Hi Guys,

Just a quick heads up on the $10 Helicopter and restocking info at Hobbyking.  I've just had a reply to my enquirey asking if they are going to restock this helicopter & the answer from "Jenny" is:

Thanks Simon,

That is a pleasant surprise.. i had suspected that heli was an older version and they had lowered the price to $10 to clear out the old stock..

I am really happy about this as I will definately buy a "few more $10 Helis"

Quick question for you Futaba guys.

I was doing a electronics check last night with all my servos and such. When I turn on the Futaba 9z, the alarm keeps beeping and blinking. I finally figured out that the reason was because I had it in idle up mode. When I switch it to normal, it stops beeping, but the alarm light stays on. Is this normal or is there a way to disable it?

Shawn

Ahhhh you guys!

when I first saw the $10 price I actually had TEN of them selected in my cart... ..

The postage got a bit pricey and I didn't want to take the risk in case the quality was really poor..

So I changed it to 2....

When they arrived and I saw how good they were I immediately tried to order a few more... but they were out of stock and have been ever since..

If I were only allowed to keep one heli it would be the $10 heli - it is the most fun to fly.... . I love the irony in that....

Hey Shawn,

yes both Spektrum and Futaba have this safety feature.. it is normal and actually desirable..

I don't know much about other brands but the Turnigy 9X does have this feature, which learned from this review.. http://rcmodelreviews.com/turnigy9xv2review.shtml

and this video... (this guy does great reviews.. )

You don't want to connect your heli Lipo with the TX in Idle up or the heli will immediately power up and possibly injure you..

Most radios will also warn you if the throttle hold is selected...

My Futaba 8FG also has an additional safety... if the throttle joystick is not completely down when you turn it on it will beep and it will not transmit any radio signal until you close the throttle...

gryo works now....no clue if it's correct though

I used mikey's low cost 450 build video and used his setup instructions for the radio and he either left something out or his gyro works very differently.

There are 3 mix options and he said to set them to mix with themselves (ch 1 with 1, etc). This of course disables them. Without an explanation on what they do or how to use them this seemed reasonable to me.

I found http://www.sweethelis.com/setup_Heli.php which has settings for a blade cp and my radio so I don't know if they gyro mix settings are remotely close, but it does now work.

on the tx are two rotating pots, a and b, and 3 mix choices.
So currently it's at
B to channel 4 (up rate 35%, down rate 25%)
A to channel 5 (80%, 80%)
3 to 4 (40%)

I'm, guessing from the info you all posted here that B  (with proper percentages) adjust overall gyro sensitivity and A HH. (functionally moving A adjusts the center point of the tail rotor or so it seems). and 3 to 4 dials in some left tail rotor as the motor spools up

Now that we know more than we knew, anyone know if these settings are in the ballpark or what they're doing, trying to do?

Not sure about your radio but in very general terms.. you want enough gain to stop the tail from "slowly drifting" but not too much that you get a fast "Tail Wag"

I find on my Futaba radios around +65 to +70% on channel 5 works perfectly on both the HK401 and the Detrum gyros for HH mode..

in my Spektrum DX6i I use 68% and also works great in HH..

Try your settings.. and keep increasing them slowly until it just starts to tail wag, then back it off enough to stop the wag... that seems to work for me..

found a CT6 manual online that is good and written in english. it does a very good job of explaining things on the radio - the what and why as well. I always need to know the why.
so what is says - and it makes sense now I know the why - is to set mix 1 to B and 5. Now when you twist the B dial left you adjust rate sensitivity and go right to adjust HH sensitivity (or gain). Simple - once you understand **** is going on.

of course new manual means new approach to things....so I want to go back through a few things before i try a first hover.

The co pilot arrived a few minutes ago...for $150 I expected some kind of instructions, even a simple page saying "go here" on a webstie....just got several bags of parts. Argh. I could have saved some money and got teh flymentor if I wanted to be in the dark.

On the T6 manual - http://rabbitsvc.com/t6ConfigurationManual.pdf  is it.

After having the bits in hand and reading the instructions http://www.revolectrix.com/support_docs/item_1284.pdf it looks pretty easy to install and use.
There is a first time setup (using computer/usb or buy their irnet programmer) and if you have the vertical sensor that's it - fly. If you skip the vert sensor you have to do an init routine before each flight (not a big deal, but I got the sensor for that reason and because if/when I do 3D the vert sensor enables better recovery).
The led/go bit is handy as it means you can calibrate/read error/read conditions wtihout the irnet interface and it acts as a servo extension so you can locate teh main sensor on the boom (back on the horz stab fin where the struts attach). The vert sensor mounts beside your gyro, everything plugs into the flight computer then it plugs into your receiver.

Tomorrow I should be able to do a real newbie test - I got my crash gear, I mean training landing gerar today (3 ft long fiberglass rods in yellow for $1.99 each at home depot) painted up the canopy to match the blades and landing gear, even got zipties in yellow too. I must get a picture of it before I fly it while it looks all nice and pretty.   So the plan is get 'er light on the skids and see if trim is where it needs to be, how well it does (or doesn't hover) and when I'm satisfied it works then install the co-pilot gear and try it again so see what difference it makes.

I'll report back here when I know more.

Hi Guys,

Just had to share this with you.

I would have like to have said this is me flying me new heli in the backyard with the family applauding as it did some simple manoeuvres. But truth is I dont know where it is - its just great though. enjoy

http://www.gadgetvenue.com/worlds-biggest-rc-helicopter-07082328/

Thanks.. that is an amazing video.. and some of the smoothest flying I have ever seen.. what a perfect landing at 3:05...

Here is another one that I think is incredible... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5d6nQCgGTHw

Hey Rob,That link was to a crop dusting heli in Japan. I saw a very similar set of photos in one of the other forums where that exact heli killed a worker in the fields. Ambulances / police were everywhere and the heli was all smashed up with its blades all shattered, poor sucker didn't stand a chance after that thing hit him. We need to be careful with these flying lawn mowers.

proffate, i dunno if the horizontal fin is the best place to mount the sensor because it'll be vulnerable to a blade strike. i put mine near the gyro, together with the vertical sensor. make sure you put it where the flybar can't hit it either, in case it bends and comes around.

yes, I think we always need to remember that...

Even the 450's could kill you I think.. usually stop flying when the spectators start to gather...   just to be on the safe side...
