Default What to use to get starter shaft off ?

Once I get the piston locking tool in place and the engine in a vice (gently yes ?) what do I actually use to get the starter shaft off the clutch ? How do I apply torque to it. The old one I dont care about I could use pliers I suppose BuT the new ones how do I put them on ?
