Sig Hog Bipe - Glow or Electric
 

Hi,

I am in the process of building a Sig Hog Bipe from a kit. I fell in love with this plane when I saw it at the field and I just "had" to have one.
I am deciding on maybe going towards my first electric plane with the Hog Bipe.

Does anyone have any input on this matter? Should I make the conversion, or just keep it as a glow plane? I do not have the glow engine, so I will be needing to purchase with the glow or electric motor.

I only fly electric and at mid to small sizes (say glow 60 equivalent and below), you can't beat the power to weight ratio. The Hog Bipe, like most Sig kits is a good platform for electric conversion. I am in the process of building one as an electric right now, and it has been a fairly easy conversion. That said, if you are not currently flying electric, it does represent a fairly significant commitment to batteries, a good charger and various odds and ends that do tend to add up. You will be on your own to select motor/battery/ESC/prop combo (you will be able to find plenty of help here or from others who have done it, but Sig does not offer any specific advice).

If this is truly your first electric, I would recommend starting with a project that is designed specifically for an electric option. That will take a bunch of variables out of the equation allow you to start accumulating the hardware bits and the knowledge with confidence. Of course, if you have a good resource at your club that can help point you in the right direction, that could change the equation too.

I have several electric powered models, so I have nothing against them. I do know that the 4 stroke powered Hog Bipes, that I have seen, are among the best flying models at any flying field.

I suggest that you take a long look at placing a suitably sized four stroke in your hog Bipe.
