Great looking builds you guys have going there for sure. I used to fly over at 107th some years back...but moved out to Joliet and fly mostly at meets now. Wondered if you ever got the pictures you sought of the plane from Pensacola museum? If you won't need them right away, I am going to the museum at the end of June and would be glad to get as many pics as needed for you. Will make my way over to the Palos field after you get these things airborne and check them out. You, and the rest of the crew there were always guys whose planes I admired....and thanks to John A. for maidening my old Pica FW190.

Status: offline 		Hey Jeff from the prior post. We went the built up way because we all have some scratch building experience. Only a few of us have mold making experience, and the mold making process is expensive and labor intensive. Then someone needs to store the mold. Once you've built one up another one could be built in less time because you understand how the model goes together. This is true for any project............... I finished glassing the top of the fuse. hoz. stab and control surfaces. I also glassed where the hatch separates to harden the area up on the fuse. and hatch. The tools I used to apply the glass and resin are pretty simple. The one tool that is home made is the roller. It is just a 1/4 -20 bolt bent to hold a 1" wide mini roller. The tape and stick on the handle were put on so I could grip it once my gloves were covered in resin. The roller was cut from a larger roller I bought a Menards. If you try applying resin this way make sure it is very slow cure. Otherwise the roller once loaded up with resin will harden pretty fast. Also make sure you have plenty to glass because it takes about an oz. of resin just to load up the foam roller. The roller makes applying resin on vertical surfaces easier and it doesn't drip all over the floor, at least not as much. Extra resin can be removed with the playing card. I now have the fuse flipped over for more body work, wheel wells, and more shaping of the tail cone. Then more glass.

Status: offline 		Well here is a wheel well and back filling picture tutorial. I worked off a center support I installed a long time ago between the load bearing bulkheads to keep them from laying down and folding in a high g maneuver. Then I made the outboard section of the wheel well to get it to fit between the retract mechanism and the tire. There was only 1/2" between the two and it had to clear them both. Then it was notched to clear the strut. The other thing to be careful of is to not make the wheel wells too deep because the intakes run right above them, and I would hate to not be able to use my nice Mr. Fun-co custom intakes.

Status: offline 		They are Robart B-25 gear that I had cut down the mains for another project. They wound up fitting in the Panther but they will not lock in the up position because they do not retract all the way , to clear the intakes. I will rely on no leaks and a lot of air pressure to hold them up. Then if they pull out in a high G maneuver I know I am losing air pressure. Thats an automatic air pressure gauge without any extra hardware and it has telemetry. A few of the other Panthers in the build will have Likes Line electric retracts and they will be able to stop them at any angle. Here is a Pic. with both wells installed. The wheels are 5"wheels.

your project is looking good! BTW while visiting the TopGun event I stopped and snapped about 100 pictures of the -5 panther at the spacecoast museum.
These helped clarified alot of our questions! More to follow.

Status: offline 		Hey Paul thanks for your effort. I'm sure the guys will welcome any info you have. For a modern Jet, flying specimens of a Panther are about as rare as you can get. I think there is one left flying somewhere......................Mr. Fun came over with Dennis last night and both of them tired of sheeting decided to put some glass cloth on the top of Johns fuse where possible. I told John his stuff has got to go soon because in summer the basement and back yard gets taken over by kids. So he has a Ziroli Stuka down there that needs about an hour of work to get flying again and a Panther fuse. that will need a new home for the summer. I told John next session we are finishing his Stuka because that is what we were working on before Vladimir Manipulated our weak minds with all this 1/4 scale Panther nonsense.

Status: offline 		Things for me have slowed down with the flying season here. I back filled in around the nose gear and cut the glass cloth for the bottom of the plane. The glass on the bottom is 3.2 oz. crows weave. I figured I would go a little heavier on the bottom since that is what it will be landing on when the gear don't come down. I have been buying my glass cloth from Thayercraft on the east coast. He has some great prices on large quantities..................... One of my building table has turned into an airport complete with terminal and A-380 parking.............We finished Mr. Funs Ziroli Stuka and he flew it at the Palos rc air show last week and he said it flew great with the G62 in it.

Status: offline 		I got some motivation and glassed the bottom of my fuse. I had a photo assistant snap a few pix of me at work. I also put a second coat of resin on the other stuff I had already glassed. The rudders and elevators are hanging because I did both sides at once. It's no big deal to do both sides at once with a roller and a set of gloves. Mr. Fun cut Mr. Roth the top for his vertical stab out of pink foam. So while I had the resin mixed up I threw it in the vacuum bag. I put a few T pins through the sheeting and into the foam so the sheeting wouldn't shift while I was putting it into the bag.

Status: offline 		With the bottom glassed I was able to cut out the hatch where the engine will go. I am mounting the engine in the very rear of the plane and I am not using a thrust tube. I will take the weight penalty but will be getting a weight credit for no thrust tube. The higher thrust engines are also getting lighter so I think balancing will not be a big issue. The blue and red colors are the ad print on the clementine box I used to make my sub formers for the hatch. The wood the box was made from was so nice I had to use it for something.

Status: offline 		I'm not sure I would go that way. If you move the engine up forward as far as you can go, you can essentially get it over the CG. Back there, you are going to need as least as much nose weight as the engine itself, if not more. That's going to far out weight the pipe.

At the size of this plane, weight isn't going to be much of an issue. A bigger issue for me though is that having the engine buried under the airplane with no access during starting is a bit dicey...

Status: offline 		The engine can't go on the c.g. the fuel tank and intake ducting are there. But I still think I'll be ok with balancing. We will all know soon enough. As far as the engine being buried it really won't be. It will just be up side down. In starting you really only need access for cooling air and or a fire extinguisher. you don't put your hands on the engine to start it. The top and bottom hatches will provide plenty of access for air and an extinguisher if need be. I welcome all advice and criticism and will weigh it against my own ideas. Thanks Bob. Status: offline 		I didn't want to put this fairing block between the rudders on until I absolutely had to in fear of it getting knocked off. well now's the time. It is just a piece of the rudder that I cut off when I foam cored the rudders. A little epoxy, a rubber band, a little aligning, and a little light filler and it is on. Next time I am doing glass it will get glassed on.

Status: offline 		After glassing the bottom I flipped it back on its wheels and busted the crutch out. Then I cut out the bulk head where the intakes will run. Unfortunately the intake engineers didn't talk to the wing mount engineers and they both used some of the same space. Hopefully with some adjusting we can make everything work................John Roth and I took a ride out to Winamac last week to their jet rally and as I was walking past one of the trash cans someone had discarded 2 nice 2 1/2 gallon kerosene bottles. I told John they look like they would fit in the Panther, so he said grab them both. Well they fit right in and don't look at all over sized for the size of the plane. I won't maiden it with that size tank but if the plane behaves and acts like it would carry it that would give a 20 minute flight time.

Status: offline 		I wanted to fly the shuttle at the Palos rc scale show Sunday so some much needed space shuttle maintenance left me with some extra resin so I glassed on the rudder fairing. West System resin cures pretty fast in the hot sun.

The engine for the Panther came the other day, a King Tech 170. I dealt with Barry from King Tech USA. He gave me a good deal. John Roth has been flying one in his Boomerang for a while now and it has worked perfectly. With 37# of thrust it accelerates the Boomerang in the vertical. I will put it in my boomer to get familiar with it and then put it in the Panther when it is ready. It fits pretty good in the back of the plane with a pretty good range to slide it front to back. Vladimir thinks it should go forward with a small ring at the exhaust to create a high velocity low pressure zone to draw cooling air over the engine I tend to agree.

Status: offline 		I am putting one more layer of glass on the keel to strengthen the fuse and fill in the crows foot glass weave. And one more layer on the rear hatch cover to finish it. I also started laying out some servo locations in the wing. The nice thing about foam cores is that you can put the servo pockets where you want. I just need to work around the aluminum wing plug ins.

Status: offline 		Spreading more epoxy and fiberglass. These areas need another coat of resin to fill the weave and then the finishing can start. Also the hatches can start to be fitted. It is just a slow go this time of the year

Status: offline 		The part finished planes in the corner aren't mine. The SBD is a club members that was left at my house when the owner ran out of gas as far as building goes. The Texan I pulled out of the garbage at the field and rebuilt the front end to give it some dignity while I had my own Texan that needed some work. But the Hostetler 172 is mine and was what I was working on when I got talked into building a giant Panther. I will finish my Panther, and the 172. My conservative guess is summer or fall of 2012. As soon as I do anything significant I will post some pix. You know there are 4 other Planes being built and everyone is at a dead stop. Glue some sticks together and post some pix. people.
