You will have fun with the Shrike! I built a cart for it to ride on for take off. Some guys even made the cart with r/c steering. If I remember, I had a TT.46 with a Mac pipe and a 10x10 prop. Truly a fun plane for speed!

Hows the build going?

foodstick 10-17-2017 06:28 AM

This is a plane I always wanted to build.. but I worry my eyes and reactions may not be up to it !

Quikturn 10-26-2017 05:57 PM

Fun airplane! Good luck with the build.

I built and flown the Shrike 40. Would like to build another someday. Just make sure the top and bottom look different when covering. You’ll appreciate that when flying.

Shrike Kit Modification

I decided change the aileron commands, instead of using the regular commands I will put two servos using a "Y" extension.
It's important design a small box to accommodate the servos.

Fixing Rudders

The easy way to mount the rudders.
Put a 1/16 strip balsa on the side of the spar, one in each side. Use the sander each side in order to have a 10 degree. Adjust to fit perfect. Check in the photos.

Quikturn 01-02-2018 12:18 PM

Great job! Looks like it’s coming along nicely. Kind of an unorthodox build, isn’t it? Can you take a pic of how your getting the 10 degree tilt on the tail?

Using two servos Futaba S3102 to operate the aileron, this servo has metal gear, but itís not necessary to this command

Pitch Gauge

I used the Pitch gauge to Mesure the 10 degree inclination of the ruder

OK. Nice!

If I remember, I think I made a jig out of scrap balsa for the 10 degree tilt. But cutting that angle was a pain in the butt. I too used a Servo for each aileron. I also made a dual rudder modification using a single servo. I had the 40 size Shrike with an OS 40 FSR and tuned pipe. The tuned pipe set up also kept the airplane clean too!

I happen to find pictures of my old Shrike 40 and the cart that I used for it to take off.

Quikturn 01-08-2018 06:49 AM

RCfFyerDan, how well did the takeoff cart work? Looks interesting. Nice job on your Shrike too. Damn! Makes me want to build another.

If someone was around, they would toss it for me. But most of the time I just hand launched it myself. I actually preferred to do it myself because some people didn’t toss it right. Mine practically flew out of my hand with hardly a dip.

I did break a few props on landing until I figured out how make it stop horizontally after engine cutoff.

RCFlyerDan 01-08-2018 07:52 AM

The cart worked very well on a paved surface. There were metal axles that went between each wheel the span of the cart. So, it wouldn't work off of grass, unless using different axles. The front post couldn't be too high, or the plane wouldn't clear the cart and leave the cart. I used water heater insulation round foam under the front with a couple degrees of up incidence. It was fun to watch and fun to fly. I did see another cart where the guy put a servo and steering on the cart. He bound both receivers to the same transmitter for the dual purpose. I didn't like the risk of throwing it on my own and would never let anyone at the field throw it for me either. As you are aware, most threw it into the ground if given the chance. My last one, I had a TT.46 Pro with a Mac pipe and an APC 10x10..........would haul a s s !!!

Awesome shrike so far!!!!

Love the single wheel idea. Next crazy idea would be to make it retractable as they have with gliders.
