This is my finished wing. You can see the reference I got my idea from. Instead of black on the escapade wing I used Chrome which in my opinion looks really nice.

How about it? Any body over in Tower Hobbies or Great Planes take notice to this color scheme? I hope they don't mind that I used the color scheme from the Escapade MX to cover my Ultra Sport 60. I am so please how the plane looks now.

I just got done fuel proofing the engine compartment and wheel wells so I can begin the final assembly and pilot install and then glue on the canopy. This plane will definitely turn some heads at the flying field. Now to find me a asphalt or hard runway because our club don't have one, maybe I'll put in a call to the guys over at the Eglin club to see if I can fly this pretty bird over there.

That looks awesome, way to go!
I've learned to fiberglass at long last, so I'm going to fully sheet the wings and go at it with fiberglassing.
With my Rossi .60 w/tuned pipe it oughta be a blast.
I'm going to use E-Flite .60-1.20 retracts. I 've had a tricycle set in my Dirty Birdy for several years & they've been wonderful ,not a lick of trouble, and all off grass to boot.
Another plug is the Rossi. Whether a Rossi, Novarossi, etc,. don't hesitate. They are a real treat, amazingly easy to start, tune, with a completely non- critical needle valve ,and yes parts can be had if you need them.

It looks good Robert, it has a very "British" feel to it. Might I suggest some trim seal adhesive on all the edges? Personally I would probably add the silver pin stripe along the edge of all the color changes as well.

Thanks kap. British feel huh? I assure you that is not the theme on this color scheme, I just wanted to use what the escapade mx used with a few changes. I have been covering with top flight monokote for a better part of twenty plus years so it's a labor of love.

I have never heard of trim seal adhesive and I have no idea why you would suggest to use it, the reason I say that is because I use at least 1/8 to to occasional 1/4 inch over lap on the seams especially on the engine side of the plane, once monokote is ironed on over itself is not coming back up. Thanks for the suggestion but since I have no idea what it is I'll have to pass and keep on doing what I know best for me. I'll post pictures after the canopy glue has dried and the plane is ready for flight.

This is what I'm talking about, helps to seal the edges of the monokote down to keep fuel from getting under it.

I have used this solvent to stick covering trim over other coverning. But watch out, it has very strong fumes. Use in well ventilated areas. I used it on covering other than Monokote and it works fine.

That stuff is used to stick monokote over monokote with no use of iron and not allow bubbles that stuff is not needed to glue down edges like you talk about

Hey Doug,
You said that your going to fiber glass your entire plane? Does That mean your going to use a paint of some kind?

Are you worried of any added weight that the fiber glass will cause?
A modeler did just that to a great planes mustang and after he got done the plane is unflyable because it weighs in over ten pounds but it sure did look georgous

Hello everyone,

I'm starting to build a Ultra Sport 60 from Great Planes kit.
The plane will be powered by an OS MAX .61SF ABC with standard muffler.
I will also use mechanical retracts.
I have not yet decided the servos... Futaba 3152 or 3010...?
I'll use one servo for each aileron. I have to think about this modification...
I will be uploading some pics of the building.

Hi Norberto,
You don't need fancy servos with these classic pattern planes, just a good ball-bearing standard servo is enough. Remember these planes were designed back when only standard servos existed. I am anxious to see your build. I have a 40-size Ultra that I bought used. I upgraded the engine but still need to strip and recover it. I plan on re-covering the plane this winter, but I don't have any idea what scheme.

FWIW, the pattern guys often finish models with fiberglass and paint, especially fuselages, and they don't end up with heavy models. It can be done, it just requires some care in not putting on too much resin or heavy coats of paint.

It probably is not necessary, but I have a servo for each elevator half. I built my US60 with a OS 75 AX, but when I build the next (I bought several kits while I can get them), I will go back to a .60 or .65. Flies great with a .75, but it was designed for a .60 and I think it will look better with the smaller one in the nose. Everyone has their favorite accessories but I used a Sullivan tail wheel. If you are using retracts, you may want to go with a tail dragger as putting a nose gear in will not be easy.

A guy at the club recently acquired an US 1000 and replaced the MDS 148 in it with a 20cc gas engine. It now flies like an oversized turd!!!

An MDS 1.48 did my US 1000 in. The engine quit and crashed on landing One of the worst engines ever. I got it because a certain engine reviewer gave it a good review in RCM. Horizon Hobby replaced several times and finally sent a ST carb that worked pretty good....until the last flight.

The first version of that carb was bad and was replaced with a very good carb. The other thing is that it needs to run on low nitro, 0 to 5% only. My point is that if you have a US 1000 and want gas, you have to give up some top speed or put a high pitched prop on it. If you put a high pitched props then flaps are a must.

The .65 & .75 do have identically outside dimensions. No biggie deal, they are both great engines.
Ive put that outstanding Sullivan tail wheel in every tail dragger ive owned since Sullivan started making them.
Some may have other results, but ive never had a set of mechanical retracts that weren't always requiring bending this, adjustIng that, didn't like grass fields at all....There's a reason they don't sell worth a darn anymore. These include MK's (great flying on/off paved runways only] Robert 805 HD's (JUNK frames] and others.
On the other hand, i've been frankly shocked at how good E-Flite electric .60 sized gear are. Ive got 2 sets ive flown off grass for YEARS without touch Ing a thing. A great product.
