thank for the input Simon. Yea after much reading and debate here regarding motor choice it seems like the 1.60 is a good bet. I know your situation is a bit different across the pond, availability, price factors are a bit different im sure. I plan on the 18x8 or 18x6. Im a pretty aggressive flyer and like to take it for a wild ride when I go up so that prop should allow some attempts at hovering as well.

ROGER- I got the decals, it is much appreciated friend!! They look sharp!

If you put on an APC 17x6 you should be able to hang it.
Can't find one, let me know. I think I have a few.

after reading RJ's response it looks like I will stick to the 1.60fx. I really want to try to hang it on the prop but I guess that will have to wait

As an alternative to the the APCs, both the TopFLite Pro and Zinger 18x6/10 work great. Vertical is about 30mph...hover is about 2/3 stick at 12.5 pound. I tried a Master Airscrew 18x6 Classic and it sucked. Poor speed and no vertical.
The advice about throws is good, I recent rekitted my Giles during a touch and go. Only thing I can figure is I must have had high rates on elevator(I use hi rates during taxing to prevent nose overs- might have forgot to switch off) . Any way, it appeared to snap into the ground. This is odd in that I am very gentle and and had no reason to horse it back and noticed with the high exponential I used it was not much more sensitive that low rates around neutral. So the only thing I am sure of is the Giles is not very forgiving.
I just maidened a Texas Hurricane with the OS160 and all I can say is its not as pretty as the Giles but man it flys 10 times better.

I also tried this prop. Lots of noise and not enough thrust.

Planes with non-tapered wings are like that.

ok gents, here is an update for me:

got my engine and the engine mount, waiting for the pitts muffler to show up this week at my lhs.

also its my big week to get my servos, the lhs is gonna work me a deal so I will have some choices, here is my dilemma, im not sue what to get!!!!

I have looked hard at high torque servo's but am not sure if its gonna be overkill

    Hitec 5625mg's for elevator
    Hitec 5645mg for rudder
    Hitec 625's for Ailerons

are these suggested or should I go a different route?

    any input is appreciated

    matt

Digitals are a good idea on the elevator of this plane - you have to run *really* small throws, so servos that have lots of power and center accurately are a plus. They aren't really necessary on the rest of the surfaces.

That being said, I used 5645s on my ailerons, 5625s on my elevators and a 5945 on my rudder. Overkill, but I had 'em on hand already.

Glad to see this thread is still alive. My 202 is finally VERY near completion. All that is left is to add some tail weight and check the consuption rate of my motor. I'm using the stock tank, but I've got a BME 50 hanging up front, so Im not sure if I need to go slightly bigger. Has around 23-24 lbs pull (tied to fish scale on the ground) swinging a 22X8 prop. I know it's a little over kill, but what the heck. I'll DEFINITELY post pic's of her before I fly it, so everyone can see how the motor fits and all that good stuff.

Can I ask all of you what size battery you all use for your Giles? Im not sure how much these larger servos draw and what typical battery consumption is.

    Id appreciate the info

I'm running (2) 1100 mAH NiMH. 1 for the ign and 1 for the radio gear.

    Thunderhead,

Be sure to mount those two battery packs in the tail of your G202, that way you'll only have to add another pound of lead back there to balance that 50 cc gasser on the nose. Be sure you take those pictures before you fly it.

I used a 4-cell 1800 mAh nicad pack. I attached it to the rear-end of the canopy area (for balancing)

A 1400 mAh pack is fine for this application *if* you mount it in the tail. I didn't want to do any extra cutting, hence the bigger battery.

hey Thead, Instead of adding tail weight, I would make a hatch in the tail just forward of where the servos are in the tail and put my receiver and battery pack back there. You will move your three extensions for the elevators and rudder to the ailerons and throttle. You also will probably not need tail weight.

    Hi Matt,

Glad you got the decals. Can't wait to see your finished product. Matt, for the 160 a 1100 Mah NICD is what I used. I get plenty of flying time with this. The first picture show the Rx mounted behind a 20 oz. Dubros tank and the second picture shows the battery mounted under the cockpit. The balance is perfect with three servos in the tail. Didn't have to add any weight.

Thunderhead - A BME 50 on a G.P. Giles 202? Good luck my firend. I hope you did the wing and fuse mods. Seriously, you may know much more than I do about this airplane. I am on my Third Giles. Love the airplane, but with all that has been written about wing failures and fuse cracks forward and aft of the wing saddle I would be mindful of throttle management. This bird is going to be heavy and hot. Obviously, it's your call. Have any pictures showing how you reinforced the firewall to hold
