Replacement Tires And Wheels LST XXL2-E?
 

The only wheels I can find are the stock losi wheels that come on it. I cant find any wheels that size (4") so I assume the tire size is rare also. Anybody else have this issue?

I guess everybody just uses stock wheels and tires when they ware out lol. I cant believe there is no after market wheels this size.

Losi went a little funky with the wheels but not as funky as you think. The wheels are 20mm hex and yeah nobody uses that besides Losi. For 20mm hex you have a choice of Losi dish wheels and the chrome ones and they're called Losi 420 for the size. These 420 wheels have a 3.8" tire mounting diameter which is the same as 40 series wheels so 40 series tires will fit Losi 420 wheels. 40 series wheels and tires used to be really popular, then monster trucks became less popular and when Traxxas came up with their own tire mounting bead (similar to buggy bead) 40 series basically disappeared. Unfortunately the Traxxas bead is also 3.8" which can lead to some confusion and since it's not a standard bead like 40 series the two are not compatible. You have been warned so double check the tire bead before ordering anything.

The choices in 40 series wheels and tires are really slim these days though. Proline has 40 series Trenchers (not the X, those are Traxxas bead) and one wheel in a standard offset. Axial has 40 series wheels but no tires, there's the Losi 420 stuff and that's about it besides whatever you can find that's used or old stock.

The LST2, XXL,XXL2 and XXL2e all use 8mm axles and can accept a wide variety of 17mm hex adapters though. I personally used Losi 8ight 1/2" extended adapters on my XXL because the 40 series is a little narrower than the Losi 420 and the 1/2" adapter put the outside edge of the tire equal to the Losi 420. The 8ight 17mm adapters did require a few shims behind them to take up the gap. Losi does have a 17mm kit for the LST2 that aren't extended and it includes a few shims to go behind the hex. With this kit and 1/2" offset wheels you won't lose any width at the outside edge of the tire. My Axial wheels aren't available in 1/2" offset though, come to think of it there's no 1/2" offset 40 series wheels, so I went with the 1/2" extended 17mm adapters instead.

So your basic choices are stay 20mm with Losi 420 wheels and your tire choices are limited to Losi and Proline Trenchers. Or you can swap to 17mm and run just about anything you want.

Thanks a lot, I been waiting for someone to explain that to me. I had no idea these wheels were such a goofy size. One of my favorite things about the truck is the big ball like tires so it looks like I'll continue to run stock setup as long as I own the vehicle. I wanted to own this vehicle for a long time but if the tires and wheels get rare and expensive then I'll probably flip this monster for a popular truggy. Thanks again for the info.

The stock wheels and tires aren't going to get rare, unfortunately aftermarket alternatives in 40 series are rare. That's why switching to 17mm hex and going with a more common 3.8 Traxxas bead monster truck tire is the common way to go. Stock tires are 6.75" tall, not sure of the width but they do fit the truck very well. My Trencher 40 series are 6.89" tall and not quite as wide but in my opinion they look good on the truck. I've seen pics of the XXL size trucks with smaller diameter tires and they still look good to me too. But everyone is different. You mention flipping the truck for a truggy. That I can understand, totally different animal and something worth trying out. But if you're going to get rid of this truck for another monster truck you're crazy. You're not going to find another monster truck that's better than the LST platform.

Theres always the option of trying to find some old Imex stuff as well, but the jumbo stuff gets pretty pricey on ebay, i wish they would get back in the game, I would love to find a set of these cheap

Billyg900 - My hobby shop that specializes in cars has a bunch of older stuff -Imex and such. I remember seeing some of those tires the last time I was in. I'll be stopping in this week for parts, so I'll see if they still have them and what they cost. If you're interested.

FWIW; I cheap out and use regular Losi dish wheels with 20mm and 23mm hexes. I like the stock ATX tires - they seem to last forever. I also have a set of big joes and mashers that work well. The ATX tires are better for wheelies I've noticed. The big joes are a harder compound, but traction is awesome. Losi sells wheel hexes that fit the LST2 driveshafts for 14mm wheels I noticed too, which opens up more tire/wheel combo options.

The lst xxl2e is the best monster truck I have seen and I'm still enjoying this one so it'll be around for a while. So far parts I have broken or replaced on it front drive shafts, front wheel, body posts, steering link ends.

Finally found a set of the jumbos on ebay so i got em,

I like the look they give being so wide, but they are not as tall as the xxl tires, they are 14mm hexes so ill see how they hold up, I run 6s only

Nice. Make sure you have those wheel nuts tight to help keep them from stripping. I stripped the 14mm hex on a 4s aftershock conversion in a couple minutes. Glued the hex into the wheel and then spun the drive pin inside the hex. If you end up having similar luck Ofna does have 17mm Monster Pirate, Dominator and Titan wheels in the same full offset you have now.

XXL2e over a triple on a 10 scale buggy track. Double and speed pass.

i used metal hexes and i also grooved the face of them with a dremel to give them extra grip to the rim. so far only ran once with no problems.

A metal hex will help if you have the right ones. I tried a set I had lying around that the drive pin didn't fit snugly enough (I want to say they were for the a Savage) and the hex just shattered. They were my preventative measure against stripping but since they just shattered I had to go back to plastic and after they failed I went LST2 spec on the suspension with 17mm hex. Hope you have better luck!

I just put a set of Trencher X's on my LST and they up the grip by a ton.

I have a set of ATX stock tires, Big Joes, and a set of Mashers. The latter two hook up super good off road, but the Big Joes not quite as well on asphalt. All three work well all around, but the softer compound tires wear faster. All of the tires I run on my LST2s are all 40-series. I have 20mm hubs on one truck and 23mm hubs on the other, but I'll be switching the 23mm out for 20mm hubs. I only have one set of wheels for the 23mm hubs.

Does anyone use 23mm hubs these days? Seems like the 1/8th scale MTs are about as common as pan cars...

Its a friends track that I helped build for 10 scale buggies. The truck is kinda chuncky on it.

Maj_Overdrive is no longer a member of this forum. He left frustrated and disillusioned with the board and the hobby, intent on doing bigger vehicle projects in his garage. It is rumored he was consumed or willingly melded with whatever he was working on and a mechanical overlord was born. Unable to access his old account, but still receiving pm's and spam from this site his rage only grows and Maj_Overdrive wasn't known for being cute and cuddley to begin with. He was always willing to help out but not with stuff easily answered by a simple search. Do yourself a favor, use google, the search function, whatever. Just don't disturb Maj_Overdrive or he might just come back and start making long posts explaining how everything in the universe works without regard to your feelings.

Btw. The part number is LOSA3533 and I found them by simply using google and the search term "Losi 8ight 1/2 17mm hex". You only need 1/2" extended hex if you're using standard offset wheels. If you're going to use 1/2" offset wheels standard 17mm hex (Losi has a kit with shims) will equal the width of stock.

Did you ever find wheels? I have the Aftershock and the stock axles are 5mm and the stock wheels use 14mm hexes. I'm having a really hard time finding something compatible.

I need some 14mm hexes, too. What make/model wheels are these?
