clutch bell
How much can I sand the cb before it is useless I polished off my shoes yesterday and the bell is in pretty bad shape ...I hit it with the dremel a good bit last night and it could use a good bit more but I don't want to sand it to the point of being useless and have to take it off and get a new one anyway Thankx

RE: clutch bell
Well...it was time for me to do my routine clutch maintenance and I thought I'd take some before and after pics.

All the shims are there and perfectly aligned to allow for a nice spin of the clutch bell when mounted. The scratches are from the sand paper...nothing to worry about.
Do not add oil to bearings when they're going on the flywheel for the clutch bell. Any oil will cause the shoes to slip on the clutch bell and you'll end up wearing out your shoes very quickly. Actually, coming to think of it....I never oil any bearings as the come pre-oiled and any more oil will just attract dirt and make a mess. I wipe the bearings clean with a cloth and then install them because new bearings seem to be flowing with grease.

Actually, good point. I don't have the little washers since I never thought they were of much use. A bit of the scuffing on the shoes was caused by me when trying to remove the shoes with a flat head screwdriver. But you could be right...they could be a bit too close and might be rubbing against the flywheel. I'll try to find some little shims.

From the looks of the clutch shoes , it doesn`t look like that is from the flywheel . If it was it would be an even wear and not gouges in the shoes . Did you have a hard time taking the shoes off ? Looks like they were popped off with a screw driver and that is what the marks came from . The flywheel is flat where the shoes sit so I can`t see that causing it .

I was in a bit of a hurry to remove the shoes but it doesn't matter. I sanded the melted overhanging part out as you can see with my other pic with the cleaned and sanded shoes. They should still last another 2-3 gallons.
