the Super Tiger, make sure you are good at dead-stick landings. You WILL have a few before you get the carb sorted out.

Hello Jim.

I had no problems with the Super Tioger after cleaning up the burrs left from machining in the caruretor spray opening. The so-called 'cat's eye .

A dead-stick landing is as simple as gliding; Hopefully to a visible ground area suitable for a flare out to a clear reasonably flat and nearly horizontal surface. Stay within gliding distance to the airport if in doubt about the reliability of the engine.

I fly from grass and asphalt, but I just prefer tailwheels in general. Lighter, less draggy, look prettier, you just have to know what you're doing on the rudder when you land (just got my private pilot license, and it bothers me I don't have my tailwheel endorsement yet). Plus they look better when you put skis on them (and winter flying is a necessity if you want to fly a lot here). Plus retracts are simpler (particularly on the US, with the fuel tank where the nosewheel would go).

As for the Super Tigres, my US60 flies with a G-61. I did have to dead-stick it once, but with the idiot problem described in my earlier post. After I sorted out the mixture (took maybe 20 minutes, including looking up how to tune it properly) it gave me no problems. That said, it's a totally different engine, so perhaps the story's not even relevant.

The OS AX series engines start very easy and have plenty of power. Any you should have no problem getting parts in the future.

OS is made in Japan, imported and sold by Great Planes in the USA. That means about half of the money goes to Japan and the rest of it stays here.

Super Tiger is now made in China so half of the money would go there.

My new OS MAX 55 AX is clearly marked on the box "MADE IN CHINA' .

When you write"half of the money goes to Japan and the rest of it stays here" is a good indication of a 100% mark up by the importer and retailer combined together.

Zor:

My OS 160FX, 61FX and 55AX boxes all say "Made in Japan". None of them are new though. Looks like OS has moved some of their production to China.

That would mean about 1/4 of the money would go to China, 1/4 to Japan and 1/2 would stay here. World trade can be pretty confusing.

All of mine over a year old are made in Japan, all AX engines, a 35, 46, 2 x 55's, 75, 95, 120, and a 160FX and BGX-1

Anything that I bought in the last year is made in China and the boxes are ever so slightly a darker blue, A 55, 65, and a 95.

Hmmm... Guess I've purchased my last OS engine. I'll buy Saitos instead.
EDIT-> I've purchased Thunder Tiger engines, Magnum all Chinese made. But if I'm going to spend the money for an OS motor it's not going to be made in China.

The OS 4-strokes may still be made in Japan. Anyone know?

Beats me, the last 4 stroke I bought was a Saito 125 about 3 weeks ago.

Tell that to someone from Taiwan, they don't like it much. Taiwan is trying to be known as producing high quality products and takes offence to being called Chinese. I think it is like one of those "it's complicated" relationships.
