Spray, masked off the opening and fuse/duct V from the wing opening.

The wood trays will be painted probably a grey colour like my P120SX UF, the cockpit is a special grey primer/filler as it fills the weave in one coat and the model (as seen in previous posts) does not hurt from a little extra nose weight. The fuse wood work was sealed with ZAP 40 rubbed down with BVM scuff boards.

The install on my update kit is almost complete. I did notice some rib lines on the top of the wing. Has Anyone elses wing had this?

Status: offline 		+1 on the rib lines; not a problem. However, today I discovered that both elevators and the left flap have delamination forward of the hingeline. The delamination is more than 1/4 inch into the elevator forward of the hingeline on the elevators and the left flap delamination is extreme. I will get pics posted in the next couple days, but right now my UF is unflyable. My UF has 12 flights on it with a P-120 and I don't fly it hard. I recommend everyone check their horizontal stabs and flaps for delams.

thanks for the heads up .. would it be possibly for you to post some pics up of this ? I'm curious to where the weak area is and how we can reinforce this before problems can start .. I'll be on the lookout for this when i get my UF back from the painter ...

Status: offline 		Had this happen on the flap on my Classic Flash about 75 flights in. Mine was from a gear up landing. Delamination was about 1 inch into the flap and went pretty much the full width. Worrying about the fix was lots more of a problem than the actual fix. Fix was to use some thin ZAP laminating resin to re-bond the skins. I put some vasoline in the hinge line to keep any stray resin out. Clamped with mild pressure and let set. CA would probably work fine also.

That was 50 flights ago and I have seen no additional problems. Good luck with your repair.

How do you store/transport the model? Only time I've seen in is where the control horns rest on some thing. I transport with the tail on, usually in a van, I place foam under the fuselage chine to lift the tail up. On the wing I transport with them vertical and avoid them leaning on something with the horns. My original Flash (hundreds and hundreds of flights) has never shown a problem other on the tail where I lost a leg and ground the tip off one control horn. The elevator started to de lam later.

My storage and transport are almost identical. The rear of the airframe is supported at the rear of the wing saddle, just under the P-120 and the front is supported just aft of the nosegear. There is no weight or pressure on the elevator control horns or flap horn.
For all, I took some pics yesterday evening, don't know how well they came out yet, but if they are okay I will get them posted when I get home this evening.

Status: offline 		The three pictures are of the top of the horizontal stabs and elevators. I can't get to the wing right now, but the left flap is worse than the elevators. Not sure if that will show up in a picture. I will email these to Larry Tudor (C-ARF rep) also. So, I guess the consensus is to put thin, flexible CA into the delaminated area?

Looking at the pictures they are all classic signs of the surface being forced up, normally by the horn as they are in that area. I really cannot see this happing in flight, the design is the same as the classic Flash and there are way over a thousand flying, its also the hinge/foam method used on many other CARF models and it does not happen without the surface being lifted/shocked.
It looks like the hinge has started to tear at the root? be careful if it has, once the material starts to tear it can develop.
Personally I would use skinning epoxy like ZAP 40, thin CA is not a gap filler and if the foam has torn there is a lot of air to fill in on the bond.

Thanks. Tonight I will closely inspect the bottom of the control horns to see if there is evidence that they were impacted from a hard landing (don't think so, but...) or show rub signs from transport. I did haul the UF in a trailer to Phoenix, AZ for Speedworld, which is over 800 miles. The airframe for that trip was sitting on a foam pad, so should have been okay. But, I will check tonight and let everyone know if there is something obvious.

Status: offline 		The fuselage was sitting on about 2 inches of foam. So, whatever the lowest point of the aft part of the airframe (control horns or that little rib that extends down from the center bottom of the fuselage?) would have been sitting on the foam and supporting the airframe. In my SUV for to and from the field here in Colorado, the airframe is supported under the nose aft of the nose gear and under the airframe at the furthest aft part of the wing saddle.

If the foam went under the tail then it will rack side to side onto the horns. My foam stops short of the servo arms in the tailplane.

Well, I don't think there is any doubt that the control horns would have been touching the foam on that trip. I'll also check for damage to the horns from contact with the runway or whatever. Thanks.
You mentioned the ZAP finishing resin instead of CA. Would you recommend I thin the resin with alcohol to get it to go into the space between the foam and skin?

No, just warm it lightly with a heat gun just before you are ready to brush it in. You need a very small amount. If you thin it you will get too little adhesive to bond the surfaces.
Grease the hinge line with a heavy silicon grease and hold the tail on edge as you brush it onto the open edge, keep closing it up, to check the quantity of epoxy as too much will go everywhere!

Status: offline 		Wick thin CA into the affected area then follow up with medium (green) CA. Had to do it on my flaps and stab on my classic flash 3yrs ago. Hasn't been touched since.

Status: offline 		Well, looks I have to eat this one. I checked the control horns and one of the two horns on each elevator had a flat spot. I had an ugly landing in Phoenix in April and suspect that the control horn impact and delamination happened at that time. Anyway, I'm pretty sure this is on me and not a problem in the construction of my airplane. I got the horizontal stab delams fixed this evening, will take on the flap tomorrow if I have time.

Status: offline 		Just did wt and bal of cf to UF conversion. Had to move turbine batt from nose to between intakes. Cg had to move an 1.5 inch from cf bal point.

Status: offline 		im stuck between stuffing a 36lbs Rhino in the flash, or saving it for a future project and using a P120 ... for those that have flown with 36lbs power ... how much more push is it really on this airframe ? ( pulling out of slow flight, verticals, etc ... , top speed is not an issue )
