MVVS .49 or Rossi .45 or Irvine .53 or Webra .50

I'm looking for something to put on my Morris the Knife. I mostly want a Very linear throttle response, and good Low RPM performance, and a good quick transition. A good engine for the Morris the Knife basically.

Which one has:
best throttle charactersitics?
best longevity?
best low RPM performance?
best quick throttle response?
best for easy tuning and everyday use?!!!
best quality?

I'm wanting to stay around $130 in price, these all seem pretty close.

I'd be happy to hear other recommendations too.

I've been using an O.S. 46 FX, but I've got a plane better suited for it (Somethin' Extra), the O.S. did pretty good in my opinion.

Hey Dave, have you considered the Webra 50GT? I replaced the 46FX on my Somethin' Extra with the Webra and it really hauls! Very light and powerful, idles very nicely, excellent transition, bolts right into the same mounting holes as the 46FX, and right in the $120 - $130 price range.

I'll put that on my list! So many options! Mostly looking for a good fun fly engine, top end speed is NOT a consideration, nor is it an option with the Morris the Knife.

I would go with the MVVS. I have the Rossi, Irvine and MVVS and the MVVS is second only to my Jett .46 which costs considerably more (although worth every penny, 16700 on a 10/6). The MVVS is a torquey screamer and is very docile in terms of user friendliness, parts are easily obtained and cylinder configuration can be changed to make it side or rear exhaust. Not possible on the other two. That said, they are all good engines!

Max

P.S. they all beat the hell out of O.S. (Overpriced S**t)

Your 46FX would work fine in a MTK (is it an ARF?). In fact I flew my MTK with an MVVS 40 and an 11x4 prop and it was awesome. But of the bunch you mentioned, the MVVS 49 would be best all round engine. The Webra would be a little lighter, the Rossi a little bit heavier. They all make about the same power, but there's very few 2C that can match the 49s instaneous response and killer midrange.

My MTK is a kit built plane. The o.s. 46 fx did fine on it, just need to replace a Fox .45 on my somethin' Extra with something that has a better midrange, so I'm taking it off of the MTK. Anybody want to buy a Fox .45 ;-)

Seems that the MVVS .49 is looking good.

BTW, I own a MVVS 49, Rossi 45, and a Webra 50. I personally rank them in this order:

1. MVVS 49
2. Rossi 45
3. Webra 50

You may be surprised I ranked the Rossi higher than the Webra, but it's a super smooth (power is almost electric linear), easy to tune and break in, and hauls even with a pitts muffler. I was amazed that my Rossi turned an APC 11x7 prop over 13.5k with a pitts muffler (on FAI fuel)! I have a TT Pro-46 also equipped with a pitts which only turns 13k with an APC 11x6 prop (on 15% nitro fuel). But I'd get a 49 in a heartbeat for one of them profile planes. Can't beat the sound of an MVVS mini-tuned pipe early in the morning !!!

When I go back to your original post;

"Which one has:
best throttle charactersitics?
best longevity?
best low RPM performance?
best quick throttle response?
best for easy tuning and everyday use?!!!
best quality? "

There's a clearcut hands down winner to the above criteria
and it hasn't even been mentioned yet YS 45
With it's unique fuel system, It's Throttle response is much better than anything mentioned. As an added bonus you can place the tank at the aircraft CG.

The only drawback is the retail price is higher. I think the saying goes " Quality is Remembered Long After Price is Forgotten"
Besides I just saw a like new one go for $110 here on RCU.

Didn't even think about YS, just assumed they cost too much. I'll have to look into them.

Ya, I've heard that they can be tuff to get adjusted right the first time, but once they're running, they are supposed to be good. Don't see any in my price range though, think I'll end up going with the MVVS .49. Thanks for your help

Here! Just cut and pasted this from RCU.

Got a slightly used YS 45 SE with header and mini tuned pipe you might be interested in. Includes new YS check valve for fuel pressure line from pump. Have not run it since I purchased it but it has great compression and smooth bearings. Will take $120.00 for the engine or the engine plus $$ for a FA-72 Saito or OS 70 Surpass II in good to excellent condition.

You could buy this engine try it & in the unlikely event you don't like it, You could resell it for $120. If you buy a new MVVS for $110 and try to sell that after you've tried it you will be lucky to get $60.
YS's are not a PIA! They are the #1 engine for choppers or for Pattern. Of course some people would have trouble getting a Briggs & Stratton to run right.

Hmm, got me thinking about YS, I'm no expert on YS, what are the real world advantages to them (besides fuel tank mounting)?

The throttle response is much better!
It is an acknowledged high quality engine so it's resale value is higher.
It's right among the leaders in power output.
The YS ABC piston/liner is among the best (They last a long time)

This isn't to say the engines you listed in your original post arn't good engines, they are!
But with the criteria you listed, YS is an easy winner. If you gave me different criteria, I'd probably tout another engine.

If you are just buying the thing for resale, hell, get a Cyclon or Nelson. Both will get a lot on resale but are a **** to get setup right! The Y.S. with the pump and diaphragm just have one more thing to go wrong with them. Besides, they will NOT outperform the MVVS.
