Thanks for the feedback on the L4.

Just curious, why do you think the L4 would fly any better than the J3? Same fuse except for the greenhouse, same engine, same wing, same weight? UNless there are differences that I am not aware of? Many L4 are made from J3 and vice versa. Both full scale and models. Just asking for my own education. Thanks.

s3nfo 03-13-2017 02:47 PM

Don't know why, but I've flown both and built by several different builders and I always think the L-4 version flys better.

I think the difference is in the pilot's perception.

For instance, I always think that Cubs, with wheel pants, fly better than those without.

I haven't decided on which way I will follow on my BUSA Cub.

FlyerInOKC 03-15-2017 08:03 AM

An interesting discussion.

foodstick 03-15-2017 12:00 PM

Yellow cubs run hot and cold here... You will see SO MANY for awhile you tire of them..and then you won't see them at all. So possibly that figures in to the perceived difference?

For sale....BUSA SPAD X-III ready to fly. I have too many planes and need to thin the herd a bit. This plane is ready to fly with a USA 41 engine and all servos installed. It has flown many times and is a great flyer. $650 You will have to pick up the plane in Lansing, KS (near Kansas City).

jwrich 03-17-2017 01:57 PM

Charlie, if I didn't already have one, I would buy yours. I can understand thinning out your fleet, but why the Spad? I know it is a great flying airplane, someone is going to get a good deal. It flew great every time I saw it fly.

Do you think you can come to our Okie Dawn Patrol in July? We had several pilots, many airplanes and we did fly at dawn. It is a little strange taking off in the dark. The weather was great, lots of fun!!

radfordc 03-17-2017 02:08 PM

The SPAD is for sale because it takes twice as long to put together as the Nieuport 28....so it never seems to make it to the field. I may be able to make it to Guthrie this year for either the big bird or the dawn patrol. Are you going to Eureka Springs?

jwrich 03-17-2017 02:39 PM

I do plan on going to Eureka Springs, I think the wife may go with me. Got a question. did you move the balance of your spad forward, if so how much. Jim Suchy, who built the the 1/4 and then designed the 1/3 scale, said on the 1/4 scale the cg should be moved forward. I am just not comfortable fly my Spad, thinking about adding a little more weigh in the nose.

When I built the plane I added a couple of pounds of lead to the nose. Flying showed that it was too nose heavy. I eventually took all the lead out.

Here is what I said when I did the W&B, "I did the weight and balance today using a Vanessa rig. Even with the big hunk of engine the plane was still somewhat tail heavy. The plans call for 4.25" back from the LE. I needed a couple of pounds of lead to get it to that mark. However, the total weight is still under 19 lbs according to my "not so digital" scale.

Here is what I wrote about the plane after the first few flights, "After 4 flights I'm very pleased with how she flys. I took all the lead out of the nose and now she flys much better. I think the CG shown on the plans is far to forward for good flying. With a 10 mph headwind the takeoff roll was less than 20 feet. Rolls are "scale-like"...somewhat slow and requires a dive and pull up to look right. Multiple loops are easy from level flight. Snap rolls and spins start and stop with no problem. Landings are slow and easy. I think I can move the batteries behind the wings and make it even better. "

Charlie

radfordc 03-17-2017 06:48 PM

Here is a flight video after removing the nose weight.

https://youtu.be/MbSWYMhenjg

jwrich 03-17-2017 08:18 PM

So, how far back from 4.25 did you go and not be tail heavy? Did you go back a 1/2, 3/4, 1 or more. I really want to get this one flying where I can enjoy it as much as I do the Fokker D-VII. I used the Vanessa rig, set it at 4.25 from the leading edge. I think I'll this weekend Ok? when would good for you?

Thanks
Rich

radfordc 03-18-2017 07:40 AM

I'm not sure how far back the CG is. After the initial W&B I just kept taking a little weight out of the nose until the plane was flying good.

jeffEE 03-18-2017 08:37 AM

JWRich, in a post you said that Jim Suchy, drew up 1/3 scale plans for the SPAD? Is there any way to get a copy? I keep asking Balsa USA about their big SPAD and they keep telling me they are not kitting a 1/3 scale SPAD. It would look great setting next to my DRI. Oh and where can I see more about this Okie Dawn Patrol in July? Thanks for any information.

jwrich 03-18-2017 12:35 PM

Jeff, go to RCSCALE BUILDER.COM. in the forum section, Scrach Builds, page 4, SPAD XIII 1/3 scale, Tmoth.
If you are not a member you can register as a guest to view the site, however you are limited to 5 posts. Membership is $20.00 a year, it is worth every penny. Lots of great builders that pass on multitudes of information.

Jim does sell his plans and some of the special FG parts and if you do a construction thread on RCB, he will he watching. Great guy, very talented.

av8ter 03-18-2017 02:28 PM

Add me to the Balsa USA brotherhood please. 1/3 scale Fokker D-VII and 1/3 scale J-3 cub.

jwrich 03-18-2017 04:31 PM

Welcome Larry, I'll assign you a number. If would please post picture of your plane, we all would like to see them. I haver the Fokker D-VII and the Pipe Cub, both are 1/4 scale. I am not sure where Dickinson TX, is but you may be interested in attending our Okie Dawn Patrol in July. It is the next weekend after the 4th July holiday in Guthrie. We do fly at dawn. I will post more about it as time draws near. Again Welcome and post often we like to hear about folks from around the country and world.

It would be helpful for me if all BUSA Brothers would post their BUSA Brotherhood number in their signature. If I have missed anyone please let me know.http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/images/smilies/cool.png

I'm a Charter Member and a lifetime supporter.

There's a lot of good scale building info on RCSB.

Jeff, I forgot to answer your question about the Okie Dawn Patrol. It is held at the Sooners Squdron field in Guthrie, Okla, which about 40 miles north of OKC. I am not sure where Farmington, MN is or how far it is from us. You can find out information on these sites, soonerssqudron.org click on OKSS Events scroll down to July and you can open the flyer for the event. Also, you can go to the tulsagluedobbers.com, click on pic/video, scroll down to Guthrie Dawn Patrol 2016, there are several pictures. If you scroll down to video open it then scroll down to Dawn Flight at 2015 Oklahoma. I hope you can find all of this. We do have a lot of fun at this event, damn, no one got many pictures and or video of the 2016 event. I thought someone else was taking the pictures, we were all flying.

If you have any questions, just ask .

Rich

So the video shows that you really do not have a Dawn patrol. You have a PRE dawn - Dawn patrol. Man it was dark when they started flying! I may have to drive down and join you.

Bring a wide brim straw hat you'll be glad you did! Downtown Guthrie is very historic being the original Territorial Capital so if the Mrs./significant other other comes there is plenty to interest her if she is less interested in the Patrol. There is also a great BBQ place next to I35 at one of the main Guthrie exits.
