Does my US 60 make me number 165?
Sorry to hear about your 1000, BelAirBob. My 60 is the best plane I've ever flown and it lost power on upwind once. It already had enough momentum/altitude to fly a whole traffic pattern and land, but only just. It, too, was caused by a mixture problem, but that was because I was new to glow engines at the time and had no idea how to properly tune them, but was stupid enough to take off with one anyway.
Im thinking of turning it into a tailwheel when I recover it next month and perhaps adding retracts. Not sure I want to make it heavier though.

I made all my Ultra Sports tail draggers. I have had too many nose gear problems over the years. I fly from grass fields and think tail draggers is the way to go and is much simplier in setting up everything.

You are correct. You would be number 165!!!

Hey, I bet there are a lot of MDS 1.48;s running around. I bought one for my US1000 based on a good review by Clarence Lee in RCM. Turned out to be the worst engine I ever had. Horizon was the distributor back then and replaced the engine several times. I think the final "fix" was another carburetor as the engine was difficult to keep running. I finally had the engine set and one day, for some stupid reason I decided to change the needle valve by one click. The engine died at the wrong place and that was the end of my US1000. I sure do miss it. I bought several of the US60 kits when Great Planes came out with them again.
If I remember, the MDS 1.48 barely fit. If I had another one, I would go with the OS 120AX which would give plenty of power. The OS 1.60 was not out at the time but probably would have been way over kill. The plans do show the ST2300 which would still probably be a good choice if you had one.

I had no problems with the Super Tioger after cleaning up the burrs left from machining in the caruretor spray opening. The so-called 'cat's eye .
A dead-stick landing is as simple as gliding; Hopefully to a visible ground area suitable for a flare out to a clear reasonably flat and nearly horizontal surface. Stay within gliding distance to the airport if in doubt about the reliability of the engine.

As for the Super Tigres, my US60 flies with a G-61. I did have to dead-stick it once, but with the idiot problem described in my earlier post. After I sorted out the mixture (took maybe 20 minutes, including looking up how to tune it properly) it gave me no problems. That said, it's a totally different engine, so perhaps the story's not even relevant.

When you write"half of the money goes to Japan and the rest of it stays here" is a good indication of a 100% mark up by the importer and retailer combined together.

My Feedback: (551)
Zor:
My OS 160FX, 61FX and 55AX boxes all say "Made in Japan". None of them are new though. Looks like OS has moved some of their production to China.
That would mean about 1/4 of the money would go to China, 1/4 to Japan and 1/2 would stay here. World trade can be pretty confusing.

EDIT-> I've purchased Thunder Tiger engines, Magnum all Chinese made. But if I'm going to spend the money for an OS motor it's not going to be made in China.
