Default Silicon Diff Fluid for LST 2

Hello all,

I am changing out the diff cupps to the aluminum Nova cups in my LST 2 and I need to know what weight diff fluid to use? Should it be silicone? The guy at the LHS said to use 300k silicone in both diffs, (very thick) that is what he says he runs in his LST 1, I do not know what or how the different weights affect the driving of the truck. Also; how far up do I fill the diff cups? Any and all replys are appreciated>

Thanks

I assume you mean 30k. I dont know that 300k exists; but if it did; you'd essentially lock your diffs because it'd be like pouring dry tar into your diff casing.

30k is what Im using right now; havent tried others to compare, but I read 30k was a nice middle of the road for racing.

you fill it up to the cross bars.

I run 10k/30k on the racer and 50k/50k on the basher (f/r). I highly recommend using longer higher quality screws than the ones that come with the Nova diff cups..............

Thanks you guys, have you seen the Maximizer diffs? How do they compare to the Nova diffs?
Thanks

The manual says you can put Silicone in the diffs for a more viscous race effect. What does this do? Can you tell a difference?

its like having a LSD. you know how you can hold 1 tire and the other freewheel; and the freewheel will spin double speed and the held tire gets little to no force.

the silicone fluid puts resistance on the diff to give that held tire more coaxing to spin.

keeps from balooning 1 tire(locked diffs are good for rock crawling), but also hurts steering(outside tire needs to spin faster than inside to turn without resistance). so thick oil offers both; it wont really resist slight difference in rotating speeds, but it will resist excessive differences.

How long does the silicone diff oil last? How often should it be changed?

Thanks

It Last for a Long time as long as your Diff gaskit is Good,
I change the diff oil around every 4 gallons of Fuel or so.....
I'm sure the Racers would Change it more often.....

yeah; it is double protected, inside the diff case, and inside the inner case. silicone is pretty wicked stuff.

I think itd pretty much last as long as the gears/case.

What are the diff shims used for? And the gasket and the seal are one in the same, correct? What knid of fluid comes in them now?

diff shims adust the diff within the outer casing, to get the correct mesh between the ring and pinion gear.

seal and gasket are the same.

stock the inner diff gears are just lubed with the same grease as everything else.

Why is the diference from the racer to the basher? I race and often bash, I just filled my diff fromt 10k and 5k rear, and I am having spin-out problems, what do you recomend?

basher is less concerned with turning ability; more concerned with not ballooning one tire when you go over rough terrain(rougher than you'd expect for any race track)
