I don't know if anyone is really following this build. But I worked on the tail the last couple nights. Its cool the SIG has lazier cut some of the parts. But it is actually coming together pretty good.
I've been following your build as well. I like to see how others build their kits to see if I can learn something different. I've been building for well over 20 years but you never know what you can pick up. The cub is coming along nicely, keep us posted. |
This is going out to all that might be building a 168 rascal. I feel that it is a must to put struts on your airplane. I'm not saying anything bad about the plane it fly's awesome and its a fun build. Even after the first mishap I myself was a little skeptical about how he powered the aircraft and about the speed of the aircraft. after last night I experienced a similar situation and my aircraft was powered by a Dj 85 and only weighed in at 44 pounds, I also had put 8 flights on and had a great time prior to last night, I was flying at half throttle and making a gentle turn when the wing failed.
It is still a good airplane but it does need struts and should be taken into consideration before you fly. I would like to say again, that i am not saying anything bad about the plane or Sig. things happen and its part of the hobby i am just glad that there are forms out there that everyone can put in their two cents worth and help other fellow Aircraft enthusiasts out and to point out any potential problems that might arise in any aircraft. Just wish i would have listened to what people were saying. if there are any doubts about my feelings towards the 168 rascal I'm seriously considering buy another one. Hay I know were the weak point is now so I know what to do to fix it and will have an awesome flying plane again for a long time. |
Where did your wing fail?
|
as far as i can tell the spar failed it broke in the same spot as the other rascal.
|
I'm sorry to hear your Rascal didn't fare so well. I hope you're rebuilding.
|
Hopefully, Sig is taking notes on this and some of the other issues.
|
Hi guys, I'd like to become a member of the SIG group as well PLEASE. I have a 1/6 scale SIG cub that I'm doing an L4 conversion on with LOTS of added detail and I have two other SIG kits that will be on the building board in the not too distant future, one is the Ryan STA and the other the Citabria, bot will be well detailed;)
|
Well that's not good. I did notice while you had it up that the wing does appear to have a lot of flex to it. It is big enough to see move, unlike the smaller planes, and it was moving. I just hope that I got the reinforcements correct on mine to stiffen that spar. There were quite a few areas where the ribs joined the spar that didn't have enough meat in the game to make a solid joint, so added triangle stock in those areas. Fingers crossed that the added stock and struts are enough to keep the wing together.
|
I have a 11 foot kadet senaor it has no means of joining the two wing halfs together it purely realize on four nylon bolts and struts. Just in my opinion, just the addition of struts will make the wing strong enough.

Thanks for letting me in Sky, look forward to seeing all the SIG builds and learning a few tricks from the builds. Will keep you updated here and the Cub brotherhood with the L4 conversion build.

Welcome Brendon

There goes your reputation Brendon! Guilty by association!

Thanks Pork Chop
Fly, my reputation flew out the window LOOOOONG ago...flew quite well too actually...so well it went OOS :p;) |
Good day for flying here in the Shenandoah - after playing with the horses for a couple hours, my Midstar-40, Kadet Mk-II, Stratus & CG Eagle-II all made it into the air AND BACK ON THE GROUND without incident. THEN, the heat hit ... and I'm home drowning in iced tea.:o |
Was a little humid, but temps were good. Wind was supposed to be 5-10, but turned out to be 10-15 instead, so only got a little flying in. I had the kids out and had each one on the buddy box until the wind got too strong for stable enough flying for training. Flew some aerobatics with the LT-40 before packing it up. The field was also very wet from all the rain we got. Wound up spending another $216 at the hobby shop too. Got the rest of the things needed for the 4*20 I won at SIG(my wife glommed onto it, it's hers now. Also got a pair of LiFe batteries for the Rascal, so just have to dig through my stuff and find a second switch mount and get the RX swapped out for the JR and hook up the second pack to it. Also got some props for the Somethin Xtra, I broke my last 13" at the fly in and have been using a 12".
I need to give the SSE a once over, it felt a little flaky rolling left, or could have just been the wind. That poor plane wobbles it's wings from too many impacts with earth. :) Still flies well, but some day its going to give it up, hopefully while landing so it doesn't hurt the engine or servos. |
All you guys who got to go flying this weekend. (Not fair). But glad to hear everyone had a great weekend so far. It has been. A awesome weekend for flying. Even got to see someone fly his floatplane off the lake we were at. Makes me want to build a floatplane or put floats on a kadet or astro hog.
|
Depending on humidity I may or may not head out again today. The field though may still be wet, and I don't like getting my feet wet. I don't like sweating either. Screw it, I think I will just go work in my shop instead.

Sorry guys, I've not gone pure SIG on my L4 conversion...I used an Eflite Super Cub landing gear, but you have to admit it looks the part:p:cool:
The rest of the build will be on Cub Brotherhood ;) |
Nothing wrong with that I have Robart gear on my SIG 1/5th scale Cub!
|
Flyer's right - not a thing wrong with that set-up. It looks GREAT!!!
|
In that case guy's, I won't tell if you don't:p;)...Eflites are anyway white, these will be Olive Drab:p
