I think a Saito .91 would be on the "mellow" side of performance, a little lighter airframe with no lead in the tail.
But I doubt that you will get good vertical performance.

The Saito 125 I have performs very well, with only app. 1.5 of lead in the tail.
And excellent vertical performance!!!!

I agree about a 91 likely being on the weak side. I have an OS 120FS in mine and it is great but not overpowered being an older OS. I think your Saito 125 must be terrific for vertical. The YS 120 would be a great match too. I have a YS110 unused, but not gonna fool with perfection already obtained. Gonna fly mine tomorrow, hope I solved the fueling problem I had in my last post here.

The YS120 should rocket-proppel it.
But a little on the heavy side.

I suppose the YS110 would be very close in performance to the Saito125. Low weight and plenty of power... ...I reccomend trying it!!!

I just checked, its a YS110 not 120. oops. I found it is covered with Ultracote, so found a roll of matching color so I can patch it along with some plywood and balsa for the wing braces. So patch it, make those struts, install my RX, and if needed, replace the battery. I have it on my battery charger doing a 5 cycle D/C on it to see what the life is in it.

One of the wheel pants is busted off, but I found that the T-Clips 70 ARF wheel pants are a very close match, so going to see if I can get a pair of them. They are fiberglass, painted red which is pretty close to the same red the plane is now, and have the same wheel opening.

Hey, use that 110 then, a really great match even better than the YS120. I will leave mine as is since it flies great already. Started working on making new struts, and found I need bigger sheets of plywood. A 12"x6" sheet is too small. Other than some patch work, and installing the RX, once I have the struts done, I can go out a fly it. A it is, if I wanted to I can run up the engine, there are two aluminum struts securing the wings together.

One question I have, the wire that secures the upper wing, is it supposed to run all the way back to the rear post? This one is only securing to the front post.

Yes it has to be long enough to go through the holes in both posts.

Jesus: I bought my Ultimate in the summer of 1981. Just getting around to building it!
I wish I had known about this build thread before starting.
I have the empanage built and hinged. Fuselage crutch is built and engine has been mounted. using an OS FSII with a Slimline Pitts muffler. Looking for an alum or carbon landing gear.
I've been out of the hobby for more than 20 years and boy how things have changed!
Love to build but find it hard to do here; the local hobby shop doesn't support the build side of the hobby (does anybody in the low country build?)
I'm currently building a new bench before I start on my wings. I found a slab of marble ( 3/4" x 21 1/2" x 60") for $30! Finally, a truly flat surface to build on!
Does PeterJ still have templates mfor the Ultimate?

If you go with the aluminum landing geR then do yourself a great favor and purchase a set of landing gear reinforcement stand offs from B & B Specialties, as these will tend to flatten out without it. If you have even a semi hard landing then the wheels pants will contact the bottom of the wing.

Those are the reinforcement standoff a that B & B Specialties sell. They work great also.

I am planning on building my 3rd ultimate and using a YS 120NC as well, I would like to use a soft mount on it. is yours soft mounted? It looks like I will need to move the firewall back about an inch to use a Hyde or a Gator mount, Just wanting to get feed back on this idea,

There in lies the problem with using these mounts. Other than a pattern plane I have never been able to justify using them.

I have a Saito 125 on mine, hard mounted of course...
No problems after 100+ flights.
You'll add a lot of weight... ...and you'll have to put more weight in the tail.

I agree. The soft mounts were popular 20 plus years ago and quickly dissapeared from the scene when most people, including me felt that it actually "amplified" vibration instead of helping "inhibiting" it! Hard mounting works best as far as I am concerened. I have a tape where Dave patrick really indorsed them when he joined up with Tower Hobbies, but it quickly faded! Haven't seen them in years!

What is the attaching rib made out of? It looks like lite ply glued to a 1/4 thick balsa rib. Is that right?

Well after sinking 24 hours into it, I finally got it flight ready. I have 30 minutes of run time on the engine, just needs some fine tuning on the HSN, but the engines good. Made new wing struts, and aileron links. Patched the covering where needed, and shrunk what I could. Lowered the fuel tank as I found fuel leaks from the carb when not running and spit fuel when it ran. Replaced the rubber mounts for the Gemini with aluminum standoffs. Tightened up the wire tail braces, and rudder pull-pull, and tightened up the bolts that I could find for the Cabane. It appears this is a very old plane as the glue joints are brittle, so after I get this flight in to see how well it flies, and if it is a plane I can enjoy then it will be stripped of covering, all glue joints gone over and re-glued, and re-covered. Need to find wheel pants, the right one is busted up too bad to repair properly, looks like the pants from the SIG T-Clips ARF are nearly identical except for the bolt holes. I balanced it and it was tail heavy, the OB put the battery in the tail, I moved it to sit above the forward wing bolt block, so now it sits right at the forward part of CG.

The one thing that I haven't been able to figure out is how much rudder throw it should have. This one doesn't move very much, but its so big that shouldnt be an issue for its maiden flight. The only way I can see getting more throw is to put longer control horns on the rudder.
