Carl Goldberg Ultimate 10-300 Brotherhood.

Last Sunday I've decided to maiden flight my CG Ultimate (as said before - I've got it from a colleague, who didn't fly it for couple of years).
Everything was checked. The empty weight with Saito 120 is 4kg (8.8 lbs?).
Unfortunatelly, it's 1:0 for Ultimate.
When engine started, the original spinner came off and hit me in the mouth. Result - few bad cuts through the lips and a lot of blood.
I've checked the spinner before and it was pretty snug fit, so don't know what really happened (perhaps the mounting pins were weak and just broke when engine started)
Well.. the lips are better now (but I need a new spinner).
Untill I get one - coming weekend I'm gonna try it without the spinner and change the score to 1:1

Thanks for responding about the landing gear. Pulled a copy of the custom landing gear order form ( http://www.tntlandinggear.com/img053tnt.pdf ) from TNT Landing Gear ( www.tntlandinggear.com ) and I've been able to get all the measurements except (W), which is the distance inside / between the gears at the axels. If I can impose, would you take that measurement and with the copy of the wires I should be good to go, either way (bend new wires or order an aluminum gear from TNT). I live close by, in Malvern, PA

Marek, sorry for the accident and hope you recover well from the injuries.
By the way, the first time I started my C.G. Ultimate´s original OS 120FS the Du-Bro spinner bursted into pieces although I was lucky enough not geting touched by any. from then on I used an alluminun one securing the propeller nut with a drop of blue screew retainer.
Best Regards and wish you total success on your next try.

Thanks Jesus
I might go for the alu one too.
Yeah, I'm good not. Still can't speak too much as the lips are bit senseless, but it's ok.
Initially I only felt the hit and thought that this was all, then after some time I've realised, that "something warm" is filling my mouth pretty quickly.
As said - I'm going to change the score to 1:1 as soon as the weather allows (Autumn in The Netherlands means even more rain than usually).

Hi Jim
Yeah, I'ts ok now (there's small scarf left, which is bit thiker and harder than the rest of lip).
In mean time the weather broke down (it's typical, Dutch weather - rain, then rain and then a little bit of rain) and some family events, so I haven't maidened it yet
Hope to do it in next few weeks if the weather allows. In mean time, I'm preparing to maiden one more model: 2m Decathlon, which will be my day to day flier.

Finally got around to the maiden on my scratch built Goldberg Ultimate today. Pretty slack on my part since I completed the build back in January. I will need to dial in a mix for knife edge and the elevators seem to be kind of sensitive, but overall it looks like it should be a great plane. I cannot take credit for the covering scheme, as I use one from another build that was posted.

Congrats on the maiden and on the covering, although scheme was not originally from you.
In fact i like so much that I am even considering it when my RTF version need recovering, something that is not so far away!.
Best Regards.

Hi "mustangherb"
I do not use any mix with my Ultimate as although it is necesary to compensate with some elevator and aileron during knife edges, I will need to remember to activate the mix and then it is never perfect as all depend on airspeed and other factors, so I rather prefer compensating manually.
Also other maneover which I have found requires a lot of compensation is the inverted flying, when I need applying quite a lot of down elevator, at least flying slowly and medium speed.
While I originally used the manual suggested control throws, I have programmed 2 Flight Conditions: SPORT (recomended controls with a bit of expo on elevator) and ACRO (increased throws and expo on all controls) so I may fly classic aerobatics and then some more extreme ones, althoughnever really 3D flying.
On ACRO Condition a preferred maneouver is to climb vertically a few second and with some speed aplying full down and full left aileron and rudder at the same time, so the Ultimate makes two or three spectacular turns; then it stops as soon as you center the sticks so you may resume flying right, inverted or even at knife edge.
I use a FUTABA transmitter and I may check the rates and expo values if they are interesting for you.
Just another detail: If your transmitter do not have Flying Conditions you may get the same result by selecting the same switch for every control rate (Dual Rate) and Expo adjustments.
Best Regards.

Flight after mixing
Well got to the field on Sunday to try out the Ultimate after adding mix. First flight did not yield the desired results. Change the elevators mechanically due to the plane climbing during acceleration (To keep the trim near 0). Second flight was much better, but still needed some work for that effortless knife edges. The District IV sportsman IMAC winner (Joshua McCreary) flys at our field, so I had him perform the fine tuning and fly the plane so that I could make a small video with my phone. Videos can be seen here:

"mustangherb" that is flying -and showing- a C.G. Ultimate my friend!. Congratulations on the model and wish you several fun flights with it.
By the way I have noticed in your Youtube chanel you have an early OS 1.20FS engine. I also have one and in fact I started flying my Ultimate with it till I switched to the OS 1.20 AX (2 stroke) early this year.
Best Regards

Hi there!
This year I tried my hand with the Ultimate at IMAC Basic...
...1° place overall, and flew against 50-80cc monoplanes!!!
Only biplane at the field, only glow engine, only "not ARF" plane!!!!
This is truly a timeless desing.
My setup:
Saito 125 + APC 15x8
(I had the 16x6 first - better punch, but not as smooth and too slow)
Control throws are at the minimum suggested in the manual. Just enough for spins and snaps.
73% aileron differential, made a big difference in rolling!!!
Rudder -> Aileron: -19.5% left ; -12% right
Rudder -> Elevator: -17% left ; +5.5% right
CG was shifted to the rear - just enough for some down elevator when inverted and not a lot of pull-out on down lines.
I tried a bit more rear CG, but the tail was droping some when landing, I don't like that.
Saludos,
Jean Paul

CG was shifted to the rear - just enough for some down elevator when inverted and not a little of pull-out on down lines.
I tried a bit more rear CG, but the tail was droping some when landing, I don't like that.

Rudder -> Aileron: -19.5% left ; -12% right
Rudder -> Elevator: -17% left ; +5.5% right

Now this is exactly what I was looking for and is real close to the mix I have so far. My CG could stand to be moved back just a bit, but everything is close. Going out tomorrow to fly it some and get use to the flight characteristics a little better before doing anymore adjustments. Your input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill

Landing Gear mod
Now that I have some flights under my belt on my Ultimate a problem has been noted with the landing gear bending a little after a few landing even though they are good landing. So I started doing some research on the different forums and the internet. The one that I settled on was from B&B Specialties (BB Landing Gear Reinforcement Standoffs - 3/16''). I had to go to my LHS to purchase the 3/16" music wire. The wire was bent down to a 40 degree angle on each end. The two ends are 5-1/4" in length and the center portion is 6" as measured from the center of the bends. I will provide feedback on how this setup performs after it has some landings, also if there are any effects on flight characteristics.

"mustangherb", what landing gear are you using?. My Ultimate is the RTF version and has aluminum landing gear but it has tappered legs instead of straight ones like yours. Anyway also have showed as a bit soft and bends easily when landing as you point out.
Other question, how do you keep the wheel spats from rotating arround wheel shaft?. Mine has 2 screws through landing gear for avoiding rotation.
Finally I would like to advice that my Ultimate has broken twice the front left top wing support, I guess due to vibrations since both failures happened while using large 2 stroke glow engines (JBA 1.40 and OS 1.20). Has anybody suffered this same problem?.
Best Regards,

I have three Goldberg Ultimates and one Seagull Ultimate, the Goldberg is the best. I will take #22 if it is available.
Twistman How about #122?
