Flew mine today i had a 46fx in it but put the newer 46ax on it with a three blade prop on it. its a blast to fly, it reminds me of my full scale pitts i fly. it even snaps like it does, i dont know how most people snap a model but on the full scale pitts i do a quick pull for the buffet and left/right rudder and then as rotation starts push the stick back forward till i get pressure and wow she goes around! and i tried this same method on my model ultimate and just like the real one it just goes round and round, just a quick flick on the elevator with left rudder at the same time and realease the elevator and hold the rudder in and she will rotate around so fast you won't beleive your eyes!

have fun and yeah if you started today you build faster than me!!

HEY GUYS IS THERE ANYWAY I CAN GET A COPY OF THE WING PLANS FOR THIS THING? I HAVE A POST ON HERE ABOUT THE SIMPLE ULTIMATE. IT HAD FOAM WINGS AND RECENTLY GOT MY PLANE FROM MY DAD WITHOUT THE FOAM WINGS AND I WANT TO DOWN SCALE THE PLANS TO FIT THE .15-.20 SIZE ULTIMATE. I BUILT WINGS FOR IT WHEN I WAS A KID BUT ONE I WARPED AND THE ATTACHMENTS ARNT RIGHT. SO I WANT TO REBUILD BOTH WINGS, I ALREADY HAVE TEMPLATES JUST NEED SPACING AND SOME PLANS TO PIN THE WOOD IN PLACE TO MAKE A STRAIGHT WING! SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS, AS IM TYPEING FROM AN IPHONE AND ITS DEFAULTED TO CAPS FOR SOME STUPID REASON.

You will absolutely love this plane. I finished one several months ago. Had about 75 fltes on it till I pancaked it on the runway. Fly landed on my face as I was landing, distracted me long enough to mess up. easily fixable. I have a saito .65 in it, a little under powered. Going to change it to a saito .82. Yours is looking great. Kep up the good work.

Wow! Thats a sharp looking scheme you got on that one Good to hear that your plane is repairable.
I went for a 46 2 stroke on this one, but if my wallet would let me, I would have bought a 70 4 stroker. And a little question here: What kind of servos would be good in the ultimate? I bought hitec standard servos, and hope they have enough torque. The rudder is quite big for a standard servo tho.. hehe.

You should be fine with those servos. At the rate your going maidening it should not be far off. Have you figured out a color scheme yet?

Here is a pic of mine and it has a .46ax in it and it flies great I think, its a blast, Im thinking of ordering another kit for a spare. I also have 4 standard servo's in mine and they work fine, I am thinking of going to two servo's in the wing though and using two great planes mini servo's which the two mini's offer the same weight as on standard and more than half of the torque of a standard, so therefore the sum of their torque working all four ailerons is more than one standard working all four ailerons. I have done this on my latest gp extra 300s .40 and it works GREAT even after I oversized the ailerons you may want to look at that if you would like to go with dua ailerons in the wing. just a thought to help keep the weight down. I have two gp extra's one with 4 standard servo's and the modded airplane with 2 standard for elevator and rudder, one micro for throttle, and two mini for aileron. I really like this setup it lightens the plane up a little bit, since I weighed both planes and the modded extra is lighter you can see my build thread on here of the extra to show what i did to it if you are interested.

Well looking good and I'll be watching your thread and good luck on the maiden, i know you won't be disapointed!

Some hot planes you got there! Thanx for the advice I think I will build in dual aileron servos, before I cover it up.
Got some more done today, and here is a few pics. This airplane is a joy to build, and almost every part fits without modification!

Dragonov3: I have covered the underside of the bottom wing now. I went with blue ultracote and some white trim. The fuselage will get a blue and white cowling, fuselage blue, white and green.
Think its gonna look good But my covering skills is questionable.. hehe

Looks good to me. I went with dual standard servos. I dont like a single servo for both ailerons. Your plane is looking good, its worth the effort.

Default RE: Great Planes Ultimate 40

alright so i decided to scrap the wings i posted 2 postsbelow due to my inexperience with aerodynamics as a kid. I measured the one side of the wing was bigger than the other and that it is also warped! So now i am drawing up my own plans for both wings by scratch. I took the simple ultimate plans (next post below) that came with the plane and upscaled the little picture of the wings. Once i upscaled it i measured off the actual plans (side shot of the wings and fuselage in the picture below actual plans). There is a 2 in distance between the leading edge of the center of the wing to the leading edge of the wing tip.....the wing span is 33 inches, so that means from 16.5 inches to the wing tip is a 2 inch gap meaning the wings are swept at 8 degrees. So i drew up some plans for the top wing as that is the easiest to do first. I took some templates for the wings from the ultimate 40 and went into "paint" on windows and resized them to fit my wing scale (91% of the ultimate 40) So here is the left wing and how far im getting with it.

The only problem im having is with the bottom wing. Once again the wing center and wing tip is 2 inches and the span for the bottom wing is 16.5 (same as top). Now the joining area of the wing should be flat on the leading edge to place dowel pins to go into the forward fuselage. So the fuselage is 3 inches wide that will sit on both halfs of the wing meaning 3 inch / 2 is 1.5 so the sweep is from 1.5 inches out of the wing then to the wing tip? If anyone has plans for the ultimate 40 i was wondering if they can throw a protractor on it and see what the sweep is on the lower wing? I can figure it out but i just want to double check to make sure the wing struts connecting upper and lower wing match up perfect.

here is the kit i got but i started it in 96-97 and joined the air force and just got it back from my dads house as i been over seas for the past 12 yrs and now i want to get back into rc's. First i want to finish this to get my itch started then build a 1/4 scale pitts that i already have plans for. Notice the wing struts dont match up to the wing that i built 12 yrs ago. I am now building the ultimate 40 wings for this just down scaled to this size that is why i post the drawings above and showing what im doing. Im am more than willing to trace out the plans and upload them on here for you guys to build also if you want to fly at super small .15-.20 size ultimate. Also i want to do what you guys are talking about with the dual servo's for each wing as oppose to just 1 servo for all 4 wings. (i want redundancy!) also all incidence for the wings are set to 0 and the tail 0 according to the simple ultimate plans.

Got the fuselage covered now Still have to finish the top wing and install the servos, rx, fueltank and the engine. If everything goes smoothly and the weather is good, the maiden should be realistic within a week or so Cant wait!

Mike. Why did you change the wing struts? Just curious. If you want to mount dual servos like I did, instead of using a balsa sheer web on the spar I used lite ply and epoxied a servo mount to that. Easy peezee. Not really interested in a smaller one, I build mostly .40 to 1.20 size planes, but i'm sure othes will be interested.

Murdoc: You must be a power builder, no way I could have built mine that fast lol[X(]. Keep us posted. Maybe a video of it finished and the maiden???

I'm finally done with the drawings and i think i got this wing looking pretty similar to what the ultimate 40's wing looks like so here's hoping my math and drawings work out on the building block! Here's a few pics of them all tracedout and labeled with the templates. As for the servo in the strut, I think im going to place the servo in the wing but i want it to look decent somehow.....i may try to build a small bubble in the wing for the servo (micro servo) and then place a slit in the skin for the rod to come back to the aileron? We'll see? But here's where im up to.
