both models are said to be for 40-50cc gas. According to my contact here they have not even finished the moulds yet so they are going to be a little while. Spring 2013 is the expected date for delivery

I am selling my ESM P-39 pneumatic retracts (2sets&parts) on RCGroups. I'd like to pick up a set of the Seirra Retracts, but I'm concerned with the installation. Someone showed me a photo before, and I remember that there was a servo up front for steering, and from what I remember, much modification was needed for the nose retract installation. As I recall, the mount was moved forward quite a bit, I think to get the 'up' attitude needed to be more scale like.

My first concern is the installation itself. My second concern is if the retract is in-deed moved forward more, will a gas motor still fit? (I had a DLE30 on mine and know that there wasn't much room for anything else, let alone more retract.)

Has anyone here installed the Seirra gear? Have pictures? Have any instruction on installation? Thanks in advance.

I'm asking $200 for 2 sets of retracts. (One slightly used with replaced pins, One brand new). Please note: Only tires for 1 set. Both front nose pins are bent as it is soft metal.

What I'm looking for is more information on the Seirra retracts. Its a large investment for me to spend, and I don't want to find out after the fact that I either can't install, or there is no room for a 50cc engine. Any pictures, video, instructions, or help of any kind would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

(Admin - let me know if I'm breaking any rules by above sale post and I will promptly remove. Thanks)

Got mine on the bench, already ca'd the ailerons. Seems like I'm almost finished.. Not. Got the new gen ESM electric retracts, probaly going to need the better wheels. I have a Hacker 60L, castle 120 hv and twin Nano 5000ma lipos in series that I have been flying on another plane that I will use. 22" Metchlik sp?? prop, it has tons of power. We need to get this thread going again. I would like to see some flying vids and something about the nose gear mod /beefing up of the rails etc. Now for my P-39 motivational story: Living in Fairbanks, AK in 1977 on top of Lackloy Hill, 3 miles off the departure end of 24s I believe it was. One day my daughter comes running in the house and says, "daddy, we just found a Russian airplane!" I say, is it a real one and she say, "Yes!" I say how do you know it's Russian and she says it has red stars on OD green wings. I'm excited. We go look in the birch tree leaves on the side of the hill looking right at the runways of Ft. Wainwright Army Air Fld. And sure enough, the wing and part of the fuse of a Russian markings P-39" They of course felw thousands of WWII lend lease aircraft off of FT. Wainright to Nome and then Russia. Never doubt your kid. Wallace Tharp

Worked on my ESM P-39 some today in my garage, 101 F on the temp, it's still Phoneix. It is fairly comfortable with my "swamp-cooler" going with me standing in the breeze. Couldn't find the push-rods that were suppose to be included, using my own left over stuff including Du Bro 1/4 scale control horns with a ball link on the horn. Everything fits nice and looks good so far. I will heed the previous warnings on the thread and re-glue everything that needs it. Hope to have it looking and flying good for this years 1/8th scale warbird fly in in N. PHX. Wallace Tharp

My control rods are ingeniously well hidden under one of the pieces of cardboard in the box, I couldn't find them or the wing joiner for quite some time, was fun looking and looking and then looking again :-)

I am in Litchfield and also waiting for the garage to cool off

Cheers

Same here. Geez, is this summer EVER going to end? Looking forward to seeing the P-39 at the OEAF event in a couple of weeks Wally. There is a scale fly-in down in Tucson in early November and SVF just added one to their schedule for January so plenty of opportunity to show off the scale birds around AZ this season.

AZ Thud, I'll look there. What are you using for power on your P-39? Is yours flying? Does the Thud mean you flew or worked on F-105s. I controlled them in Thailand in 1969 & 70 at Korat Royal Thai AFB. My first USAF assignment was Air Traffic Controller at Itazuke AB, Japan and we werre transitioning out of Huns, (F-100s) and in to about 3 squadrons F-105s. PACAF, 8th TAC Fighter Wing. What a screamer they were!!!! Beautiful and fast on the deck!!! Not much of a load hauler, totally outclassed by the Phanthom (F-4). Chad, Looking forward to Eight Air Force, I plan to go to the Lk Havasu, AZ float fly on the weekend of Nov 2nd. Going to fly at ARCS this Sun. May be we will see you there. Thud if you are not a member you can come as my guest. What are you guys working on now? Wallace Tharp

Anybody got a used cockpit kit, spinner & or scale pilot left over from an ESM P-39 for sale? I could use the nice aluminum wheels also if the price is right. Wallace Tharp

As you can see , I am trying t make this thread live on, mostly because it was influntial in my ordering one. My wing is finished, I am happy with the flap and aileron set up but as noted I used my own threadedrod and 1/4 scale Dubro contro hinges with ball-links on the horn. The flaps are split, don't see that a lot, ala DC-3 & Cessna 310. They fit great. Very straight. I clamped one to help just a little, but almost perfect now. I installed my ESM Series II electric retracts and lock-tighted everything. Only snafu here was, one wrong axel length on the mains that Thomas @ VQ will send and the screws to mount the retract into the wook beams wre so soft that they would not take any torque. Changed that. I just missed SeriesIII, hope that ws not a mistake. The mains operate great, about 14 seconds transit time, quite realistic. I got the chees-o wheels and tires, may have to replace them. Wallace Tharp

I have not really started on mine, I have been gathering the bits for the last 6 months or so as its pretty hot to be in the garage to enjoy the time.    So for the questions

Power I am going to go with my trusty E-Flite 160 on 12S with a Castle ICE HV 80,   I have had a couple of planes on this setup both 10 and 12 S and its been rock solid, max AMPS is kept below 70 on the bench.    I have one of Ty's cockpits and will be starting with it soon, I have 2 other projects to get cleared away first.    I also have a set of Seirra Gear for the plane and they are works of art, I use LADO / E-Retract electric actuators on all my other machines, but it looks like we are going to have to use an alternative on this one.   Stay tuned to see how this one works out.
Needless to say this plane will not be at the fall OEAF event, in fact I am going to be in Albequeque so I won't be either, I am hopeful for the spring event though and to bring the p-39.    I am going to be doing a couple of other things with one, hiding and cuffomg the aileron hinges and hiding the flap linkages and the rudder as best I can.    I ordered up some Precision Dry Transfer markings of Hell's Bells in Guadacanal markings with the British paint scheme,    OD is just too boring.    I also plan to add the panel lines to the wings using the tape and paint method over top of a fully sheeted wing and glass.
So the Thud question - Sorry no 105's, I do volunteer work with the CAF (Confeder whoops Commerative Air Force), I work with the Tora Tora Tora group as a pyro tech, after a show in Tuscon many years ago it seems that there was a party.    During the coarse of the party I managed to slip on some wet concrete and the first thing that hit the ground was my head and managed to not spill the balance of my glass of milk.    I got a huge welt on my head and a phone call the next day saying that after the Thud of my head hitting the concrete, that it only be fitting that I be given the name "Thud" in celebration of my ground pounding prowess.

Cheers!

Rick

Rick, great reply. Have you found a 5" spinner for you P-39. I need a yellow one. I agree that od is not always the greatest color. I liked the Mr. Mennen theme and saw it fly a couple of times at Reno. If I go all out like it sounds like you are doing I will do it later. I do want a ty's cockpit kit however. They just look too cool! Do you have a pilot for yours ? I would like to see your Sierra retracts, I hear they are the best. Trial fit my wing to the fuse today, looks like it was made for it! wallace.tharp

Those interested in P-39 history, check out Wikipedia under "Bell P-39 Aircobra." There is a great pic of a P-63 in there too. A site called "Warbird Aero Press.com" has a gret pic of Mr. Mennen, a former Reno racer in a cool sort of blue'/aqua paint job. Good pic of the nose panels off on Wikipedia also and some great Russian WWII pix. Did you know the 37MM cannon was built at the Oldsmoble plant? wallace.tharp

Thud, found my pushrods, right where you said to look as I was breaking down the shipping box for the trash can. Thnx. Thomas at VQ Warbirds is sending the V-III electrics for my -II.5s, looks like just shipping costs to me. Flew my Sig P-51B at One Eighth AF in Apache Juncion, AZ last Sat. Lost the muf and was foolish enough to try a go around on a too long touchdown, engine quit, knocked off one of the mains. Not serious damage. Also flew my Goldberg Decathlon, one crapy landing an a good one. AND!! each entrant got to pick a poker chip with a number on it for door prizes and I won a 1.5 CC gasser with a $229 retail price on it. One of the guys said, hey, Wallace, didn't you say you are going all elecric? Wanna sell that gasser? Five minutes later I am walking back to my spot with $ 200 cash in my pocket. Being rich and all I was over at a vender booth buying aluminum wheels and good tires for my ESM P-39 within an hour. Great fly in, There will be some good vids! Perfect weather, it's Arizona of course. Did you know we actually have more sunshine than the sunshine state? Really, yu can Google it. wallace.tharp

Got my Hang # 9 yellow spinner in the mail along with an inexpensive pilot, kind of generic looking. Tower Hobby stuff, about 40 bucks total. Wife can toll paint so I will ask her to do some work and the helmate & face and try to get an oxygen mask thst looks ok. Ordered my Ty's cockpit from Thomas at VQWarbirds a couple of days ago. If the pictures and video are close it is fantastic. Saw a great cockpit on a P-47 at One Eighth Air Force last weekend. Can't remember the gentleman's name but he had a great scale pilot in there too. Only problem was it had bendable knees with the joint exposed and short pants!!! There were some beautiful models there. Everyone was paying a lot of attention to a half scale J-3. It flew several times and the guy handled it well even with about 7 kts of cross wind. It was in Mesa, AZ, really Apache junction.... What a beautiful flying facility and great folks too! Come on, P-39 people, keep this thread going. wallace.tharp

Hi Folks
I had a hard landing back on the 6th of october at my club fun fly and the nose gear mounts broke away from the fire wall. has any one had this happen to your
ESM P39 and how did you fix it . Is it better to replace the whole fire wall and gear mounts or just replace the part that broke out and add some reinforcing the problem here is that i would have to cut out the fiberglass on the fire wall before i could replace the wood and would have to re glass it again to make sure it is strong .

I have had to cut out the bottom 1/4 of the fire wall in order to replace the broke out wood and my hope is i can just replace it with all new good wood and reinforcing and i will take some photo's asap for you all.
PS
I just hope i can get it strong enough again

Hey Lifer,

I put the DLE 30 in it. More than enough power (very streamline fuse.) and the engine mounts are the perfect length for the spinner to clear with no adjustments.

lovegoflyguy,

Been looking at this plane. did you have to cut any of the cowl on the side or does the muffer fit inside the cowl? How is your engine not overheating with no incoming air?

Oh man that is not good and I am sorry to hear it.    My wings are with someone else at the moment, as I am getting some help with some mods to them.    I should have them back this weekend and if they are not joined I will scetch and scan my joiner.    Failing that you can try a couple of other folks.    I have talked with the people at ArfPro's, they are an ESM distributor, they might be able to help with a scetch or send you another one.    Maybe Troybilt or VQ can help, not sure where you got yours...

Anyway at this time I am tentative to get my wings/wing back this weekend will let you know.

Good luck and best wishes.

Cheers
