Hi bayareajeff,

A beautiful looking bird. I trust it will fly as well as it looks:D.

You are much braver than I in risking the wrath of the R/C gods in taking photographs of a model befor the maiden.

I flew the trimming flight of a 60 P51D a few weeks ago and found it very hard to see the silver at anything beyond close range. Keep it close to you. He has since added yellow bands to the ventral surface. Not scale but much easier to orientate.

Good Luck,

Colin

Thanks Kmot and Collin! I'd Rather post them now rather than after it has been rekitted!

All the best

Awesome work Bayar !! I've been following your build for a while and it inspired me to start my own gp p51, although I don't think I'm going to glass mine. Just monokote. If I can recall you've got a 50 upfront right ? Can't wait to hear about the maiden. GOOD LUCK !![sm=wink_smile.gif]

Great looking 51! I've got one of these kits myself. Seeing what a nice job you did makes me want to drag mine out and have a go at it. Good luck with the maiden.

Mike

You are going to love this plane. Flys great. Mine is 6 years old, powered by a Super Tigre 40, Slimline muffler and has BG mechanical retracts. I have 14 planes is flying condition and this is still one of my favorites.

Thanks Everyone for the compliments. THis is one of those planes I have always wanted! Turned out just like planned!

Well ok.. I would call this a 98% successful Maiden flight!
:D
I was doing some Taxi tests with my P-51 and it was going great. I was a little nervous and then I got a lot nervous. So I had my friend Rob step in and test fly it. He wanted me to do it , but I psyched myself out. It taxi'd awesome. Straight and true and the tail came up so nice. . But alas I handed over the controls and he took it off. Way cool! Well except I left a tire on the ground... Well we can deal with that later. It flew perfect. She rotated about 1/2 throttle and flew fine about 3/4. I am using a Tower .46 with a 11/6 prop. Not one single trim adjustment. Rob was going to land it, but I figured that if the tire came off, fly it some. Might as well fly it before I have to fix it. I went and got my camera and took a few pics. I was so stoked I wasn’t paying attention really. So I only got a few with my Canon DLS. Just about then the engine sounded a little rough. Later we found out that the muffler came lose. I should have used lock tight. Oh well, time to make a decision about the landing. Rob wanted to land on the runway with the gear down. Hmmm I figured stubby would do more of a stick rather than a drag, so I opted for the gear up grass. Rob did perfect. Not a scratch on it. I thought we bent up the muffler but it coming lose was a bit of a blessing in disguise. No damage. So, my conclusion is.. what a great plane! I can hardly wait until Monday to fly it some more. Here are some shots. I will try and take some video on Monday too.

Nice plane! I've been thinking about building this kit myself. I may retire my Hangar-9 Twist so I'll have an OS 70 4-stroke with no home. The Mustang would be a good place for it.

Nice plane, glad the in-flight emergency turned into a non-event. One of our club members has one done up in olive drab with invasion stripes. It flys amazingly and looks fantastic in the air. Enjoy yours!

Cheers!

Bayareajeff, I have to compliment you on your P-51 AND on the excellent pictures you posted! Your plane looks awesome, both on the ground and in the air. Thanks for sharing them with us.
A couple of observations and a few questions:
I noticed you located your tail wheel in the scale location. Nice touch! It looks so much better than attached to the rudder.
Did you install flaps? The 3rd picture in Post #2 looks like a flap in the down position. If it is an aileron, doesn't it interfere with the wing fillet in the up position?
If I understood Scooty correctly, you glassed yours? How much does it weigh?

The reason for the questions, is your pictures have motivated me to get back to work on my GP P-51. It's all framed up and ready for glass. I built it with flaps, pneumatic RoboStruts, and will use a YS 63. It'll probably weigh a ton and fly like a brick, but it'll look good... ;)

Anyway, thanks again for the excellent pictures of your awesome plane! Great job! [sm=thumbup.gif]

7th Angel..

Thanks for the compliments and the encouragement. .

I moved the tail wheel.. that went pretty well over all and was easy to do. I added the flaps - although after flying this plane it slows down to a craw for landings. But they look good. I think my ratio on the flaps to Aileron was about 11" for Ailerons and 15" for flaps. I just got the measurements off a 3 view.

THe plane weighs about 6-6.5 lbs. (bathroom scale) I have a Tower Hobbies .46 with an 11x7 prop on it. Its not terribly fast but it will go vertical - Its a good balance for right now. I mght try and get some more speed out of it rather than torque. I have the Dave Brown retracts. THey are ok but I am not real wild about the wire struts. I might consider the Robostruts or maybe make my own. I did glass the plane.. you can see more on that in this thread.. and the tail wheel too.

Well i am glad I have been able to bring some motivation to the table fore you... and you are right about it looing good! :D

Cheers..
Peace to you!
Jeff
