I have been using Windex to clean the plane, covered with monokote, but am noticing that there is still a thin film of fuel left.

How do I get it off ?

How do you clean your plane ?

I've been using denatured alcohol in a spray bottle and it takes off the grime and leaves a squeaky clean surface. I also spray the engine after the last run of the day and after it has totally cooled off. It keeps the stains from setting in. You can get it in a half gallon can at Home Depot or Lowes. These places also sell the heavy duty spray bottles. The one I bought was meant to spray WD-40, so I figure it should handle some alcohol ok.

I've only ever used Windex as well. Yeah, it seems to leave a slightly hazy film but a bit of a buff with a final paper towel seems to remove it.

Now, if you went electric, you won't have to clean your plane and all the oil drippings !

I use glass cleaner with about 20% alcohol added. I fly diesels as well, so I know how to clean up a mess.

The whole trick is.......

If you spray on any cleaner and rub it with a paper towel, you are just moving the goop around. Oil floats on water!!! So, spray on the cleaner and with a nice soft small paint brush, work away at loosing the oil and get it to the surface, then use a paper towel. Try it, it works and produces a squeeky clean finish on Monokote, no film at all.

I also go over the finish occassionally with "Neverdull", but any auto polish should work.

I use Glass Plus, like windex but no ammonia. It usually takes two sprays and wipe downs but the monokote is clean.

The oily clean up it well worth the effort, plus you get that smell of burned castor oil!

Thanks Lynn for the Glass Plus note. I'd read about it and wanted to try some, but couldn't remember the name! Sure sign of getting to be an ole geezer huh? I wrote it down this time. A friend and I have been using some 3m rags called Scotch-Brite. We got them last year at Wally World, in the Housewares department. But on 3m's web site I found them listed under items for Auto Detailer's use. They do a great job on grease and will wipe down an oily plane leaving no residue, and dry too. After a bit they get oily, but we just throw them in the washer and when dry put them back in the flight box. Beats carrying that extra bottle of spray and that roll of paper towels. They are maybe 8"X8." I got one to put in each of our camera cases to wipe lenses as they pick up and remove dust and lint just fine, and will not scratch. I just make sure that only the yellow ones are used on the cameras and the blues are for the airplanes! Once a month my planes get a good cleaning, and that's where I want to use the Glass Plus. Try the Scotch-Brite wipes, you might like 'em. End of commercial.
