Recommendation for Pitts Special Kit?

Hi All,

I would like to build a model of the Pitts Special, and was wondering if there is a kit that you would recommend. Specifically, I want to build a scale version of the Telex Pitts S-1-11B that Mike Wiskus flys. (see the following link for details)

http://www.sportaerobatics.com/telex_pitts.htm

Any ideas you could give me would be appreciated. I am thinking about this as my building project for next winter.

Thanks,

Treker

Nice plane. Its going to be hard to balance with the nose so long. Good luck on your project.

You could go with Hostetler plans for the S-1-11b, then get a precut kit from all american kit cutters?? Maybe anyway??

Check out the Midwest Products Super Stinker. You should have an easy time kit-bashing it into what you want. It's a very good kit, and it flies great when it's done.

Thanks Rich. I think the Midwest Pitts Super Stinker is just what I am looking for.

Now, what are some engine recommendations for this plane? I was thinking about the Saito FA-182TD opposed twin for this model. Any other recommendations? The suggestion on the Midwest web site is for a 1.5 to 2.7 four stroke. Will this engine have enough power for good aerobatic performance?

Thanks for your input.

Hi,
I have built a Mid Super Stinker recently. I have not the engine for it yet, but almost everybody will tell you that the best engine is the Moki 180.
I bought a Brisson 2,4 (still waiting..) and will not use the inverted pitts muffler, but side muffler to save some weigh. Another member of our club has it with a Laser 200 V twin, but it is not enough power, definitely needs more. I would be glad to let you know later about how it turns out, just drop me a mail in about two months.
The plane builts nice, but you may need a fiber cowl from Stans Fiber. They are nice.

Sorry, didn´t comment on your Saito 182 option, I am afraid you will need more power. Should use a 200 or bigger (twin). As for example, I have one Ultimate Pitts from Lanier, which is very similar to the midwest kit, with a YS 140 DZ (same cost of the twin 182) and the performance is extremely nice, this plane is an arrow, truly unlimited vertical performance. You should take a look, I have both kits and I personally was happier building the Lanier (laser cut). Both planes are almost the same size, but I think the S. Stinker (as I see at the field) doesn´t fly as straight as the Ultimate, or might be because it needs more power. Finally, running the DZ with heli fuel makes no sense to use a smoke system, it produces a lot of white smoke that looks nice agaisnt the blue sky.

Looks like you may want to look at the Lanier Ultimate Pitts Kit. It looks like the picture of the Pitts you referred to and a 182 Twin will fly it .
