Default Super Trans Conversion

Project Speed! How to install a 30T or 26T on your AFT
30T = 1.46 to 1
26T = 1.75 t0 1

Items needed:
-Team Associated Forward & Reverse Drive Gears (25022)
-3/8 foam tape
-Scotch tape

Before starting, spin the input shaft to get an idea of how easy it spins. After removing one half of the case take note of the gear mesh and backlash. You will need it later. Lastly start with the REAR CASE on the truck. It holds the ring gear and will allow you to set the gear mesh and backlash.

1. Using a dremel tool with a sanding bit grind the input shaft bearing journals upward almost until you hit the upper transmission case bolt holes. You MUST grind from the outside of the case or the bit will not lay flat. Note: To be able to grind from the outside you will need to grind away some of the case where the imput shaft exits the transmission and also the opposite end. This is so the grinding wheel shaft can reach. Don’t worry this will be fixed later. [X(]

2. Because the sanding wheel is not perfectly square you will need to use a very small bit to clean up the inner corner of the grind.

3. The gear pins will need grinding to fit inside of the index on the gear. Wrap the input shaft bearings with scotch tape so the J-B Weld will not stick to the bearings. Fit the shaft to the top of the elongated journals and secure. Note: the pinion assembly should be in place to get the correct gear mesh and backlash.

4. Using small peaces of 3/8 foam tape, seal off any unwanted area that the J-B Weld could flow.

5. J-B Weld contains two tubes, one tube is liquid steel/epoxy resin, and the other contains hardener. When mixed together in equal portions, a chemical reaction occurs that turns the mixture into a compound as hard and tough as steel. Once mixed fill the wanted areas with the J-B Weld. Don’t be afraid to over fill the cavities a little, it can be sanded. You will need to give it at least 15 hours to dry per gluing!

6. Once you are finished with the first half and are happy with it you will use it to fit the other half.

7. Perform the same operations for the front case. Grind away jest enough material that the cases fit nicely.

8. Apply a little J-B Weld to the front case journals. Then assemble the cases with two or three screws. This will allow the mane case to align the input shaft to the front case.

At this point you should be DONE and can sit back and admire your work… Or you could just go out and buy a 70 mph car and be done with it.

rapsucks_07,

According to the a excel spreadsheet found at a lstforums site http://lstforums.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=349 the truck should hit 55 mph with 40 series tires and close to 70 with the stock tires. However I have notice that the stock engine with a HT pipe will not deliver enough horse power to get it to 70 mph. I also question if the truck will hold together at 70 mph. I am also using the 24/31 +6 Pinions found at http://www.1320.4t.com/custom2.html

You have to Elongate the Engine Mount Holes in the Chassis so you Can Move the Engine Back Enough to Set the Gear mesh.......(2 Mins with a Dremel.....Nothing to it really)

Triton5150,

JB Weld is still ticking! I have run about 8 to 10 tanks through this truck. All have been high speed sprints. Remember the JB Weld is just taking up space. Do some dental work, grind some groves, and ruff up the surface, it will hold. Good Luck!

I have checked it out several times even pulled it apart and nothing has come loose. Just so we understand each other, I did this for fun and had no expatiations. A lot of it will depend on your workmanship. Make sure everything is clean and grind in some dental work to give it something to hold on to.

Good Luck!

FYI

Just took the Trans apart and the JB Weld is still holding strong! I have run about one gallon of fuel using this transmission. This is just an update for those who are interested.
Thanks!

have you checked the speeds yet, I am thinking about getting an XTM 457 their .28 version boasting almost 3.5 hp @33000 rpm I think that should be enough HP to get the most out of the tranny, just wondering if the whole setup will really get the speeds up

msn15,

Originally I painted the case on the transmissions that I performed the gear swap on. This would allow me to identify them from the stock transmissions. I also think it looks cool.

UP Date,

JB Weld is still holding strong! The +6 pinion gears ( http://www.1320.4t.com/custom2.html )( +5 & +6 are no longer being produced ) with the Super Trans Conversion strains the second gear clutch (slips) the second gear shoes are glazed with aluminum after one run. I am in the process of locking it in second gear just to verify it truly is slipping. The truck will hit 45 mph (GPS); I am impressed to get that kind of speed with the smaller tires.
