"mustangherb", I have just discovered you do not have a number on the Brotherhood.

Of course it is not important but with your experience and beautiful Ultimate, won´t you like to get number #114 and so we finish free slots in the list?.

Best Regards from Spain.

Hello everyone,

My GP to EP conversion was officially completed today with a maiden flight. You can see my build thread here if you are interested: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/kit-...300-build.html

Everything went well after it got off the ground after a pretty shaky lift off due to not giving it full power but it still lifted off at half power and once I realized it, full power pulled it up and off. Some very little trim adjustments and all was good. Landing was a breeze.

Completed plane was just over 9 lbs with a 5,000 mAh Lipo.

Hello all!

Jesus, please put me down for the next available number - I wish to join the Brotherhood!

I'm very happy to see this forum active. I have been lurking for a while, having decided a while ago that the Goldberg Ultimate Bipe is the perfect place to put my YS 1.20 4 stroker. Actually, this is the fulfillment of about a 20-year old dream, and I haven't found a better option among the available planes. These days so many seem to be emphasizing electrics (which I do a bit of, too) and 3-D (which I've had my fill of). I just want to do good old normal (precision) aerobatics without spending thousands on a "pattern" plane. I loved my Tiger 60, though I did find its limits, and a servo failure finally took it from me.

Well, sure enough, my lovely and loving wife shocked me at Christmas by winning an eBay auction, so I'm the proud owner of one of these fine kits. I am deciding on which mods to incorporate (probably not much other than the top wing mount - I don't like the pin idea, with apologies to Dave Patrick!), then I have a few other projects to finish up, and I'll get started. Can't wait!!

I have just started a rebuild of my fourth Goldberg Ultimate. This one was crashed and the guy was going to trash it,so I got it. It will take a while but I will have before and after pics. I already have three ready to fly.

Hi Srecker
Very nice gift!!!!

I flew my Ultimate in IMAC Basic this year, and I will fly Sportsman 2016 with it.
Build it light and straight. With the 120 you'll have to get light.

Advice:
- Don't reinforce anything. Plane is strong enough, I have 110+ flights with my Saito 125. I only did put small thin ply discs where the aluminium struts bolt into the fuse.
- The steel pin Works very well, it is a lightweight solution.
- Use two elevator servos. You'll need both elevator servos in the tail with that engine.
- Two aileron servos
- Strong rudder servo with dubro HD pull-pull (I use a S9202)
- Don't enlarge nothing (elevators, rudder, etcetc). Plenty of throw even with the recommended low rates.
- Aluminium gear and fiberglass cowl and pants are a must. Aluminium gear is easier to intall, I use 3 nylon bolts.
- Mount the engine at 45° down. Less cowl cutting, and exhaust points down for cleaner flight.
- Do check the incidence and alignment on both wings, mine were both off and needed some sanding and fitting on struts and cabanes.

I have pictures of my build "a few" pages back with this advice.
This is an exceptional design, very precise and easy to fly. (Build it light and straight).

ENJOY THE BUILD!!!

Thanks for the advice! As I scan through this thread and see all the guys reworking everything from balancing the rudder to making built-up ailerons 30% larger, I can't help but think "Gee, I wish Dave Patrick knew how to make Aile's bigger. . . ." NOT!

Honestly, I don't want to be dissing anybody - kit-bashing is an ancient and respected art. But I want to build this one the way it was intended. By all reports it's one of the best-designed RC planes ever made, and that's the experience I'm after. If guys want to fly 3-D, there's hundreds of planes out there, from cheap foamies to half-scale monsters. For me, this one is going to be as-is!

I thought it was interesting that the original kit had a pull-pull rudder but a wood-block for elevators. What about a double-pull-pull system for the elevators?

The 45 down for the engine sounds great - avoid the "wart." in the cowl. I think I even know how to do right thrust with that setup, but what do you think about the 3-4 degrees the plan suggests for that engine? Is that about right?

I'm glad to see you recommend 2 aile servos, even though you emphasize "light." That was a definite for me - I like to mess with flap programming and such. I haven't looked carefully at the linkage. Is it set it up with the same throws for upper and lower ailerons, or is there a top/bottom differential?

And what about a source for the "extra" parts? Is the original gear mount area strong enough? I see guys building up that area.

Thanks!

With the YS120 you'll need the servos in the tail. Double pull pull is lighter, but you'll end up with lead in the tail.

I went with 2.75° right on the Saito 125. Spot-on.
The YS120 should be a Little more tan 3°, but 4° seems much. 3.25-3.5 should do the trick????

Some pics of the build:
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...1&l=f5293bdc8d

I set up the throws for same up/down movemente in ailerons. Ended using 73% differential in the radio after trimming.

Fiberglass is http://www.fiberglassspecialtiesinc.com the regular "pointed" one. 45°degrees down engine fits very well.
Gear I think was from http://www.tntlandinggear.com/
Spinner of course Tru-Turn "Ultimate" model!!!!

Fot the gear I used just a flat 1/4 ply plate epoxied in place of the kit mount. No reinforcements!
3 holes with 1/4 nylon bolts. Had to trim the aluminium mount a Little to get the wing to fit. No problems until now!
But, the Saito has had flawless operation, 0.0 dead sticks and no out-landings so far. I don't think it will hold up a very rough landing.
Build to fly, not to crash - It is an aerobatic machine, not a ground attack aircraft!!!!
Anyway if it "rips out" it works like a fuse, damage on the lower wing with the wheel pants is a chance.
Alumium plate is very rigid, I think I would go with a thinner gauge...

Great advice, J Paul. I guess everybody agrees that the YS is pretty heavy, but there's no chance I'll budget for a replacement. It runs great, and I'm trying to use existing equipment. That also means probably using full size (digital, coreless) servos - two of those in the tail, for the elevator halves, instead of lead?! My thought about using pull-pull for the elevators is not so much for weight as for getting rid of slop. The wood stick in the plans seems OK, but then there's bent-up pieces of music wire going to each elevator half. Seems like that would introduce a fair amount of slop, no? With two servos in the tail, perhaps I wouldn't need to engineer a pull-pull system - I can probably fit a short, straight piece of music wire on each side. I don't know - I guess I have some measuring to do!

Oh, well, I am a very meticulous builder (that is to say, SLOW), so it will probably be NEXT Christmas before I have to think seriously about linkages!

BTW, I really like your color scheme. One of the nicest looking Ultimates I've seen!

I don't know what I am doing different, but I have been flying my Goldberg for years with the YS and I have no lead in the tail and my servos are in the center of the plane?? And might add, it will go ballistic and never stop climbing.

twistman, that reminds me of my favorite line from some airplane review years ago:

"Vertical performance is limited - limited by the amount of fuel on board! "

srecker, that is a good one but very true. If you do run out it will build enough speed coming down to land!

hi guys so, the Ultimate spent a night in the trees over night New Years eve.... Got it out but it needs repairs. If anyone has an extra canopy and the stock cowl that they are willing to part with please message me. I would greatly appreciate it. I noticed that the fibergalss specialties cowl does not have the landing gear fairings. I have one unused that I can trade for the stock one and canopy. please let me know

Maybe heavier wood or heavy building???
I used a very light Saito 125:
At first I put both elevator servos in the tail, but ended tail heavy.
I changed the servos to the center with pushrods and ended nose heavy.
Had to put some lead in the back... ...about the same weigth as 1 servo.

In my plane an old YS would need both servos in the tail for sure.

I'm flying at the back end of the CG range. Mind that I built it very weight-conscious, no reinforcements and clean glue joints: "your mileage may vary"

Saludos,
Jean Paul

So I have a fiberglass cowl for the ultimate that has the landing gear fairings. It is used, but I can let it go for $10 , plus shipping. The cowl was used with a OS 120AX.

Jesus,
A friend has a GB Ultimate ARF, the 60.5" span version, for sale. It has a Saito 1.50, servos and 2.4 JR Rx. Been flown very little (looks new).

Trying to decide if it is a smart buy, the price is very good but don't know how the model flies compared to the kit built Ultimate.

Thanks for any input.

Jim

Sorry Jim, mine is 54" while your friend one is the larger 60,5" so iI do not have experience on your intended model.

I hope other RC Universe mate would be able to help with this.

Sorry again.
