STRCASB Identification: STT003F028 . The docket is stored on visioneer_one's ancient Powerbook

Accident occurred : Sunday, July 27, 2003 at ST. THOMAS, VI
Aircraft : Hangar 9 'Ultra Stick 1.20'
Engine : YS 1.40L
Pilot: "BigD"
Injuries: Multiple, fatal.

On July 27, at approximately 1150 Atlantic standard time, a Hangar 9 Ultra Stick 1.20 nonregistered homebuilt airplane, was destroyed following impact with terrain in St. Thomas, VI. The private pilot was not injured. The owner/pilot was operating the airplane under Title 14 CFR Part 103. Visual meteorological conditions with winds in excess of 10 knots prevailed for the personal flight that originated from Simón Pierre Field approximately 7 minutes before the accident. No flight plan had been filed.

While flying upwind at high speed the airplane's ailerons were observed to be fluttering wildly. The pilot pulled the power back; the fluttering subsided. The pilot circled and made a slow flyby and visually inspected the surfaces - they appeared to be functioning normally. The pilot flew a few more circuits at moderate speed, then announced his intent to land. The plane was made a normal approach, until it was approx. 75 feet away from he runway, at which point it abruptly rolled inverted and spiraled in. The wing, fuselage and engine were all sustained severe damage.

Addendum 1 : The pilot reported that the aircraft was flying normally until he switched on 'crow' mode, at which point it spiraled out of control.

Addendum 2 : Upon examination of the crash site it was observed that the aileron and flap surfaces on the left wing were completely detached, while those on the right wing were loose.

The St. Thomas R/C Association Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows:
CONTROL SURFACE FAILURE

Contributing Factors
AIRSPEED.. Vne EXCEEDED

Hi Don
Had to see what was going on in St Thomas and I thought I noticed some spare parts under you feet. Sorry about the crash and let Barret know that I hope he gets his plane together before I come Back. Take care Herbert
