Bill started to make some templates to make a few backup planes after working on the restoration. He's been cutting out parts for the fuselage sides and tops along with some formers. He has been busy! He also made a nifty little dremel tool type router table to help make the lite ply sides!

Having selected to re-engine the Ultimate, it became necessary to modify the cowl.
The previous engine (YS) was side mounted and the new DLE will be mounted inverted.
The hole in the side of the cowl needed to be covered and a new hole opened in the bottom for the new installation.
First step was to use a Dremel tool to “clean” around the existing hole removing all paint etc. and thinning the material to avoid a ridge where the old glass will mate with the new glass.
The glass cloth and epoxy resin need a mold to cure against, the large opening where the cowl has a slight curve was covered with a section of a soft plastic bottle and the flatter sections were simply covered with clear packaging tape.
Three layers of diagonal weave glass cloth were laid down and saturated with laminating epoxy resin. When this cured the “mold” was removed to revel the blocked off hole where a bit of TLC filling and sanding is needed.
I will soon be in position to start priming and preparing for final finish.

Mike, great timing as I am doing the same with a CG Ulti I picked up used. Converting it form a Como .90 to a DLE 20.

I may try what you did to save a few bucks but this one has the stock plastic cowl, so I may end up spending the $$ and get a nice 'glass one instead as there is a large portion missing on the bottom from the Como's muffler as well.

A lot of the parts for the older Goldberg stuff is still available through Hobby Services. I've been ordering from them over the last year. Do note that the prices have gone up from what is on the site. The "Blue Hawk" decals are part number 2283.

I traced the Bluehawk text logo myself and had it reprinted by Callie Graphics. Did both the side lettering and the top wing lettering. Istill have the SVGvector file if you want a copy. Excellent and reasonable service from Callie. I also posted somewhere in this thread the front cowling/tail graphics which you could reprint on your own printer using water transfer paper.

If you want a carbon landing gear you could use on of the ones sold by http://www.graphtechrcshop.com/. Fits well too. Ican dig out the details of the one Iordered and mounted on my own bluehawk.

Matt - That's really funny.  My procrastination on my GP RV-4 is what's holding up my Ultimate build too.  I'm actually building two at the same time.  One's by the plan and the other is a scratch with lots of modifications like a turtledeck, surface trim tabs and small winglets.

The great planes .40 size version. I started it thursday and only working 1-2 hours a day have 2 wings the tail and halfway through the body done... so to say it builds fast is an understatement... That being said I don't really love the kit/instructions. Experienced builders would be fine, but there are a number of trip-ups that have left me dissappointed with the kit that could so easily be fixed. For example the top of the fuselage should really be made out of 1 piece aircraft ply... instead its 4 peices that get butt jointed together... I don't have a lot of faith in butt jointed plywood joints.... the other gripe is they updated the parts lists but not the booklet so you spend a lot of time looking for pieces that don't exist b/c they have been swapped out.

I guess the speed of the build makes up for it. and from what I have heard its a wonderful flying plane.

btw, haven't forgotten, I'll get on those templates here and get them sent out to you to add to the .zip file.

i actually was contemplating a turtle deck.. I've always loved the look of the cap-21 and doing that would make this plane look very similar.... i want to just get it done though so its likely coming out with a stock look so I can get flying this spring and get to building the ultimate, which honestly is really what I want to be working on.

Sorry for getting this thread off topic :-)

Getting the CG restoration project closer to completion. Bill finished the fuse. We put it together to test fit the wings, landing gear, mount the CFG 20cc motor, etc. We checked the cg and it looks like with two servos in the rear for the elevator and an 8 oz. tank, it worked out perfect. He also has his fuse built for his. Now he is getting started on the wings. He's moving right along!

Ah yes, gas! Gotta try that one day. I have way too many glow engines and glow fuel isn't getting any cheaper.

I too am preparing my Ultimate with a DLE 20 and a 8oz DuBro tank.
My YAK 54 with an Evolution 26cc GX engine and a 9oz tank gives me a 10min with 1-2min reserve and that engine is 30% larger.
Logically 8 oz should be enough for a small 20cc gas engine.
My Zenoah 20cc engine manual states 1000ml fuel for 1 hour running at WOT. That is around 1/2oz a min. Is it possible that the DLE 20 consumes double that?

Thanks, Bill is doing most the work on this. I just recovered the wings so far. He made a bunch of templates and cut out enough to make him two of these and I got my new kit still in the box. He is going on my word that this is a great flying plane.

Rereading the last few posts about servo location. As I am converting a once nitro powered Ulti into gas with the DLE,I take it I will need to relocate the servos to the rear?

Anyone have a pictures of their install so I can get an idea of what and how it was done?

Thanks,
Bill S.

What we found out from my brother who designed and built planes, it isbetter to move the heavier motor aft a little to make CG than to have to add weight in the rear to compensate for it. What Bill and I did on the gas conversion is move the the firewall back 3/4". We had to rebuild the front of the plane anyway because it was fuel soaked and needed redone anyway. That little bit made it cg perfect with 2 standard servos, one for each elevator and the pull/pull rudder mounted below the cockpit! If everything works out, we should only come in 100 grams heavier than with the glow as that was the weight difference between engines including muffler and ignition. We have to add some light ply to the rear fuse to mount the servos under the horizontal stab. What we add, we will cut away the difference to keep weight down and the same. This is our "Test Monkey" plane. It was flown for 15 years by me and was a true "Feather"! It just got "mushy" in the front from the glow fuel! In 30 years of flying, it is the only plane that I could take off and fly a kife-edge for the entire 10 minutes. Kife edge circles, figure 8's, even knife-edge loops. I don't know what will happen with the 100 gram heavier motor. I had many 50cc ultimates and different others. Nothing flys like the Goldberg. I have been flying for years and The Goldberg Ultimate is a freak! Still have my original ama # from the 70's AMA# 2997.

The Goldberg ulitmate was built "ahead of it's time". It incorporated cut lite ply for weight like the newer models that are extremely light and strong like the "AJ Slick" and others like "Extreme", etc. Wish someone would kit this plane. We reasearched the cost of wood and kitting the plane and it would be to "pricey" to make using USA wood, covering, hardware, etc. Too bad!!! [&o]
