I was just going to tighten the screws till I hear a crack and then back them off a 1/4 turn. Just kidding you are correct but I didn't want to glue more stuff in there until I got the holes lined up into the blocks. It will eventually get a scab of wood to keep it from tipping. The balance will be a challenge but I think it is doable. If it becomes unrealistic I will concede and mount the turbine in the traditional location and use one of Vladimirs thrust tubes. ( Does anyone know where to get a full body 1/4 scale solid brass pilot?) I would like to hear more theory about the different C.G. locations and incidences for ducted fan vs. turbine power. Thanks.............. I taped off the engine hatch and squished some body filler in the gap. Initially it looks pretty ugly but with some sanding it cleans up good. While I had the stuff mixed I filled in the aileron tips. I will fill in the top hatch the same way but it will happen in 3 or 4 sessions. Even though the tape is smooth and shiny the filler sticks pretty go to it initially.

I'm sure you'll get the CG correct no matter what it takes. Does Vladimir make thrust tubes for others or just for you guys? The reason I'm asking is this, I'm scratch building a 1/6th scale FJ-1 Fury and I need a thrust tube. It has a 70" fuse and the tube will be around 30" long. Don't know if you have ever heard of this jet before, but it was the first jet the Navy had in squadron service and the first to land and take off a carrier. Where we fly, I need straight wing jets. Not much room for swepback wing or delta jets......

We have not made any pipes yet. Vladimir has made a spot welder and the tests have been good, but we have not purchased any stock to make a full sized thrust tube.

If you check post #191 you will see the welder and some spot welds.

Status: offline 		I put tape down on the hatch and did the first squish of bondo into the top hatch line. I did about 1/4 of the hatch. I'll let it sit for a while since the pinkish bondo seems to set up slower than the blue icing I used on the engine hatch. After it squished out I scraped as much as I could off so there would be less to sand. With both those products you need to work fast. I don't think I would have been able to do the whole hatch in one shot. In a few minutes the bondo is not necessarily hard but it becomes too stiff to work with.

Status: offline 		We did a little work on my Panther last night, Joe and I added a piece of 1/8" balsa from the rear of the hatch to the cockpit area to stiffen the hatch from twisting, then we added the rear pins in the hatch to hold it to the fuselage. I still have to decide how I want to lock the front of the hatch down.

We were thinking about the ailerons, I am building an F9F-2 model, here are some photos of the aileron tips from Pensacola:

Status: offline 		I Filled a second segment of the hatch line. The hatch put up a fight coming off so he last few applications will get a sandwich wrap barrier. The first application as you can see didn't fill the whole flange so I may go back and apply more to pretty it up. That will give that "coffin lid" of a hatch a nice surface to sit on.

Yea, I have that problem too. Its strange because you see the car guys on shows like "West Coast Customs" squeegeeing it out on car fenders and stuff and they don't seem to have that problem. Probably because they mix it more correctly. My problem is that I always put in too much hardener, but the only thing messier than stuff that hardens too quickly is some that doesn't harden at all.

I need to get some pictures of my 80" ws Ziroli Panther that is now ready to fly (in primer). I'm hoping to get it out this weekend...

Status: offline 		I give you an amen on the bondo. Post A bunch of pix of your Panther up here. It would be great to see how different people build their Panthers. Good luck with your test flight..............I was unhappy with how flexible my hatch was. So to stiffen it I did the same thing to my hatch as we did to Johns. My problem was that I had already started filling the hatch line with bondo. So the slightest twist while I was stiffening it and all that work would have been ruined. But it came out good.

Status: offline 		I went with sandwich wrap as a barrier for the next bondo squish. The clear tape was sticking too well and my leverage to pry the hatch up is becoming less the closer I get to the front. The intake plugs are all waxed and will soon be ready to lay up some intakes. Once I have the intake ducts in I can finish the leading edges of the intake. Then it is prime, set the stab, prime again, canopy work, paint, and install...............then fly?

Status: offline 		John A. stopped by to pick up his resin and some glass cloth. He is going to start glassing his wings at home. I shot some PVA on my intake plugs. I'm always worried about not putting enough on and the parts sticking to the mold. The other thing is putting the PVA on and keeping it glossy. too dry and misty and it has a flat finish, too wet and it beads up. After it dried I shot some primer on them so the ducts won't be translucent fiberglass looking when they come off. I couldn't waste the bondo I had mixed up on the last squish so I laid some down around the front of the hatch without a barrier down.

Status: offline 		I went over to John Abrahamians house this afternoon and brought a few things to work on. The front yard was a big wing holder. just push them in anywhere and they would stay. Actually I brought my wings to work on getting some of the deeper scratches out of them. I also brought Mr. Roths hoz. stab to ice a few lumpy spots. while the icing was mixed I smeared a little more on my aileron tips. Mr Fun worked on capping his wings and installing the servo pockets. When he finished that He took me down the street for some BBQ. After dinner we cut some glass cloth and glassed the top of his wings. Once the glass and resin was down he rubbed down polyester sheets over them. After the resin cures you just grab a corner of the sheet and it peels off leaving a near finished surface. He used this technique on his stab and it worked really well.

Status: offline 		I did the final squish of bondo under the nose of my hatch after work today. I used sandwich wrap for the barrier again and it worked fine. The hatch goes on and comes off pretty easy with a good fit. Next there are a few spots on the surface around the hatch line that can use just a little icing.

Status: offline 		I wet sanded the rest of the icing on Mr Roths stab. It Is now ready to get some primer slopped on to it. I also laid up some intakes on the plugs. To help get them off the plugs I laid a kevlar thread down the length of the intake. Hopefully when they cure I will be able to pull the thread and cut the intake open so I can get them off the plug. That technique is a total experiment.The hold down block in the front of the hatch never had any glass put over it so I laid some on it. With the rest of the resin I fuel proofed the bay that the over flow line will run through.

Status: offline 		The kevlar strip string did not work exactly as planned, but I was able to get the intakes off the plugs with out cutting into the plugs. I scored the glass with an xacto and I got it to split. I coaxed the rest off with a balsa stick. The balsa stick kept from scratching the plug.

Status: offline 		I put the intakes back around the plugs and scuffed them up with some 80 grit. I masking taped the seam back together on the inside and laid some glass along it on the outside. I also wrapped some glass around the front, middle and rear of the intake. to stiffen it. I also laid some on the flat areas because they were a little oil canny. When the resin cures they should be nice and stiff. I got my boomerang ready for the season. It has the king tech 170 in it that will go in the Panther. With this motor the boomerang is over powered by double.

Status: offline 		I took the masking tape off and it looks like the seam keyed back together very nice. I trimmed the glass off the intakes and knocked everything down again with some 80 grit. I then washed them in some warm water to remove the PVA mold release. After a drip dry I fitted them into the fuse. a little sanding and trimming and they went right in. the last picture is what the engine will see.

Status: offline 		I swung by John Abrahamians house this evening and he was already sanding the primer on his wing. Since my last visit there he glassed the bottoms using the same technique as he used on the top. The polyester came off leaving a surface ready for primer. He then brushed on a coat of primer. He had it in the car all day today so it cured pretty good and when sanding made some nice dust.......................... John Roth you better get crackin on your panther. Mr Fun is going to pass us both.

Status: offline 		I sanded down the inside seam (post 268 pic. one) and smeared a little icing on it. I took that down with some 120 and shot it with Gray Krylon primer. The same stuff I painted the plugs with before I glassed them. It looks pretty good. While The icing was mixed up I started to fill a little dip at the front of the hatch. I also worked on the fuse. to get a smooth fit where the intake meets the splitter plate.

Status: offline 		Just playing with some icing. I was going to brush some primer today but there was a chance of rain. So I messed around with the seam of the nose. Remember we want that nose being the best looking part of the plane. I also removed all the material, down to the glass on the fuse, of the splitter plate where the intake will mate. that will give that edge something solid to glue to. I also finished up the top hatch seam.

Status: offline 		I dragged out the Panther to prime the top. I also primed my intakes, the top hatch, and John Roth's hoz. stab. I was just planning on doing the top but you always mix too much or not enough. I wound up mixing too much so I flipped the fuse over quick to get rid of the extra primer and wound up priming the whole fuse. I can now install the intakes and finish the work at their leading edge. The top hatch still needs some work where the instrument panel will go. But the hatch is a separate unit and won't slow down the rest of the fuse work. I know Mr Fun is priming and installing tip tanks but is being secretive. Post some pix. John........................... Sorry pix. won't upload right now.

Status: offline 		Mr Fun came over yesterday to see if his tip tanks look correct. He attached them to the wing and did not have his fuse at home to see how they look. John plugged the wings in and stared at it for a half an hour and thinks one tank is tipped up one micron. As far as I am concerned I think they look pretty straight. While he was over he trimmed the rest of the cloth off the fuse and blocked it down.
