Default Gyro for Caliber 3

Having mastered a Eski CP2 my son has decided to buy a Caliber 3. My part of the deal is to finance the Gyro and radio gear. As I use Futaba for my planes I thought I'd stick to that. So question is should I buy a GY401 and if so what servo to use with it, or given the circumstances should I go with the cheaper GY240 with a standard S3001 servo ??

The GY240 is a good entry level gyro as it's just plug and play so makes set-ip a doddle, but it does not have a switchable mode. Not something he'll be using for a while granted, but I would recommend the 401 for it's future-proofness. The 9253 is also the perfect middle of the road digital servo to use with this combination in my opinion. Don't use a standard servo with a heading lock gyro.

Good chouice on the Cali3 by the way

Regards. Ian.

The 401/9254 combo are the way to go if you don't want to be fussing with the tail.

When I bought my Caliber 3 I was flat broke so bought a CSM 180 gyro.... well, let's say it forced me to learn how to controll that tail!!! In the end I just closed my eyes and bought the GY401 which drives a Hitec HS6965HB servo. Money well spent. I don't really like that servo as it is very noisy and there seems to be an issue with pulse rates but the thing works very well. I run a GY401/Futaba S9254 on my Freya and that's a solid setup so when I have more cash to blow I will replace the Hitec servo on the Caliber. With the GY401 on the Caliber I can transition from full down to full up collective with very little tail movement (@ 85% sens) so I will never waste cash on a second rate gyro again.
