Here is my Ultimate powered with a Hacker A50-16L and a CC Ice 100 ESC. Still flies awesome and the best part of all, I have never needed to wipe off a single drop of oil from it!!

Very nice skyracer...
I would also like details on your system, I have a Zafiro 3D kit that I'd like to build electric next year.
Prop, amps, RPM's, lipos, flight impressions. Thanks!!

Its poewred with a Hacker A50-16L, CC 100 ICE ESC with the BEC disabled, APC 18*10 PROP and, 8s 4000mAh lipos (2 4s 4000 in series). For the receiver, a CC BEC Pro is plluged into 2 ports on the receiver with a TP 2s 1350 mAh for power just in case I loose the ESC or the battery shorts out. Its performance is like a YS 140 sport. It weighs 8 oz heavier than my old Ultimate with a OS 120 Surpass and a full 16 oz tank. Unlimited vertical, knife edge loops and, 3/4 throttle stick hoovering is achieved with this setup. Its not the best choice for a 3D flyer but, it is the best pattern ship I fly with silly power. I set my timer for 8 minutes but for the last minute, I take the Ulitmate to a high altitude and and fly around at just under half throttle so the power system can cool down. This flight profile usually drains about 72% to 75% from the lipos.

I hope this sparks the intrest for more "Electrified Ultimates". I have just started a Goldberg Super Chipmunk with the famous Art Scholl retracts installed. The power system will be decieded when the total weight can be calculated.

Here is the cost savings by going electric.

If powered with a YS140 sport
YS140 sport= $459.97
Tettra 16 oz fuel tank= $17.19
A good throttle servo of your choice= $30.00
Total= $507.16

If powered with a Hacker A50-16L
Hacker A50-16L= $149.99
Castle Creations Phoenix ICE 100 ESC= $118.95
2 Turnigy 4000mAh 4S 30C @ $39.99= $79.98
Total= $348.92

I bought my items on sale so my cost was just at $300.

Be blessed and Happy Thanksgiving.

Daryl.

I guess you will only have one flight per session, unless you carry spare bateries (more $$$).

Nevertheless, I agree that this is a clean solution to fly a great airplane.

The last time I checked on the price of YS 20/20 fuel, it was $28.99 @ Hobbby People. For the price of 2 1/2 gallons, you can have 1 flight set of batterys. I have had my 2 sets of flight packs for over 2 years and they are still going strong. I get about 8 minutes of flight with each set. IMO, electric is much cheaper and cleaner than gas.

I have been mixing my own fuel for about 6 months now.  I can mix up a gallon of 20/20 with half synthetic and half castor in about 5 minutes before heading to the field at a cost of just under $9.  The nitromethane is the most difficult to fine and expensive ingredient.  I have a lot of older glow engines that run really well on FAI to 5% and that costs me practically nothing.

I get the methanol at a local racing shop for about $2/gallon.  The castor I buy in bulk from a kart racing supply online.  The synthetic I shop around.  I have bought it at motorcross shops and boat dealerships.  But the nitro I have only been able to find at one place that sells only automotive racing fuels.  Maybe I'm lucky living in Houston.

There are a few club members that I have sold my brew to at cost, but I'm very surprised that more are not interested.  There are only three ingredients and it's hard to mess it up.

[8D]Hi buddies, sorry not to see this thread before, but just to share... some pics of my Ultimate that I built during 1.985, I went to competition on that time and took tops scores on spanish Andalusian regionals during there years, after that I flew just for fun ... and still flying like a champ. I added some scale details inside the canopy and keeped the standard color sheeme but changed some of my own on the upper wing and stab...
I love the Carl Goldberg production and did most of their classic airplanes, Eaglet, Freedom 20, Falcons, Eagle 2, Chipmunk, Extra 300, Sukhoi, Gentle Lady, Piper Cub, Tigers and of course this two wing beauty...
All of them during the years I solded, less my Extra300 and the glider...
A joys to fly...
Best regards.
Manolo.

[8D]Tx a lot for your gentle words, mate. Before she was powered by a OS 61, about ten years ago I installed a ASP 91 two stroke with Slimline Pitts muffer.
Cheers.

Do you have the amps and RPMs at full throttle?
Thanks for the info!!

Hello gentlemen,
It has been awhile since I posted regarding the rebuild of my vintage Ultimate (its 20 years old).
I have been enjoying the perfect weather in Athens and have spent hundreds of hours at our flying field.
Another reason was the repair of my YAK 54 (post #943) that I crunched due to stupidity)
Now the weather is a bit murky so I dragged the bipe onto the bench again (hopefully for completion this time)
Last time I posted (#938) the newly built wings had been mated to the old fuselage and new interplane struts had been fabricated with knurled nut anchoring.
The last few days I have done the final sanding to the wings and reinforced the center sections with glass cloth and epoxy resin.
Also fitting of ailerons and hinging, lots of hinging, 32 hinges for the wings alone.
I decided to reinforce the edge of the ailerons as the balsa ends seemed vulnerable by adding a 1/16 aircraft ply end cap.

Revy you have installed a 20cc DLE in your very nice Ultimate.
At present I am torn between leaving the YS 120 four stroke as is or replacing it with a gas engine.
I have a Zenoah 20cc sitting on a shelf that is ready to use or I could order a Mintor22cc engine (of course the DLE is always on the list as well)
Are you happy with your Ultimate /DLE conversion?
What is the vertical performance like (I am not referring to hovering)?
Unfortunately the muffler on my Zenoah 20cc does not fit in the cowl the carb (side mounted) due to the engine offset it is completely enclosed in the cowl. Possible solution is to modify the fuselage to accept an internal canister muffler.
I have done a trial fit on the drawings of a Zenoah 20cc and a canister muffler/header.

I have a Ultimate converted to the DLE 20 (think i was the first one 2 years ago) and replaced a YS 120, came out 9lbs 2 wet with 6 oz tank, in performance, it stays right next to the ys, after brake in and a 17X6 it outflys the ys in any way, not to mention the cost of fuel you would pay for YS/DZ 20 20. Down side is , the dle is a pretty noisy with stock muffler. Just 2 weeks ago i switched to a back pate setup made bu a guy on RC U and i was able to get rid of the H9 aluminum mounts and saved another 4 oz, but did not fly it yet, secondarely i replaced the A123 2300 mah with a LiFe flat pack from H K and another 2 oz by by, i post weigh in later

Thank you for your useful input regarding your experience with a gas engine on the Ultimate.
I am really in two minds about the power plant for mine. Currently there is the Rolls Royce of 4 strokes on the firewall, on the other hand I have a Zenoah G20EI sitting in a box doing nothing.
I weighed the engines to compare, the thumper is 10 grams below 1 kilogram and the gasser is 100 grams above. That makes the little Zenoah 110 grams heavier (including ignition battery)
The YS can happily go through a gallon of fuel in a weekend which is a big deal as glow fuel is expensive in Europe. On the other hand the Zenoah uses 1 liter of gas per hour at WOT.
I have pretty much phased out most all of my glow engines for gas, so the scales are leaning heavily in favor of gas for this little bird as well.

Don't forget:
Weight difference in fuel (smaller gas tank v/s glow)
The weight needed on the tail to balance the heavier engine....

I think this model is outstanding with the Saito 125 or YS 115, very light and powerfull engines.
The Saito drinks moderate amounts of glow if you fine tune the high AND low speed needles. I have one and I know.

This thing is insane with the YS in it. My buddy in Vernon has one and it is an outstanding combination. I prefer the lower operating cost and for that I fly a little heavier plane.

I had a major accident with my cg ultimate, now have to build a new top wing and a new fuse and tail feathers (crushed during a move of house contents)
I thought albert was getting some computer files together for the plan and parts, did this happen?
Quite happy to donate to the brotherhood for the data.

Just a bit of info, for those using dle gassers, the zenoah 20 silencer fits directly on and makes it quiet. the same silencer has been used on the 30 cc engines too, takes a bit from the peak but makes throttle response and mid range much better.
Best of all the zenoah silencers are much cheaper than the dle items.

They're not installed yet, to make sanding and covering easier!!!
Painted and ready to bolt on...

I've built and finish sanded the interplane struts, but I'm off town in business travel.
I'll be back on weekend and glue the stab, fin and rear turtledeck... ...wood-working is almost done!
