Doen any of you know a formula to determine what amperage to use when field charging a battery.

ALl depends on what type of battery.

For quick-charging a NiCd:
Never charge and more the 3C (3 times its rated capacity)

For NiMH:
Never more then 2C

For all Lithium based:
Never more then 1C

I've charged some nicads at 4C(usually 2-3C) but have watched them closely and its worked fine for me. I presume their life may be a little shorter but it hasn't been an issue yet for me.

I have a battery with cells that are 2.5in long. Are these "A" sized?

While you can charge at higher rates, both Sanyo and Panasonic state that 1C is the max charge rate.
