Just my impression for what it's worth.  I had been flying the classic flash with crow and really liked it, it was my favorite airplane.

I upgraded the wing to the Ultra-Flash and set it up per Factory.  It flew great but I had issues with landing.  Perhaps I was carrying too much speed over the threshold but I was doing a lot of bouncing and pilot induced oscillations.

I reduced the flap setting and added 6mm of crow and it really seemed to smooth out the landings.  I also like to land slightly nose up into alpha to get the speed down and it felt more stable.  ... Just my personal observation.

Agree completely. I have gone to the crow setup and I REALLY like it. Plus it give the airplane a more "normal" pitch attitude. Didn't feel like I was "dragging" it in as much.

With normal Flap you can set the pitch attitude using the elevator to flap mix you need. I always set my models so they are fractionally nose down on full flap...

Hi Guys,

I just ordered my UF. This is my second Flash. First was the regular flash which I flew for several years.

I had a JC 120se in it.

I am going to put a 100 size engine in this one.

I am wondering how long a flight time I can expect with the standard fuse tank only using a 100 size engine.

Thinking of using the wing tank for smoke.

Thanks,

Stan

Not loing enough! You will need the extra fuel. With a P-100 you are on the power longer, so 7-8 mins with the wing tank

Get the saddle tanks if you can and use wing tank for smoke. Depending on your flying style a smaller turbine may use the same amount as the 120. I have a 170 in mine and fly at about 3/4 throttle most of the time. The extra $ for the saddle tanks is cheap insurance and they are a near perfect fit. I installed the saddle tanks and the full bypass at the same time. Nice and tidy in there now and it seems to use less fuel with the full bypass. 7-8 minute flight times with the 170.

Has anyone found the saddle tanks to being prone to cracking / leaking ? The ones I had ( used for smoke) needed to be reinforced a bit.

Dave

I am interested in getting some additional feedback from whoever who is actually flying the flash with the 100 size turbines.

If I have to carry the extra fuel then I would be defeating my purpose of keeping the airplane much lighter with less residual thrust.

I might as well move up to the next size turbine, 140 size

Hi Stan

I have been flying my P100 powered UFlash this season and found that from start up to shut down with a 7 minute flight I am going through very consistantly 2 litres of fuel. I use the entire wing tank and about .6 litre from the main. My flying style involves throttle management not wide open the entire flight.

Cheers

I always get 7-8 mins regardless of throttle use with a 140, fuel left on landing varies between a couple of go arounds to 50% full fuz tank. This is using the saddles + fuz tank. Wing tank is used for smoke.

Hi Dean,

Thank you for your information just what I have been looking for.

Are you happy with the power your 100 gives you or knowing what you know now would you have gone for the next size engine up.

I will be putting smoke in mine so perhaps more power to haul around the extra weight would be the way to go. If I am burning the same amount of fuel what is the real advantage to a smaller engine other then residual thrust and a little less weight.

Stan

i flew mine on 120sx..my opinion that was the perfect match at 30lbs....pretty fast 1:1... nice on fuel...typical 8minutes flghts with plenty to go around...they will fly on any 18lb or up turbine....its just the question how good...if you want a unlimited verticle more dynamic airplane go with the 30 to 34 lb engine.. i havent seen one flown on a 100,but with 23 lbs that will fly it but nothing like the bigger engines....

You'd be surprised, there's only about a 40mph top end difference in the speed of my CF with a Rabbit 100 (22lbs) vs when I pop in my Cheetah (31lbs). Like a car or motorcycle, once it hits a certain speed, it takes a tremendous increase in power to get a small increase in speed. I personally like the feel of the lighter airplane.

I have about 10 flights on my now UF with a P100 and I went only with the main tank to save weight. The trouble is it only gets
5 Min's flight time, Couple of times I have run out on landing approach or while taxiing back to the pits. My first UF had a 120sx
and was getting 8 Min's flight time with the wing tank. Just ordered the wing tank to go into the P100 UF.

My P100 Uflash takes off with authority. It easily gets on step and cruises comfortably at 1/2 throttle. Wide open she really moves and pulling vertical rolls is no problem. I can get it quite high to the point where I bail out before the aircraft does. I like the overall cleanliness of the internal design, simplicity and light feel on the sticks. Landings are very easily controlled and at a crawl as I don't have to contend with high residual thrust. I am very happy and will not put in a bigger powerplant as I consider the overall package nicley balanced. The airframe can easily carry the extra 3 lbs of smoke if you decide to go that route with a 100 series engine.

Cheers
Dean W.

Aren't P-100's running $2600? Why not get a K-140F for $2450.00. You save a $150 and get around 50% more thrust. If you want to save gas you can still dial the engine back. Either way if you want to do 180 mph the fuel burn will only be slightly more on the 140 due to the increased mass of the turbine. But it's nice to have the punch when you need it. And if you want to coast pull the throttle back.

The K140g is now selling at a special of aprox 2250$. See rcu classifieds ads
I think modelbau is selling them until dec 31 at the special rate
A steal for the 140
As the weigh loss is not as significant between the 2 I went with the 140

I have a Merlin 100 in my Classic Flash, after having a heavy 160 in the airframe for around 30 flights, putting the 100 back in was the easiest decision Ive ever made, Im pretty sure the UF would be great with the 100, the Classic to me still feels like it could do with a little bit more on the vertcials, not slow by any stretch but a Merlin / Kingtech / JetCat 140 would be perfect. I use the Fuselage and Wing Tank and will often come back after 7 - 8 mins with 1.5" in the Main Tank, our UF has the identical fuel consumption as Rob's, 8 mins at ease and always comes back with plenty spare, even after a more throttle happy flight If I were looking to buy an UF, Id want a 140 size engine, just for that little bit extra when you want it / need it.

Now thats nice!
Just been out today testing the new team UF. Decided to break with the norm and fit a Jet cat P-100 in this one. Very light weight feel to it in the air, and super easy to land. Not my cup of tea, but a great package for some one wanting a nice easy sport jet. Think I might give this one to Stevo to fly!
Regards Al
