Hey again Brian,

Thanks for the heads up mate -gotta order me some of them servo nutz. My fingers are small and nimble, and I have l-o-n-g needle-nose pliers and tweezers - but if I need forceps I can ask one of my work collegues - you see I work at a private hospital & am good friends with many doctors & nursing staff!!

Peter
Edit I have just searched and searched in Aust and can't find anything similiar to those mounting nuts (even out of HongKong)...... Bummer!!

Peter,

If you have ANY kind of LHS near you they will have them as they are a common part. If not, DON'T fret!

All you have to do is take one of those HUNDREDS of servo arms you have laying about and take "side cuts" and snip the arms with the holes intact and use them. They work perfectly!

b

PS I like the CF blades. I have used 3 sets on my birds and within < 4 flights my birds will take a "dirt nap". The dang things are phreaking "ground magnets" for me. They tend to make the bird over responsive for me as well for my existing skill set. The crappy, unbalanced "glass fiber" ones from HK serve me well! I will say this. I ordered two sets of CF today!

Yah,
You can uses screws and nuts but the idea is twice over. When you use "wood screws" and slip the plastic nuts over them they tend to find their way perfectly to fit. Additionally, when you crash the sacrificial servo nuts will simply strip off and save the servo case!
As for forceps I too as you may recall have a consistent repository of the same!
They work VERY well for our hobby as they "lock" in place.
In our hospital they throw away perfectly good ones!

Hey again Brian,

I know what you mean mate! Anyone would think forceps are a disposable item! The places where you find them discarded would make your toes curl - including inside bodies & outdoor garden beds......
Seriously, they are a useful item to have in your tool box.

Peter

Hey again Brian,

Thanks again mate - I'll be passing my LHS in a couple of days on my mountain-bike, so will drop in and see.......
If not, I will have to try the side-cutters method of snipping off servo arms - I'm sure I can find some around here

P.S. Shhhhh, don't tell Rob, but I am not really missing him ATM - due to all the help I am getting from you

Glad to help as you have been so helpful in the past (helpful in helping me remove money from my wallet too)!

Yah, I have amassed about 2lbs of servo arms I will NEVER use and they work very well in a pinch! The idea of "squaring" the sides as much as possible allows the ersatz nuts to automatically align with the side of the servo and "set" itself!

Enjoy your day as we are slipping into the night here!

Hey everyone,

I have some questions regarding the HK-450. I just went out and bought the $9.99 special. I am trying to put one together on a very tight budget. I am not looking for a super 3d performer. Just something to do some sport flying. I have an old corona 120 that I am going to use as a donor. I was wodering if Hitec hs81s will work for servos and a futaba gy240 will work as a gyro? Trying to re-use some older stuff. I have seen the vids on you tube and stuff. Been practicing with Real Flight. Just excited to put it all together and get to fly it!

Hey again..   I'm finally in my hotel smack bang in the middle of Australia, a place called Ayers Rock..  (picture below)

Nothing here but hot red dust and flies.. (My genetics definately did not originate here.. I have no affinity with the harsh Australian outback.. in fact I detest it.. - but what can you do? ..)

Give me the mountains of Canada, or the lakes and Snow of Switzerland ANY DAY...

Ok.. back to topic...

Hey, really enjoyed watching your video just now. and you do a great commentary while flying.. I doubt I could do that and tend to get cranky at the kids if they talk to me while I'm flying...

your videos inspire me Brian.. I just ordered this..  http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=9753

And thanks for the info on the MD922 Servos.. I"ll look them up shortly.. but they sound great.

I'm always trying to work out how to "easily visualise" what I'm supposed to do with my fingers when flying the helis and I came up with one while flying the big bird today.. (2 hours on autopilot in cruise is perfect thinkin' time..."

So imagine you are holding a disk in your right hand (IE the main gear of your heli)  Holding it flat and horizontal with your thumb and forefinger above and below it, holding it near the centre shaft hole.

Hold it directly in front of you.

Now.. take your left thumb.. and place your left thumb on edge of the disk that is facing directly towards you (ie on the teeth of the gear..)

As you move your thumb left the edge nearest you moves left and vice versa..

Do that a couple of times, moving your thumb as if it were moving the joystick on your RC TX..

That action and reaction is exactly what you get when hovering inverted and using tail rotor..  (orientation of the tail rotor when inverted is confusing the hell out of me in flight and I'd always wrong thumb it.)

Now I will visualies that my thumb is rotating the part of the heli closest to me in the direction my thumb moves..

Hope my description made sense??

Anyway.. I'll try it next time and see how it goes..

Yes, i do miss my princess.. and my other princess and my Stormtrooper and my daughers.. and oh yeah.. Wifey too...

Seriously.. yes we both hate it when i go away..

...and take care out there catching those bad guys.. it gave me a twinge of jealousy when you mentioned that in your video.. Its in the blood I thing... "to protect and serve". .. but now I just serve seafood entrees to my passengers...   not quite the same...

Here is Ayers rock.. which I can see from my hotel balcony..

And this is like the view I had a few hours ago..

Are THESE the servos that you mean?? Sound great mate! Gotta get me three of them for when Rob can drop by and help me with my GT build.....

Peter
Edit My last impulse buy just arrived - THESE Carbon Fiber rotor blades (& tail rotor blades) from Walkera-parts.com

Those servos look good.. looking at the specs.. they are fast and strong little buggers...  I'll try and source some also...

Impulse buys... gotta love em..

I don't think you can use the hs-81 servos. I believe they are a little too big to be used as cyclic servos, you'd wind up having to grind the frame to get them to fit. Better to order a set of HS-65MG or better yet an entire set of DS929MG for the cost of one HS-65MG. You could use one of the HS-81 on the tail, but there are much lighter and faster tail servos out there.

i just finished repair on my hk450 or what ever you want to call it 29.00 at value hobby. i was flying for a while and did my first loops rolls and hoverd inverted and man what a rush to hear the blades beat the air.

i dont care what people think about the clone stuff its cheaper to learn on the crash i had i upgraded to a metal head and tail from xheli and 3 mg servos for 40 bucks
and it will darn near fly hands off.

heli= 29.00 value hobby
motor=15.00 value hobby
align 500 gyro= 15.00 ebay
battery 2200 20c had already
eflight 35amp esc= 30.00 lhs
metalhead tail 29.00 xheli
servos mg = 24.00 xheli
total==142.00

trex 450cf= 400.00 bare

ill stay wih the cheeeeeep stuff work for me.......for learning right

and can we use a 2cell pack on the 450
what would i need to change im not gona do any hard stick banging

Hey.. I'm totally with you on the cheap helis.. and you know what.. they are NOT that cheap in quality...

I had a Blade 400 and the head was basically ALL Plastic.. I didn't know any better at the time..

But the EXI, the 450 GT and the PRO all have FAR better heads than the Blade 400..

Even the $9.99 450 Barebones kit from Hobbyking has a head that is equal to that in the Blade.. lots of plastic but put them side by side.. the HK is a better head!

My Blade 400 cost me $400 Aussie dollars, and that was on a super special.. they are normally $499..

I remember I was so scared to fly it the first few times because it had cost so much..

I love these clones.. they just fly better anyway!

Now to answer your question with a question..

Why would you want to use 2 cell batteries?

It is all a matter of how much power you need..

the 450 clones need a rotor head speed within the range of 2800 to 3300.

you work out the head speed this way...

Motor Pinion Teeth, divided by main gear teeth, multiply by Motor KV and multiply by Battery volts..

An example..

a 3500 Kv motor with an 11 tooth pinion..

11 divided by 150 =  0.07333

0.07333 times 3500 (Kv) = 256.6

256.6 x 11.1 (volts) = 2823 RPM  so that would be fine.. if a little on the low end..

you can do the sums but a few examples.. all based on 11.1 volt 3 cell batteries..

3500 KV motor with 12 T pinion = 3108 RPM

4000 Kv motor with an 11 T = 3256

These are all acceptable combinations for the 450 clones..

Now if you want to use 2 cell you are only working with 7.4 volts...

So a 4000 Kv motor, with a 13 T pinion would only give you 2565 RPM  - not really enough..

and a 4000 Kv motor is a real ripper..

and having to use a 13 T pinion, you are really loading up the motor so your flight times would reduce..

Hope that helps..

YOu can find a few head speed calculators online through google,  but this one is my favourite.. nice and easy to use..

Hey Brian, Peter,

Just reading the posts about the nuts... where do you use these? any chance of a picture?

My Gt and the Pro kit came with small bolts and hex nuts. ..  They didn't seem to be needed for anything else and there were 6 of them so I assumed they were for holding in the servos..

In this picture you can see the head of one servo bolt on the top.. and the nut on the inside of the frame on the lower servo..

These came with the kit and I used red locktite carefully placed on the bolt and nut when tightening.. They've been fine for almost 200 flights but if there is a better way of securing the servos I'm all ears!

The Pro uses a different system, a hex bolt straight into the alloy frame...

Hey.. I just bought the same heli..

Your HS81s will be too big.. they are 29.72 x 11.94 x 29.46

I use HS 65 MG which are 23.37 x 11.43 x 23.88

IE much smaller and the 65s only JUST fit.. See the links above about the 922 servo.. they look great..  I have also orderd a bunch of these

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=14458   I have not tried them before but will report again after testing them..

No reason the GY240 would not work.. don't know much about that gyro..

The turnigy DS480 is a great servo for the tail.. I have it on two of my helis.. they work great..

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=8511
Good luck and keep us posted...

Ok cool, I'll have to look into some of those. Relatively new to R/C Helo's. I guess I'll leave the servos in the Corona. I guess I will need to get an ESC and motor combo too. I have the Blade MSR to keep me busy while I get this project set up. Takes a while for stuff to get here. Iraq's mail system isn't the greatest.

and my 2 millimeters forward today was landing while nose in...

Yo Brian!

Sorry to read about your attack of the dumb thumbs

I enjoyed your vid and a few things struck me:

1)  At first you were so smooth I thought the vid was in slow motion
2)  A grass hoper as big as me?? - that's funny!
3)  Also funny was when you went quiet
4)  Great nose-ins!

I strongly recommend a 40 amp Hobbywing Platinum ESC

It will power any motor you ever put in a 450 size hel.. I've had issues with 30am and 25 amp ESC;s over heating..   I only use the 40 now..

Also I strongly recomment the Turnigy Typhoon 2215.. perfect combo for a 450 heli

Agreed!  A slightly cheaper esc option is the Hobbywing Pentium / Turnigy Plush 40A (they are the same).  I got mine from eBay as the Turnigy's seem to be always out of stock!

Hi Rob,

Great flight mate!  Nose-in landing too!

Simon

Hey Simon, thanks.. Have you flown lately?

Not since last weekend.  Charging lipo's now!

I'm a bit under the weather with a cold so it will probably only be fish tankin' lol

Some Perspective..

I just attacked the mini bar in the hotel..

Had a chocolate bar, had a packet of chips, cracked open a red wine bottle.. half way through it now.. got the munchies.

had another packet of chips.. cracked open a sparkling mineral water..

I'll enjoy this all for an hour..

I just added up the total.. I could have bought a new heli, 4 servos.. a HK Cyro.. and a motor..  for the price of this food and wine..

the heli would have given me enjoyment for months!

Ok.. I'll log off now before I finish the bottle and start posting how much I love all you guys... ha ha.. just kidding..  night all

PS. I knew I was addicted to RC helis today.. when we landed, there were several full size helicopters doing the scenic tours.. landing every 5 mins.. as I was watching them come in to land.. (in a nose in perspective) my fingers were actually moving automatically with the helicopter..  the muscle memory just took over..

Hi again Rob!

You skills used to inspire me, now they demoralize me!

Crashed yesterday practicing nose in and was doing REALLY well after this vid..

Then did the ole dumb thumb, then recovered and thought I could just get back on the horse.

Mistake. I must rest my mind after an adrenalin fueled ''save'' as I crashed HARD!

Finally killed an MD922 servo of which I don't have a replacement!

Lucky for me I have an redundant 450 (The Terror Pigeon)!

What's funny is, is I only lost one cyclic MD922 priced at 10 bux but I felt it necessary to order 100 bux worth of partz??

Thanx again for sharing Rob. Yer my hero!

b

Yo Brian!

Sorry to read about your attack of the dumb thumbs

I enjoyed your vid and a few things struck me:

1)  At first you were so smooth I thought the vid was in slow motion

I was "fish tankin'"

2)  A grass hoper as big as me?? - that's funny!

Slightly larger

3)  Also funny was when you went quiet

A rarity, I know

4)  Great nose-ins!

I refer to that maneuver as "Simoninzing"

Hey again Brian,

Thanks for the heads up mate -gotta order me some of them servo nutz. My fingers are small and nimble, and I have l-o-n-g needle-nose pliers and tweezers - but if I need forceps I can ask one of my work collegues - you see I work at a private hospital & am good friends with many doctors & nursing staff!!

Peter

Yah,

You can uses screws and nuts but the idea is twice over. When you use ''wood screws'' and slip the plastic nuts over them they tend to find their way perfectly to fit. Additionally, when you crash the sacrificial servo nuts will simply strip off and save the servo case!

As for forceps I too as you may recall have a consistent repository of the same!

They work VERY well for our hobby as they ''lock'' in place.

In our hospital they throw away perfectly good ones!

b

Hiya Rob,

The idea there again is when one crashes (in my case I should change my nic to "sircrashalot" and yours to "sircrashnotsomuch") they break the "sacrificial nut" loose rather than the servo case or the frame.

I did the exact same thing you did and used a nut/bolt and some glue. I got about 1/2 dozen flights in and do to being mildly insane and running wires near a spinning armature, I burnt my BEC lines in two killing a BEC AND my HK401B "Cyro" and in effect drillin' the Thunder Chicken into the dirt! Broke the case on one of my HXT's.

"Case" in point!

Nice Red Rock BTW.

What's the line down the middle??
