Good Biplane Kit to Build

I am looking to build a nice .90 size or larger biplane and can't find any kits. Any recommendations? I would like the initial kit price to be around 200. Prefer a Pitts.

I don't know of any currently available kits, so you may have to track down an out of production kit. The Midwest Pitts Super Stinker comes up here in the classified ads and on ebay with some regularity. Very nice kit, goes together well. On ebay they generally go for around $200.

Check Balsa USA. They have a .90 size bi-plane kit. Look at the Phaeton .90 kit.

Good luck,

Steve

Take a look at the Sig Hog Bipe. I've seen a few of them fly and they are a good flying plane. Sig still shows them on the current plane list, but I don't know if they are shipping kits just now. If you can get one, you would enjoy it though.

I have been waiting for almost 6 months for SIG to get their kits cut and mailed. They should be done very soon if you order the hog straight from them.

you could look into short kits that are laser cut. The andrews aeromaster is a pretty nice biplane and it can be bought as a short kit here:

that reminds me, I do know someone who has a 1/6 scale picca waco that he wants to sell. The last time I checked though he wanted something like $200 - $250 dollars for it.

There is always the build from plans route. Kind of a kit without wood. It gives you a lot more options.

I'd go for it!

Let me qualify that statement:

I'd go for it! (If I had the funds to do so.)

As Don is mentioning, I built almost all my bipes from plans, RCM and MAN plans service. Plans building is just buying the plans and cutting your own kit with a scroll saw and sander then your good to go. If that is too much then searching for kits on ebay and RCU is another option. Just expect to pay more for the kits you find. Take a look at the Great Lakes too. I built the Krier Kraft from Gordon Whitehead plans and it was a great flying machine.

I second the Phaeton 90 choice. Looks like a beauty.

Gene, not to hyjack this thread, but I got my O.S 120 surpass II running like a top today. Nary a spray of fuel.

The 1/6 Picca Waco would be perfect. Does he still have the kit?

Thanks for all the advice thus far. I have thought about building direct from plans but not sure if what that big of a project. LOL!

SACKRC has a 1/5 scale Pica Waca NIB for sale. Look at post 10731 in the Waco thread.

I figured you had already looked at it , but I posted it just incase.
I built a GP Ultimate .40 a few years ago, really like the way it flew, but it was just to small for me. I have been kicking around the idea of having the plans enlarged up to a .90 1.20 size and hand cutting or contacting a kitcutter about cutting a kit.
What do you think about an Ultimate bipe ?

cwhipple 05-04-2010 08:19 AM

RE: Good Biplane Kit to Build

I agree with your. The Ultimate is a little small. I went with the Phaeton 90. 143 shipped is a good price. Tower has a special on orders of 149 or greater but I didn't see anything I liked! Sounds like the Phaeton is pretty popular.

RE: Good Biplane Kit to Build

I have a freind that flys one , really nice Bipe . The roll rate seemed a little slow, but it had alirons only on the bottom wing. I think installing upper alirons and a servo in the bottom wing for each side would make a big difference in the roll rate and handling. Don't get me wrong , it still flys very nice stock .
So , can we look forward to a build thread in the near future ?

I thought about putting ailerons on the top wing. Not sure of a full blow build thread!!! I don't have the skill of most of you guys! I did see we show up on the top posted forums!!! Will have to think about build thread!

The question was answered so it isn't a hyjack. When do you want mine to show up at your door??:) I'm sick of working on it. I know I need to replace the front bearing with a stock one. So much for BOCA. I just came up with a WEBRA .61 with a pump I want to work on. It would take care of all my fuel problems in my Daddy Rabbit if I get it working. Building a kit for another guy, almost finished then it needs to be covered. Just another 4* then back to my own build.

Any opinions on the CRRC-Pro 26cc for the Phaeton?

Very good engine, you will have to check the weight And see if you want to try one in that plane. I have only seen it used in the 90 size stunt planes and it really is a power house.
