Accident occurred : Sunday, July 20, 2003 at ST. THOMAS, VI
Aircraft : Tower Hobbies 'Trainer .40'
Engine : OS .40 LA
Owner: "Miles"
Pilot: "visioneer_one"
Injuries: 2, nonfatal.

On July 20, at approximately 1040 atlantic standard time, a Tower Trainer .40 nonregistered homebuilt airplane, was damaged following impact with terrain in St. Thomas, VI. The private pilot was not injured. The pilot was operating the airplane under Title 14 CFR Part 103. Visual meteorological conditions with winds in excess of 10 knots prevailed for the personal flight that originated from Simón Pierre Field approximately 5 minutes before the accident. No flight plan had been filed.

The aircraft was low and floating (past mid-field; altitude estimated as well under 5 feet) after an aborted touch-and-go. The pilot abruptly went to WOT and declared mayday to Simón Pierre TWR. The plane climbed slowly and barely cleared the fence at the end of the runway, then rolled to knife edge while slowly turning downwind. The pilot skimmed the treeline while heading downwind, then reduced throttle and attempted to turn back upwind. The final turn attempt was unsuccessful, so the pilot leveled the plane and (unsuccessfully) guided the plane into the bush. Damage was limited to a crushed area on the wing and a broken prop.

Addendum : Upon retrieving the airframe from the bush it was observed that the plastic elevator clevis had sprung open. The elastic clevis keeper was missing.

The St. Thomas R/C Association Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:
PROPER GLIDEPATH.. NOT ATTAINED.. PILOT IN COMMAND

Contributing Factors
CONTROL SURFACE FAILURE
