Sad thing Ken, the weatherman is not predicting any let up soon!!! Yesterday at our field the wind was 20MPH and 90 degree cross with 108 degree temp.

Same thing here North of the state line in KS. Hot, windy, problems with engines not keeping in tune, and DO NOT KNEEL DOWN ON ASPHALT WEARING SHORTS TO START AN ENGINE[:@]. Has anybody noticed that the mosquitos are getting nastier? The Ultra Sports have been the only planes I have been flying this summer because they are my most predictable and reliable.

Looked at the 10 day forecast, yup Matadco, your right, nothing but 97+ predicted. Looks like early morning flying only for this month.

I feel your pain, this tropical storm is an hour from passing over my head (I am in the direct path) and the weather is sunny and 90 degrees. Not a drop of rain and the winds are only around 30 MPH......seems like noone can catch a break in the weather lately!

Me and a couple of the guys flew at 7am Saturday morning. It stayed unusually cool until 9am when a string thunderstorms hit and didn't even break a sweat. Flew the wings off my green Ultra Sport 40 and had a blast with it. Now it looks like hot muggy mornings again for a while. At 5am today it was 82 degrees with 79% humidity.

Finally got the Ultra Sport 40+ finished.Super Tiger 45 with an OS 46 muffler.Futaba 9CAP/PCM receiver.yes I still fly 72,but
I am slowly coverting to 2.4.Have a FrSky 2.4 in another 9C used on 2 other planes.went through my monocote stash to see what I had.Found 1 new roll of missile red,3/4 roll of yellow and 1/2 roll of black.Came up with a simple covering scheme but should be
very visible.Has hobbico mechanical retracts with a JR RT-88 retract servo.Standard futaba 3003 servos on everything else.Caught them on sell at Tower for 8.99 each, bought 6,then had a $20 off a $50 order.$38 shipped for 6 servos.yet to maiden it.If weather stays clear today,I will go flying this afternoon around 5 or 6. here are some pics of the US 40+.

Good job P47Tbolt, I hope you have lots of fun with your US+ as I've had with mine :D (see my avatar)

Has anyone built an Ultra Sport 40 + and put a Saito 80 in it? I have a US 40+ kit I'm about to start and a Saito 80 that is looking for a home.

MinnFlyer 08-23-2011 03:10 AM

RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***

I put a Saito 80 in my first US40 (not the Plus) and it was really a dog. The older 80 had a lot of weight and not much power. It's better suited for a Cub-like plane

KaP2011 08-23-2011 04:45 AM

RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***

Hi MinnFlyer, Thanks for your advise. Not what I wanted to hear but given your background and experience I believe it is some that I should heed. I recon I'll just trade the Saito for a good 2 stroke. Any sugestions for the best engine for this bird? I had an Ultra Sport 60 with an OS .61 back in the 90's, that was my favorite plane of all time. It made my flying look good. But a .61 2 stroke for this plane seems a bit too much. Maybe I should just trade up for a US 60, I've got a brand new OS 91 FS II that also needs a home.

MinnFlyer 08-23-2011 04:51 AM

RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***

Personally, I would trade up for a US60, but if you can't, any good 46 will do well in the 40+

HFrank 08-23-2011 05:00 AM

RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***

Hi Kap2011, the US+ is not a heavy plane at all, but it likes lots of power, mine has a Magnum XLS 52 that has gobs of power with the same weight of a .46, but others have installed .61 or even .75 two stroke in it, wich in my opinion is overkill. I think any good, powerful 2 stroke in the range of .46 to .55 is more than enough for it.

RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***

I had 2 US 40's with a Saito 80 with 12x12 APC prop and they both were rockets and I loved them. Flutter took one and a "down draft"
(otherwise known as Dumb thum) got the other. Please try different props before you consider a 4 srtoke inaddequate.

Ardee ( I don't remeber my brotherhood number)

RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***

Maybe it needed a vlave adjustment or a different prop.

RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***

After fussing with that engine for over a year including adding a pump, I finally tried a 12x6 prop and it ran great...

However, I run a 12x7 prop on an OS 70, why would I want to run a smaller prop on a bigger, heavier engine???

But I finally found a good home for that saito - When I go fishing, I use it for an anchor! :D

rickbrad 08-23-2011 06:17 PM

RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***

Aww Mike, that's not fair! I have had one of the older, heavier Saito 65s and it was an anchor, but on the Sig Rascal 40 it is (was, I traded that plane)really a good engine. Ihave the Saito 56 on my Tower Trainer 40 and it is SO fun to fly. It will practically fly around at idle, and it sounds really, really good in the air.

I have a Saito 125 that Iam going to install on my GP Aeromaster currently under construction. You talked me out of using the Saitoit for my US 60 and I tend to think with the retracts on the US and all the speed Ihope to get from that baby that a 2-stroke (Ifound and made a really good deal on an OS 75AX and can't wait to fly it by at 100 mph!) that was good advice. But the Saito will be a lot of fun on the AM.

I hope you are implying that those older, heavy Saitos are boat anchors, not the more modern lighter ones! Ilove the sound and Ilove the way once they are tuned you never have to tweak them again (in my limited experience).

KaP2011 08-23-2011 06:25 PM

RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***

I've always had good luck with Saito's. From what I understand the .80 is simply a .65 that's been bored out. It has the same crank case and is the same size and I believe is just a little heavier. Mine ran a 13X6 on a 4 Star 60 and pulled it around fine. The 4 star died from a "down draft". I then put it in a CMP Cessna 182, still with a 13X6 and the Cessna did great with that combo. But alas the Cessna also died of a "down draft". Both planes were around 8.5 lb. Maybe it could work in the US 40+. I'll have to wait until I get the US built and see what the weight works out to be. I intend to cover it with Coverite Fabric so I think it will be a little on the heave side. If all else fails, I still have a Super Tiger G51 that I could use....if I can get the blasted thing to run right.

Hey.. since I meet all the criteria for member ship, I've had a US 60, I'm about to build another US, and I love Ultra Sports put me down as #109.

RE: *** Ultra Sport Brotherhood ***

Buy yourself an OS 4-stroke and you'll never use a Saito again. OS run better out of the box, need no break-in time, use less fuel and spit hardly any gunk on your plane. Saitos slime a plane as badly as a 2-stroke does.
