Is Balsa like a fine Wine?
 

Hi Guys,

I was wondering does anyone know what the lifespan of Balsa is if it is kept well over the years? It all looks good No warps, not brittle etc.

I'd say you kind of answered your own question ... If it not warped or brittle, or has any obvious signs of mold or insect damage, it is probably OK.

I acquired a huge stock of balsa over the years that I pick from when building and supplement with new wood as required. The only problem I have ever found with my old stock is that exposed surfaces seem to oxidize a bit over the years. Glue doesn't stick to this dusty, oxidized surface but a quick pass or two with a sanding block resolves the issue.

I can't say that balsa improves with age but I can't see that it degrades much either.

The key is moisture content. As long as it's moisture is maintained, it should last as long as any wood will.

balsa is like any other wood, the conditions of it's storage will be the determining factor for the condition of it's usefulness and lifespan. it is very a porous wood, it absorbs moisture like a sponge. like any other wood,.... if stored for long periods,...storing in a cool dry place out of direct sunlight and sealing the ends of a board with shellac or fingernail polish will do a lot to keep it dry and light. be sure it is laid flat and/or if stacked straight up, leaning as little as possible.

Food for thought: I saw a claim a while back, that stated, by weight, balsa costs more than gold....
