Thanks for the good help.

Stoner,
what engine are you going to use on your US 1000?

Thanks,

Hi twin,
The engine of my liking after many thoughts will be a moki 140 with a pipe , the us deserves a 2 stroke.
I thought of putting a 120 in, but the 140 will really make it haul ass,

Carving went easy steezy, took a 2x4 cut a 10" piece and pinned 60 grit sand paper to the block and it sands very fast.

Hugh fuel tank, that Moki will be thirsty!!

Wondering how a 30-35 cc gas engine would work, but don't feel like cutting and redoing the nose on mine to find out...

My build is not turning out to my liking and is turning into a Debby downer project, would it be wise to stop and start a new kit?

What happened? It seemed like everything was going nicely? I wouldn't start a new project yet, just take your other planes and fly the heck out of them. Maybe you need a change to get over Builder Burnout.

Meanwhile, I have been struggling to get the Ultra Sport 40 (kit) that I bought to flying condition. The builder had mounted the engine in such a way that it was impossible for me to re-install it. It was almost impossible to remove the engine to unfreeze the carb. Last night I removed the old mounting method and plugged up the holes in the firewall. I will use a one-piece enigne mount next. I am debating whether to change engines as well. It came with an OS 46 SF, but I also have a Fox 45 (with tuned pipe) or a JBA 56. Any suggestions/ideas which engine is best for this plane? The Fox 45 is the lightest and shortest crankase, allowing less gap between the cowl and spinner. But it is also the weakest with a stock muffler, I have not tried it with a tuned pipe yet.

OOPS!! Don't know enough about the big Ultras to give any ideas, sorry. I would still take a break from building and go flying before deciding what to do about it. Helps clear your mind. works for me.

You seem to have done an adequate fix for the problem, and once the wing is closed, no one will see it. I've never built a kit that didn't have some kind of glitch. It's part of the building process.

Taking a break from building is good advise.

Not a bad idea. Often times, talking a break from a project can generate renewed interest later on. This is true in our hobby, and in other realms of our lives.

Update on my Ultrasport 40 restoration: I have been trying to drill the new holes in the firewall for the new engine mount, but I can't reach it with my drill gun because of the built-in balsa engine cowl. Is there a trick to this, oher than cutting off the cowl and making it removable? It would ruin the beautiful lines of the nose.

What about long (12") drill bits? they are available online if you have the clearance for them alone.

Sharpened brass tube might work but will probably require frequent resharpening during the job. Put a solid rod inside the tube for support where it enters the drill chuck.

Assuming the optimum prop for each engine, the Moki would be the fastest. The DA the slowest and the big 4 strokes in between.

Bear in mind, with a speed prop on any of those engines, the Ultrasport will fly along nicely at idle. You will have to shut off the engine to land.

Build the clipped wing version and set up spoilerons to help get it down.

I purchased long drill bits and finished reinstalling the OS 46 SF on the US 40 that I purchased used. I got to fly it last Saturday for a couple of flights and was really impressed. That is the only time I ever flew any US. I think it is a keeper. I am debating whether to put a tuned pipe on it instead of the stock exhaust. I also have a bigger engine, JBA 56 which is ABC and combined with a tuned pipe, would give quite a boost. However, the existing setup with the OS 46 SF is quite good as well.
