Fly North 06-07-2014 06:17 PM

Thanks guys I will beef up the tail as the fuselage is the next step on the plan . That suspension on the tail wheel is a great idea ! Just curious on what your thoughts are on just making the wheel work like a castor and move freely to however the rudder pulls it ?

jeffie8696 06-07-2014 06:26 PM

Who was there today, I was in the blu tshirt that said eat sleep fly and the black SIG hat. Hung out mostly with Bob and at the hanger near the full scale plane.

Ground handing in the wind would be a real pain. The tail wheel kits like the one Goldberg has and Dubrovnik makes one also has a spring on each side. Or you can tie it into the rudder and just use a coiled tail wheel assembly.

Reminder - please post some pics of the fly in and facilities. Wishing all who made it a blessed weekend.

I was just released from the Hospital today. I will be with you guys in spirit and hope lots of pics posted. I was really looking forward to this more than anything in a long time. A place I've always wanted to visit, The Sig family who I've always admired, actually meeting Hazel whom has always been a hero and of course meeting all you guys to shoot the breeze, share in mishaps and celebrate those near misses and greased landings. :-) Lastly picking up, finally after all these years, a real SIG 1/4 scale CUB.

Wishing all who can make it a fantastic weekend!!

Do me a favor - wear bug spray on those ankles so you don't get a spider visit while on the sticks thinking you guys are lunch. LOL

There are a couple models available through Tower right now - links below:
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXCLK9&P=0 - this is a Great Planes "scale" set-up with pull-pull springs that connect directly to rudder

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXYXH5&P=0 - this is a Great Planes general purpose "medium weight" set-up, also pull-pull springs to rudder

Either unit should do pretty well on most planes (LXYXH5 is close to what's on my 1961-era Great Lakes biplane). My only question on either of these types is how you'd get the linking springs from the tail wheel UP THROUGH THE FUSE ON THE LT40 TO THE RUDDER. I may be wrong here but, I think I'd opt for a belcrank connecting to the rudder control rod, then to the tail-wheel - - unless you're thinking of a totally free-wheeling castor unit. In that case, I'd go with something like the Dubro unit - http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXD850&P=0 - - all you have to do is bend the strut to where you want it, to trail along.

I was there, had the red white and blue LT40 tail dragger and solid blue 4*120 with clipped wings that was having a hard time landing. Got to see Bob fly his Bugatti he talked about at Toledo. What a fantastic flying plane he made. Did you see that nice little mid air during the landing game? Darn rain sure put a damper on all the flying, but hey with only 3 flights in, I still managed 3rd place in the Poker contest and one some CA glues. Hazel was there too during the picnic. My wife and I had a great time despite the rain. I also picked up 2 gallons of 15% fuel, some dope and a Catabria kit that I have been wanting for a while now.

Kevin,

A couple of ways we have used at the factory are pull-pull cables from the rudder servos, or run a nylon tube in tube pushrod from the servo to the tiller arm on the nose wheel. It can also be done with a regular tail wheel bracket under the rudder hinge line and a long tail wheel wire through the bracket to the bottom of the rudder but this is a pain to get lined up.

Cheers,

Bob from Sig

What kind of motor help do you need for the Wonder?

I left right when the rain started in , I do remember hearing a big crunch right about then. I left with 23 gallons of fuel LOL , long story.

Leroy Gardner 06-08-2014 06:13 PM

It's surprising how many Sig kits have been made and how fast the thread has grown. I don't know if the early kits were any better than what their turning out today, my 1/4 scale SW11 kit was terrible and much of the wood was replaced. It's a shame a company like Sig would resort to producing such poor quality wood and stamped sheets in their kits. I'm not sure I want another one but they have a nice line up of kits full of bad wood.

Leroy

Super08 06-08-2014 06:18 PM

Strange Sig used to be known all around the world for the quality of their balsa. I do know all these wind turbines going up are using up massive amounts of balsa for the cores of the blades.

I don't know how old the kits were for those complaining about bad wood, but all the SIG kits I have built had good wood, not a single piece needed to be replaced. The LT-40, 4 Star 120, and the 1/5th Cub had nice straight flat wood with tight grain and very light.

I did talk to them about this and their answer was exactly what I thought it would be, not going to happen. Unfortunately we have seen the last runs of the US 1000 kits.

Super08 06-09-2014 07:20 AM

Thanks Ken, it was what I expected as well. It may change some day as I think building kits is starting to show a comeback of sorts. Over time the the killer for large ARF planes will be the cost to ship them.

Slightly OT but:
That is too bad. The US 1000 is a great plane to fly.
I still have a US 1000 kit I was thinking of selling. I wonder what the kit is worth?

It was good to see SIG Brothers acdii, jeffie8696, and c-crunch at the SIG Fly-In this past weekend. Friday's weather was perfect with sun, temp in the 80's and very low wind - OK, well a little less humidity would have made it even better.

Saturday featured a 6 hour rain delay from about 1:00pm to 7:00pm. Things got pretty soggy! Many fliers left the field, but those that stayed enjoyed LOTS of great hangar flying stories. We went forward with the free "hamburger burn" for the entrants and their families a little earlier than normal, with everyone crowded into Hazel's main hangar. Hazel came up from her house in the rain, pulling her "Spacewalker" colored golf cart right inside the hangar. With the constant chatter and the rain hitting the metal roof, it was a busy noisy place. Only quiet time was when the Belmont Stakes horse race started on the TV.

After the rain stopped a handful of dedicated fliers enjoyed some of the best calm conditions of the whole weekend. It turned into one of those ideal flying sessions where you can't help but enjoy one pretty touch-and-go after another.

Thanks again to all who attended. We hope to see you at SIG FIELD next year.

I've been saying for the last couple of years that I believe that kit building is going to make a sort of a comeback in the next few years. There are many reasons why they are going to get tired of ARFS. Luckily we still have companies like our beloved Sig here that are feeding us kits to supply our habit!!!!!
