Yes, good point, and I hadn't thought of that. So, if I go with the square blocks, I'll need to recess the wing bolts or thread the hardwood and use nylon bolts, or get the blocks to sit square with the bottom of the wing, and not with the top.

Back to the computer! I'll figure something out.

As far as wing construction, looks like it is going to be similar to how the wing is constructed for the Great Planes Extra 300S .60 size. I'm cutting new wing ribs now.

Thanks for the feed back.

after re-looking through my previous posts of the lower wing damage from the hard landing… nylon bolts might not be a bad idea….You certainly don't lose anything from going with nylon...

I have always, (at least on the two planes I've built), use nylon bolts for the wings and landing gear. My GP Extra 300S came in for a landing and bounced in the grass hard and tore off the landing gear. I was able to just replace them and I was up flying again, no problem. the same plane also caught a post after a bad landing and broke one of the bolts holding the wing on. Again, not much damage, but enough I couldn't fly that day. Probably would have been much more damage if that bold hadn't broke.

The nylon bolts work great in the summer, but up north when it gets cold, they become really brittle and break too easily and you end up with bottom wing damage when they snap! Especially with nice pointy wheel pants!

By the way, took some time off, but almost finishing up my old Goldberg Ultimate renovation. Switched out to a 20cc gas engine and almost ready to re-maiden for flight number 501 as soon as the weather permits! Trying to remember how to post some pics!

Default nylon bolts in wing mounting

hi gang
always use nylon bolts in my model for wing mounting. to make the breaking process easler and avoid damage in process I
alwway cut a slot 1/4 thru the bolts on opposite sides to make the breaking process easier to occur, this way only 1/2 of the bolt
is intact and make breaking easier. your thoughts.

thanks

Check out "Builder For Hire". He update my Ultimate for me and did a fantastic job. He will do as much or as little as you would like and his price was extremely fair.

Found a builder thanks, mnmopar. Looking for more advice, suggestions. I have an OS 1.20 to have installed. The Bluehawk color scheme and number of rolls? Fuel tank size, servos standard bb okay or high torque needed? Certain parts of the kit to be built stronger? Fiberglass cowl and pants? Landing gear upgrades? I have waited twenty years to get this built, just trying to build it properly the first time. I appreciate all the help in advance!

Finally, the weather was nice enough to re-maiden after the restoration. All went well, time to put a cowl on it!

If memory serves me correctly: I think I added some extra ply at the cabane mount and landing gear block area (it's been over 20 years ago...lol)...I think I also replaced the factory supplied gear block with my own piece because I was not going to use the wire gear so I wanted solid wood instead of the grooved piece....I also sheeted my fuse with 1/16 balsa which I don't think is necessary (again, 20 years ago)...

I'm sure the wire gear is fine but I elected to use a set of fiberglass gear which I like very much so I'm glad I made that change...Fiberglass cowl and wheelpants for sure (my opinion)...

I would personally say use some halfway decent servos...I recently put DS-821's in mine and I'm happy with them...I would have liked to put some Hi-Tec metal gear servos in it (probably not necessary) but I had the 821's sitting on the shelves...I flew it for years with some nice (for the time) JR 4131 ultra precision servos but they were the origional servos so I decided to change them last winter...I like this plane a lot and think it's worthy of decent gear...

I have a 20oz tank which is mounted on the CG (YS engines pressurized fuel system allows this)...When I origionally set it up the tank was in the nose, I am trying to remember but I'm thinking it was the same 20oz tank and I just moved it aft but am not positive...

One thing I will do on my next one will be to have the aileron servo linkage exit the bottom of the wing rather than follow the print and exit on the top, I just think it looks better...

I put the elevator servos in the tail to help balance it with the YS 1.20...I did a pull/pull set up on the rudder...

I'm going to change the top to bottom aileron linkage from the 4/40 rod to carbon fiber rod...

This is one of my favorite planes!! She has tons of flights on her over the 20+ year span...There have been some "breaks" during that time where she sat on the sidelines, each time I started back flying her I ask myself why I quit??

Good Luck with your build!!

Well I scored me a kit, been looking long and hard, saw plenty but just was not going to pay $300.00 plus no it goes with my hog bipe kit (almost finished) my Aeromaster kit, Skybolt kit. now hopefully make it to retirement.
Second though, I'm not going to wait until then. so how do you join the brotherhood.

Default Looking for copy of plans from abbott915

15 years ago my buddy had 2 kits and I built one for him and he gave me the other kit. I ran into him the other night and he told me he had crashed it and destroyed the top wing. He had tried finding a wing kit but to no avail. He asked me if I could build him one from scratch so I ran into this thread. If it is possible abbott915 I would like a copy sent to [email protected] . I built one with a YS 120FZ and a smoke system. Here is a video in flight of the smoke system. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TP0Lf-yfPkw I would like to become a member of the brotherhood if possible, how do I get a number? Here are a couple of pictures. I made an indoor foamy and copyed the trim scheme.

That has to be the best looking scheme I have seen on an Ultimate...I will probably use a similar scheme on mine.
Thanks,
Bryan

I like it too.

Due to health reasons (and associated cost which I will not get into considering the increases for next year) _ I may have to have to part with one of my NIB Ultimate kits from CG. I also have a YS 120 on a mount with the right thrust shims in place (about a gallon of fuel through it but the carb is glow fuel gummed up), a slimline "Ultimate" smoke muffler for the YS120 and a True Turn new spinner made for this plane to include the graupner 14x7 - 3 blade prop (this is the combo I have use on my ultimate for the last 19 yrs)

NEway... If someone from here wants it... email me before I put it on Ebay. I gladly paid $245 for the kit + shipping. ---- the YS with Smoke muffler ($85 new) and custom spinner I will probably group together for abt225 and that's cheap

My email is [email protected]. Had surgery last week but trying to check email daily.

Does anyone have the original ABS cowl that they are not using and actually kept. I could use it for a temporary fit while I get things sized up front on the fuse.

I'll be ordering the fiberglass one, but was still hoping to get the original ABS one.

If so, please shoot me an email to [email protected]

Thanks!

Nice find Matt.

Too bad its just books, DVD's and Special issues are 30% off right now with the code "HOLIDAY30".

Would be nice if plans were included....

I have the plans for this airplane. It is smaller than the Goldberg... maybe a truer 10CC class airplane. The only thing I don't like about it is the canopy- which can be changed.

Here is a video of this airplane.

I know.. there are a few plans in there that I'd buy at 30% off… as it is I have a long enough list of planes to build that at full price I am going to hold off on buying any until I have the need for them...

51" vs Goldberg's 54" wingspan. ...

interesting video… I don't think I've ever seen an ultimate fly a whole flight without at least 1 loop or roll… actually wasn't sure it was possible.
