I'll echo the suggestion of resoldering all bullet connectors, both on the ESC and the motor side.

Get them molten and then hold it absolutely still, holding the wire with pliers since our pain threshold is exactly one second shorter than it takes the solder joint to cool.

Castle's LVC, when in soft cutoff mode, is a slow pulsing, like one per second. A fast stutter is either a bad bullet joint or motor damage. Hope for a bad solder joint ;-)

arcticflyer,

You were given some great suggestions.

If you also have a data logger, set it to 10 samples per second and see if it shows anything.

As a reminder: Keep all motor tests to 3 seconds max ( I aim for 2 ½ seconds).

Motors heat up during static tests....specially at higher power levels.

Do not run motor again till it has cooled off well.....might want to use a ziplock bag of ice to cool the motor down quicker before running the motor again.

Thanks guys....removed the choke point...don't know why I made those extensions with that smaller wire anyway.

First I rewired the batt so the leads come out from the center of the battery instead of the side ...then shortened the leads and went with straight 6mm bullets...all the joints look and feel OK.

Then I got to wondering...the choke point is probably the meter (Eflite)... I don't even know what it's rated for.....and it only has #13 leads (all my other wire is #10).

Tomorrow I need to get some more shrink tubing and I can do some more tests.

I'd like to be at about 100 to 105 amps at WOT so I might have to find a 6X3 at the LHS tomorrow. Man I love this stuff!!!

Oh yeah...timing was on low so I bumped it up to MED which is 5 degrees.

Man Murd I hope it ain't motor damage I just got this thing back from MEGA with a fresh rewind

Timing now set at 7.

I would NOT go much higher as heat will increase in the motor............I have played with the timing on some motors.............you can dail Up the timing to increase power.....but you will pay a price in eff. and heat build up in the motor

That said.........I did crank it up at a fly in to prove a point about increase in speed is just a couple of beeps away if you want it.........I really didn't want to come in second on speed passes..........132 on 4 cells.........only had to go up 5 degrees on timing........speed went from 128 to 132 avg.

Max of 141 in dive.

If you play with the timing do it VERY carefully.......YOU ARE HERE BY WARNED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks chipped - reset timing to 5, just to be safe...

Have any of you guys tried that Quanum Telemetry System that HK sells (cheap 60 bucks)? The reviews appear to be really good...it would be great to view real time what is going on in the plane

Might try and get in a flight today...temps will be in the low forties...nice and cool

If you connect the power panel (LCD screen) to a Eagle tree data logger, it will be just like a wattmeter.

You can choose what it shows on the screen.
Up to 4 numbers in each corner of screen ......and up to 5 flashings screens with refresh rate that you choose.

$40 retail...$36 possible.

RATS... RATS... RATS

Got to the field today perfect weather high forties, light wind, sun at my back....launch went well despite the fact I haven't launched a heavy in awhile...lots of up trim prior to the toss

Two trim laps...then hammered it....and the stutter returned Really bummed!!!

Tomorrow am going to take all the joints apart and start over! Great flights just slower than I wanted to go...those 150mph pylon planes spoiled me

I really want one of those Loggers w/ the GPS add on

FLASH...I think I found a cruddy joint tonight between the ESC and motor...I must have been out to lunch when I soldered that joint...will know tomorrow if that was the problem

Hey everyone. I got a MEGA 16/15/3 from the local swap shop last weekend. Can someone give me some prop suggestions? Using a 3s 2300mah (unsure of C rating - whitebox from HobbyKing). Also wondering what kind of speed I can expect with given props...at least until I am able to get some better 3s-4s packs this winter. Thanks!

hornetnz- If memory is correct that is a high KV (3000 or so) motor so I would start small on the props say 4.75x4.75 and check your amps. Check Mega's site (Megamotorcz) for the specs on that motor....it is a 400 sized replacement/upgrade. Be careful hooking it up to 4S I think a couple of pages back one of the guys COOKED his

That is a great little motor...I'd like to have one for my 400 class balsa and glass pylon planes

I would look for a motor thats 6.35 oz IF you mount it like the 16/40/2 that you are waiting on.

If you mount it so its hanging off the back, then your guess is as good as mine, Murdo could probably make a better reccomendation that I could on that one.

Rimripper,

I totally understand the itch to get up in the air! Sitting on it because you're missing just that one little component is tough.

What battery can you run on it? If you can run something around the size of a 4S 3000, my thought is that an outrunner like the Scorpion HK 2221-2010kv would get fun performance and have a good chance of balancing out your plane.
Hobby City also has the 2836-2350kv motor that should be near the same performance. It's on backorder now, though, and you might run into the same overseas shipping wait as with the Mega. Lots of them floating around the forums, though.

Both these motors will mount inside the Custom RC mount without modification.
You can also hang the motor off the back end like Mopar said. It'll get the weight farther back to balance out a heavier battery. For a motor like these, it will require reversing the shaft so it comes out the bell end of the motor.

Post up what battery you are able to fly now, and we'll see if we can't find something else for you.

Rim - If ya can't find something at the LHS (Great Hobbies I presume) I've got a Hyperion outrunner (2221) 3500kv. With a 5x5 prop it cranks out about 68 amps WOT at over 800 watts which will push that plane great...you can borrow it till your motor gets in...let me know and I'll mail it from Prince Albert on Monday! I know what it is like up here in the North waiting for something and none of the LHS's have anything High Perf in stock. We just got a great two day warm up but the cold is coming

Got a great flight in yesterday ....with some great WOT passes

I took video and the sound quality is really good....can anyone do some speed measurements to give me a base line for this setup I am currently running?

I'll try and get it uploaded...tried yesterday and had some problems with youtube. Will try again!

Yesterday I got about 4 good passes before the stuttering started again. Then today I got another flight in with the second battery (after teaching a kid to fly a CUB).

Anyway 4 to 5 seconds into the WOT passes the stuttering would start. Would turn downwind, base, line it up and hammer the throttle...mabey one or two seconds after the plane passed me and was going away the stuttering would start. The first half of the runs were great the second half sounded like the REV limiter on my old Drag Bike. Never had this problem before going to 5S

I'm stumped...all connections are good

Hey Murd...got the video uploaded last night

www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8i8TDO8dZg

The temp was 50 degrees and all speed passes were made into a 6mph headwind.
At about 1:50 into the video is the best pass. Then towards the end of the vid you can hear the stuttering start. You can just see the plane streak by in the upper right corner of the screen and at the end you can see it land just to the right of where I am standing.

Murdo - If you dont mind, I would like to weigh in on this one :

Arcticflyer,
If this is your setup .(post #322).. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_10026168/anchors_10113234/mpage_13/key_/anchor/tm.htm#

Then may I make a few reccomendations ;

#1. Slap your thigh by following through when throwing that Stryker, you will get your hand caught like that by the prop one day !!

#2. NEVER again run full throttle with your head in the plane of that prop, you will get hurt if anything lets go !!

#3. Set the LVCO to hard cutoff and I would venture to bet that the studdering stops and the motor just cuts off. Reset the throttle to zero and you can throttle up again for landing only. Do NOT try for full throttle or another speed run after LVCO. The soft cut setting wont allways beep through the ESC 2 times to let you know that LVCO was reached.

#4. Can we get you to fly lower and directly over the camera so we can nail down your speeds ????

Please go over each setting on your CC Phoenix 125 and pm me or post them.
That motor will take 5s5000 cells and a 6.5x6 prop for 10 second full throttle bursts no problems.
