RE: Ron Weiss 1/3 Fleet
experimenting.
Still at the Fleet. Laying down the last of the color coats and readying on applying stencils. I have a new heater in the garage that will burn me out. Of course, no doping with that on.

RE: Ron Weiss 1/3 Fleet
I'm working with the lads at rcuniverse. This morning I got 59 unsolicited updates from links I've never been to. Sad to loose all the photos of 2 years work.
All stems from having two names in the pot or something like that. A year ago , some virus or the like got my computer and, after the fix, I couldn't get into rcunivers under E-Gap so I created another.

RE: Ron Weiss 1/3 Fleet
Well, problem never resolved so I killed off Fleet and now I'm registered as "Kinner".
Looking back at 2 years of documention with pictures and seeing all the pix gone, I see no reason to continue this thread.
Rest assured the 1/3 Fleet is still being built with a hope for January completion so as to make the Deland meet in Feb.
Still, lots of yellow and some updates on the Fleet Brotherhood site will be in order.
As of this writing , I'm not feeling I've succeeded as I'm getting the same stuff again. Looks like the only cure is to establish a new Email address and I'll just leave RCU for greener pastures. Too bad.

RE: Ron Weiss 1/3 Fleet
Welp, the big Fleet is on the hush while I get the 1/4 scaler back in the air.
The engine was gone through by BJs Engine Service and I was embarrised by the rusty main bearings. Nice and clean with new rings , et.al. and nicely fit where it had been installed some 15 years ago.
Recommendation by BJenson on twin carb engines is to install a seperate clunk in the tank. A bit of fiddling and cutting and JoiLa... a leaking set of plumbing. I filled it up with some old fuelto check for leakage . Took a bit but it started to trace out so some silicon or sumpin is in order.
I also found an old unused McDaniel twin onbd glow and sent it off to Sonic Tronics the new owner of the same. Told them to make it nearer the newer model that I can use a 6vdc 2000MH battery.
Then, it is sign on to the old club if the'd still have me and fly on.

RE: Ron Weiss 1/3 Fleet
Work still continues on both Fleets but at a reduced occassion. Last Thanks Giving Black Friday took on a new meaning to me.
Took family out for a movie and dinner and came back to a house full of water. Seems a water line under a sink blew loose and all got dumped into the carpets and almost new bamboo floor.
In a nut shell, my house is a mess, contractor and insurance working but my house is a mess and I have to move some stuff around when ever they decide to make repairs.
But... on the fleet news, the 1/3 scale is all painted up completely with a few decals to apply. 1/4 scaler is coming together.
I included a picture of something just to keep the thread alive. Greasing the rocker boxes is a frequent norm on the Kinner as there are no oil feed lines to them. They young lad on the Corsair wing is yours truly about 30 or more years ago.

Well, it has been awhile since I looked over this build. I'm still at it with a picture or two to bring online. I don't know what went down with this thread but my 2 years of pictures are back. Well, I'm stoked. The Cub is done and the maiden out of the way.
Lessons from the Cub, BASU Cubs build a bit heavier than Sig's and Solartex is noticably heavier than dope and Coverall.

My Feedback: (18)
Ray, my Balsa USA Cub weighs in at 21 lbs. after three rebuilds and Solartex. I just completed the re-installation of a Saito 1.80 with new ceramic bearings. Runs very well now that I have the low speed needle set correctly.
Last night I installed the repaired ASP radial in the Fleet. A couple things bothered me about the rebuild at BJ's. I went to put on a piece of tubing for the crankcase drain fitting and found it loose. Odd. I then checked every socket head screw visible and found two loose on the front cover. I'm wondering what else might be improperly torqued on the inside. I don't need that main rod bolt coming undone.

Seems, I may be back in the game. Yesterday's post was the last one for a while. Couldn't get anything to work but RC Universe folks and my IT person shook things around and got it working. I bet it don't work tomorrow.
I tried to edit my upper post but wouldn't have anything to do with it so I replied again.
Stay tuned.

Sorry to read of your loose bolts. My VT's idle screws were not adjusted (two carbs) and took awhile to get the idle down with the proper amount of idle screw vs idle stops. Never got it back to where it was and the plane was a bit hard to slow down even with all the flying wire drag. Could be a major contributing factor in my crash as having a too hot plane on final really rattled me and may have led to dumb thumbs.
I'll bench run the VT before I put back in the Fleet.
Can't figure out how to load pictures yet.

New Fleet
I had to include a pic of then new NE-1. Some research and I found some USN uses for Cubs in Fla. in support of NAGS. Naval Aviation Gunnery School that operated out of NAS Miami. Tail number is of a crashed NE-1 that ground looped landing in Hollywood.

Windshields attached with #80 counter sunk brass screws and nuts. In the fwd cockpit lie the glow ingniter and it's battery, Two recvr batts with battery sharing device. So as can be seen from a starting position, I can see if the onboard glow is lit by it's own red LED.
Gear attached. Now , onto the front and get the engine squared away then assembly and alignment for the wings. That will take some time to work up.

More pixs. I just love all the room. I get lost in there and oddly feel obliged to put more "stuff" in there. Eventually, some pilots will find their way in those big holes.

throttle linkage gave me fits. After much trial and error and lots of re-soldering, I got a slop free slick operating system. Servo in the engine compartment as the large tank would have to be dealt with in the long linkage dept. Not sure of the exhaust yet. Thick copper pipe but it was all I could find. The OS extensions are costly. Keleo has a manifold but would require further piping to get the nasties outside the cowl

Don't rely on one's memory to find stuff under the covering. I had to dig around to find the forward cabane brass receiver tube. I'll have to fill that back in.
Top wing is in two pieces and I just couldn't see making it one piece. It is that big.

Rigging in full swing. Lots of re-trimming of parts and fit that just plain drives me nuts to the point of staying in front of the TV.
We plug ahead. 4 degrees is the magic number on the lower wings dihedral. Took a day to set up jigs and temp fittings. So...all seems more square than I could hope for. The splices for wing attachments are tedious to fit. Instead of using wood screws which will wear the wood away, I opted for some inlayed nut plates and embedded nuts.
Only problem I see is if the adhesive breaking and the nut begins to spin with the wing attached. Uh Oh!
Some JB weld will hold things together but after a few assemblies, all seems well if I can stay away from overly torqueing.
