Default My new bipe

I didn't build this but I feel as though I have won the lottery. It is known at my club that I love ultimate biplanes and I recently had a friend of another member contact me about this Ultimate he built a few years ago and wanted to get rid of. I told him site unseen that I would accept his asking price of $200 dollars only knowing it was a 55" wingspan and had an Engine in it. little did I know it was a Goldberg Kit and the engine was a 120 surpass with a pump, Header, and tuned pipe going all the way through. I took it home hit it with a heat gun and started to inspect everything, first thing i noticed was that the builder had an eye for detail. There appears to be custom hatches in the bottom of the fuse to give access to the battery and receiver and tail servos with the wings on. Having flown other Ultimates I find this to be completely awesome, The hatches are held in place by machine screws going into blind nuts hidden in the fuse and everything sits nice and flush. My biggest concern is the servos and linkage in the tail of the plane. It has older standard Futaba servos 55 oz each and the elevator linkage is a piece of square balsa stock with wire rod connecting each end. I plan on replacing the elevator linkage and replacing both servos in the tail, unfortunately he monocoated over the aileron servos and I do not have access to them without any major surgery so they will be staying for now. I plan on using Hitec 645s in the tail, do you think the 55oz in the wings will be adequate? if I do have to cut into the wings it looks like he kept everything else close to the plans do you think it would be best to cut into the top or bottom of the wing? here are a few pictures of her it really is a fine example of how well this kit can look. I am utterly impressed and almost don't want to fly it.

I'd fly it first and not worry about the servos. It's not a 3D airplane with 45 degree throws. Worst case you'll experience some servo blowback, but 'llI bet you won't see it.

I'd agree with JN, the only things I'd check out is the switch harness for black wire corrosion and that u/c. My view is that alloy u/c is the #1 reason u/c mounting plates get torn out, no give in a fore and aft direction. TBH I'd replace the switch.

hi gang, can anyone tell me a good landing gear replacement for the stock wire landing gear and where to get it? I've been trying to locate one that fits but without cutting them and trimming they're either too wide or too narrow.

Why not something like this? I seem to recall mine having a Dural gear, not wire.

I am in the process of installing a DLE 20 in one of my Ultimates. It is my first gasoline engine setup. I hear people talking about looping fuel on top of the tank. I am confused as to how it is looped. I understand why but can't find any photos or good descriptions to how people have run the fuel line. Is it just wrapped in a circle and tucked under the the rubber bands? Pointers are appreciated.

Is your fuel tank up front right behind the firewall? Your gas engine will have a walbro carb which has a pump. I mounted my tank just above the wing using the stock tank mounting piece of wood. My thinking was that my cg should stay pretty consistent through out the flight and gives me plenty of room for the fuel lines.

It's the vent line you want to "loop" over the top of the tank. Look at this picture to get an idea of how its' done

Ok... I'll ask... why do you want to loop it?

I've never done that with any of my gassers....

It's to prevent fuel from returning out the vent line when you turn your model upside down.

A better picture - again from a thread on RCG

*light build goes on...*

makes perfect sense... I've never had a big enough problem to need to do this, but I get it ... cool, my next plane I'll probably do this on...

That is a great diagram. Thank you. Now I just need to figure out how to run the throttle push rod now that the tank is mounted. Wish I thought of that first.

Just picked up an original CG T.O.C. Circus Circus ARF Ultimate. Flew it at the field and had to have it. Luckily the owner is a good friend that agreed to let me take it home.

Anybody familiar with this scheme or the history of the plane? The previous owner filled me in on most of it. Just wondering if anyone else has one or if anyone has even heard of it. I'll get some photos of it soon.

Thumbs up

It finally flew!!!

Maidened on saturday and I went to first IMAC round on sunday 600km from home!

Flew a little nose heavy, I moved the battery and RX to the back of the bay, but it's still a little nose heavy for my taste.
I used the middle of the range on the printed plans, I guess it's quite a bit conservative.
Too much "up trim" on level, requires down elevator on inverted flight. Lands a little fast, nose won't go up for. But it comes down VERY stable on that glide.
I guess I'll remove the smoke system bolted to the firwall. And maybe add a small piece of lead on the rear gear.

I used the "mild" control settings suggested on the manual. It's enough for my style, it "snaps" and "spins" even with the forward CG. (but you have to really try to do so)
The manual says you could fly the "old" F3A routine on that setting, I can't wait for next weekend with the CG spot-on.

This thing flies soooooo good. Long live Ultimate!!!!

Love Love the covering. Very attractive. What are you powering yours with. I am installing a gas engine on mine and having to move all I can up front to get it at the rear most cg point.

Agreed! I think I see a 4c valve cover peeking out on one of the pics. What you got in there?

I would definitely say go ahead with the build! I am sure that when you are done you will love the plane and there are enough fans of the plane here that can provide you with templates or drawings of missing wood parts.

Good eye. It's a Saito125 with APC 16x6. Very light and powerfull combo. It does give "unlimited" vertical, but not "ballistical" .
Mounted at 45° down, the lines of the cowl are much nicer than a side mounted engine with a lot of fiberglass hacking.
I posted a lot of images with the build process "a few" pages ago. I didn't reinforce almost anything!

A gas engine will surely require servos in the tail and rx battery "somewhere" behind. That translates into more weight...
My plane "feels" light in flight... ...."your mileage may vary".

The covering scheme was inspired by the Eflite Ultimate (top and fuse sides), and a german 50cc EMHW Ultimate (fuse sides and bottom).
Bottom is red with white curved sunbursts.

(ps: I would really love to build that german 50cc kit... ...looks really nice in the videos!!! )

I would sure appreciate it if someone could supply me with the Templates for the parts for this Ultimate, I would be willing to pay for them.
