It was actually a fun, stressless build. Typical Sig quality in the box. I used ,most of the supplied hardware. I just wish they would reverse their policy on supplied gear wire. The box comes with wire bent for a tricycle setup. You have to order the wire setup for tail dragger configuration from Sig. as I see it most builders choose tail dragger setup.

If I were to build one, one of the first mods that I would investigate, would be a fuselage mounted main gear, for a tail dragger set up. That way, I get use an easily purchased after market landing gear.
So i cut the dihedral in 1/2. Then make a i peace fuselage dubbler, then mount a block in the fuselage just to head of the wing to make the landing gear mount, then use the landing gear from the 4*60. |

Here are some nicer photos. I wanted to build “to plan” on this Hog so I have a base reference on how Sig designed the kit. I think a fuse mounted gear is a great idea for those flying in anything other than putting green quality grass or asphalt or fabric. My field is darned smooth, rolled putting green quality. 1/2dihederal is fine along with dual aileron servo’s. I will fly this one for a year or two, then sell it off after I build a replacement that will be finished in Koverall and dope and then I will think about incorporating some mods. For now this one was a good start.

Look what just jumped up on the bench today after cleanup.

Geez, I'm gone for a few days and it seems like everybody's got a plane ready to go all at once. Great builds, guys!!!!!
|
Yeah just finished up the two fazers and its on to the 168 rascal
|
So Capt, are you going to rebuild that monster? If so, are you going to modify the wing or just use the "band-aid" struts?
|
Well i got a another one and yea iam adding carbon fiber to the spar and a one piece spar caps. Going try and take out another couple pounds of lead. Also will definitely use the struts.
|
Now that the 4*60 W/retracts is done, I moved on to my Ziroli B-25. Right wing has the aileron and flap done, working on the left wing and will have that done my next time in the shop. I still have a few repairs to do, need to finish the T-clips rebuild, need to put in the tank and balance it and I think that is it, and maybe finish the cowl on the 1/5th Cub and patch the lower wing mounting holes, and maybe move the strut mounts to under the fuse and make new struts. It was my Biper Cub experiment that came out too tail heavy to do anything with. Would need 14 ounces of lead in the nose to balance. I also have the cowl for the P-47 to finish sanding and smoothing so I can make a mold from it. It got busted up when I bounced a wing off a building, and is too heavy to use. The plane needs nose weight, but using a heavy cowl is not the way to do it as the cowl would wind up getting torn up at the mounting tabs. Have quite a few projects sitting around, including a P-51 and Corsair that need to be completed.

I was hoping he was building from the plans rather than ordering a new one. I know, if it was me, I'd be cutting just as much weight out of the tail as humanly possible as well

if there were plans it would be a great idea. Now i can copy the tail and make it all out if Balsa. |
The 168 doesn't have plans. Its all tabbed construction. It really is an easy to assemble kit, on that part they fully succeeded, though the manual is missing some key details as I missed a few parts in the tail and had to open it up to correct it. There was also an alignment issue with a couple former's in the tail where they are not fully symmetrical, and caused a twist. With a few modifications to the kit and manual, even a first time builder can build one.
|
Okay, something that I didn't know, the kit didn't have plans. That is a first for me, every Sig I've built had a plan sheet so you could replace damaged/missing parts as needed.
|
I saved all the scraps so I can make new parts if I need to, and will most likely make a new tail from foam and Carbon Fiber to hopefully shave 2 pounds from the tail which should remove 6 from the nose.

We have a covered fuselage. Wow forgot how big this thing is. And because of my daughter and her liking the color blue. Well let’s just say it is blue.

It's a pretty blue, what color are you going to trim it in?
|
cmy6, what a nice job you did! The covering is very impressive. The only thing that I would be concerned about is the landing gear wire, seems pretty thin. Maybe it's just the picture.

Well Jay does have an interesting collection.

He certainly does, no doubt about that.
