Default Broken Drive Shaft!

Has anyone else had any problems with driveshafts breaking? I snapped a rear one today and I really dont have the money for MIP CVDs unless its just wasting my time replacing the broken one with a stock driveshaft.

I'd replace it with a stock one....much cheaper than going with MIP's. The stock ones are actually pretty good - you may have just gotten a weak one. Breaking shafts was an area of problem with the early production of the trucks, especially with the pins on the dog bone/cup end. I broke one within about three weeks of owning my first LST. Since replacing that one, I haven't broken one since.

They're rebuildable - so you don't have to buy the entire CVD.

Well I have broken two more drive shafts since the first one now I am starting to really wonder. Is anyone else having this problem? I do have a early numbered lst and the driveshafts that have broken are all the orginal ones as far as i know i bought the truck used. I just find it hard to believe that 3 shafts can break within a few runs of eachother.

Are the losi 30 doller shafts any good? or should i just get the MIP ones?

If the shafts that are breaking are ones original to the truck (and not the ones you're replacing them with), you probably are running into faulty shafts. The early production shafts were weak. It was a problem Losi admitted to and replaced FOC. Where are they breaking? Is it at the 'dogbone' end near the differential, or at the ball/cup joint?

Here's a post of some early user's thoughts on the MIP CVD's. Not sure whether or not they've revised them since the early production. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_23...tm.htm#2386497

I can't justify the cost of the MIP's - but I haven't had problems with the stock shafts after that first one.

You might check to be sure your outdrives aren't binding throughout their range of motion. Cleaning them periodically will also help longevity.

I broke my Front lf CVD two weeks ago. Bill from Team Losi sent me a replacement in 5 days. Mine broke close to the differential, for no reason, this happened during my break-in and the truck was not being pushed hard.
Contact Bill and explain your situation.

I also ordered MIP FR CVDs as a backup.

They are breaking right at the ball and cub joint. I havent noticed my outdrive binding but I will have to take a look now and see what their like.

Do you have 2 or 4 holes in the cups. 2 Holes=old, 4 Holes=New design.

Current models and replacement outdrive cups should have 4 holes in the cup part (You still only use 2). The original (Old Style and poor quality) design had only 2 holes in the cup portion.

You can get just the cup portion - LOSB3504 (Left side - Black) or LOSB3503 (Right side - Silver) and rebuild them using the same dogbone and CVD portion.

Just a note, when you rebuild them, be sure to use blue locktite on the CVD grub screw and line up the flat spot in the CVD pin. Do not overtighten them. I also recommend using heat shrink tubing (Available in the wiring section at Home Depot, Lowes, etc.) over just the joint to avoid losing any pins.

I got rid of the MIP's a long time ago. The only difference I could tell with them is they cost more and are weaker. I've heard MIP's is going to quit making them.

I run stockers in the back with Hotbodies boots.

Up front I run HotRacing drive shafts with stock axles and CNR 23mm Hubs. (the MIP's axles might be a good choice)

In general Hot Racing gear is complete krapp.
Stock on left HR on right, note bigger cut outs for CVD pin

Hot racing on left, stock on right.

Hotbodies boots are good.

Part # for the boots

I think pro-line 23mm hubs are hard on axles. I use CNR 23mm adapters.

Mips bent and pin gone

Mips with pin on it's way to being gone.

You can get the part# from that one pic and I ordered mine from Tower... After the Capt told me about them I can not believe I ever ran without them.

2D - Thanks for the update on the MIP's...and as always, great informative pics. I think the stock setup is still the best value out there. If they do break, they're pretty cheap to rebuild.

Do your Hotbodies dust boots stay in place pretty well when you're running?

Yes, they do, which suprised me. I've had one of the back ones come off twice but otherwise never a problem, they were still on after that 30minute main bathing my CVD's in a moly with graphite lube and keeping out the dust. I would order two packs so you can do your center CVD's also...

Just wanted to thank you guys for your help!

I did finally get home today to look at my lst and you were right I did have 3 old axles and one new one. So I'm going to order some new axles and shafts and see what happens.

Thanks again!
matt
