Well I've reached the goal of hovering the mcpx inverted this morning on the first go, which is the main reason I bought it.  Hopefully I can transfer this to the 450 down the track.

Great work on the Inverted witht he MCPX!... Nose in too!. wow.. you are a natural!.

It will definately transfer over to the 450's, the muscle memory is the same..  awesome to see how fast you are progressing!.

Thanks for posting the links to the new Blade Helis, I actually just saw them also and came here to post about them but you beat me to it..

But I really want one of these also now..  the DX18!  http://www.spektrumrc.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdId=SPM18000&view=test

I love that it has two TX antennas, one vertical and one horizontal in the carry handle..

Hey Jonesy
Congrats and well done on the inverted flight with the MCPX.
Every time I try that, just when I think I'm getting it, it turns ugly fast!  I only manage a few seconds and then I bail or crash, usually both. What settings do u find work best for a quick flip. BTW have you managed big loops yet?
Best Phil

Thanks Phil, definately a big step in confidence for me being able to do that on the first go.

I started practicing tail in inverted in the sim and it just didn't click.  Tried nose in and bam I had it after a few minutes, the brain in a wacky thing sometimes.  I still can't do tail in inverted on the sim.

I've still got the standard 30% expo but I've bumped the dual rates upto 85%.  If I was just doing inverted practice the higher dual rates definately make it flip faster but if I'm just fanging it around then any higher than 85% at the moment is too fast for me.

Havn't tried big loops yet.  I've been flat out at work this week.  I was up at a sparrows fart the the other morning just to get some stick time in.

Jonesy

Yeah the brain is a wacky thing.. I can do tail in inverted easily in the MCPX but the nose in is still really tricky.. Everyone told me nose in inverted was the way to start but I just couldn't do it..

I can do tail in easy with my big helis now also but nose in gets messy really fast..   Maybe cause I'm left handed.. who knows.. but great work all around.

Brian! I am giving you crap now because it has been bugging me when I watch your videos. Would you PLEASE bend your antenna 90 degrees?! It won't be an issue flying in th yard, and close to you, but if you start flying at the field, with birds that can go farther away, you are going to get locked out, and lose the bird.

I don't know the physics behind it, but the 2.4 systems need to transmit out the side of the antenna (to put it VERY simply). That's why they all have the hinge in them. If you keep it straight up, then you need to hold the transmitter with the antenna pointing straight up, and nobody that I know flies like that.
Sorry to make you my whipping boy on this, but I don't really want to see a video of your trex 500 flying though a crowd of small children as you scream in trerror "I don't have it!" among other explitives.

welcome back BTW....

jeff

I have busted his chops about that many times... heh heh..

See Pic below from any of the Futaba radio manuals.

The DX18 has a horizontal and a vertical antenna.. very very cool!.

here is the text direct from the Spektrum website...

Durable Dual Diversity Antenna

The DX18 is the first Spektrum transmitter with a Dual Diversity antenna. Essentially two antennas in one, it consists of vertical and horizontal arrays mounted perpendicular to each other for superior protection from signal fades. The horizontal array is housed in the durable carrying grip on the back.

I have to say though that the Blade 300X at $370 is good value, because the AR7200BX (the recvr and BeastX in one) that it comes with is not only really great but it alone costs $250 so the heli is then only $120.

Thereafter if you thought the Blade 300X was a bit of a dud, you could put the AR7200BX on your best heli and stick a $50 ZYX unit and a spare rcvr on the blade 300.  Besides, I'm thinking that the $2 million worth of spares I bought for the Blade SR during my Newb over exuberance period will fit the Blade 300. So Win Win!!

I think I'm a buyer of the 300. But definitely not a buyer of the Blade 500X man that is way too exxy. You could have change over from a Gaui X5 for that!

Regards,
Phil

Yes, I agree the 300X looks very tempting.. might be my first FBL heli (aside from the MCPXs)

I still like the SR based Huey though..

That is a nice bird there Hugj.  I think your head speed is a little low, even Mary said it looked to slow.  I hope we can get some time to fly on Saturday between raindrops.
B

P.S. @ Brian...I did cheat a little, but Rutger Hauer said "Lost in time, like tears in the rain" during his 'Death Speach' in the movie Blade Runner.

@ Jeff - Yah, I need to crook my antenna. I just hate to as it looks like a "Dog's Ear" flapped back! However, the specter that you and Rob created of my crashing my 500 into a bevy of Girls Scouts has scared me straight!!

Also, thanx for your generous offer to help set up the ZYX (like you had a choice

I will give you a call next week in the PM hours!

@ Rob - DX18!!! My heads gonna explode!! (note the DX6i scroll-n-press revisited. a much better measure to select than the DX7)

@ Shawn - This is going to sound KRAZY but just FLY THE LITTLE BUGGER!!! (in the grass)
EDIT: Did you do the grommet mod on the swash to correct wobble?? Also, I just used the settings in the book EXACTLY and it flies like a maniac!

@ Hugj - What a cool heli. The head speed is too low, raise it and it will fix yer problem!

@ Bryan - For shame, for cheatin'! It's a great line in a great flick though!

Best to all!

speaking of quads, my friend bought the eflite mqx.
I tried flying it around the shop a little bit, and all I had to say was "meh".

It is really stable, easy to fly, and good for orientation training, but I think I would get bored with it very quickly, simply because it doesn't have the ability to be upgraded with GPS, or FPV. Those are the things I thought made quads cool.

Although, I don't deny that they have come a long way with gyro tech. Just to see that a machine like this can be so stable, or fly at all is pretty amazing. I don't think it would be even possible even five years ago.

Rob, what exactly are you going to do with 18 channels? Make the cylon missles functional? You would STILL have left over channels after that. Now, if you could mix them together, and get 2 helis to fly at the same time, and get them to do a syncronized swimmer thing.....THAT would be cool. But.......Throoooooootllllllleeeee HooooooollllllllllDDDD! $#I^, that was expensive!

Hiya Jeff!

I'm kinda missin' the ole Big Outdoor Lama and it's great stability for the key fob camera platform!

For the price (and it's durability) I thinx I will treat myself to one my birthday early next month.

I would like something that you can fly around the campground and not have to worry about hitting someone OUR something.

Further, my "friend" Simon advised that he has all his parts a commin' for FBL!

I'm giddy with excitement!

Hi Jeff,

Read with interest this post on the mqx quad.  I kinda figured the same thing, after the novelty of the quad wore off it would be a little boring to fly.

I might be still tempted, not sure if they are available in Australia yet though.. I'm in the USA for a little longer so if I can find one.....??

I will never ever use 18 channels, probably not even 8...    Six is all I will ever need for the helis and planes... but I just think the DX18 looks kinda cool...

I got a silly question for you guys. I got the microheli alum. xl tail setup and want to install it. It is hollow so that you can run the wires through the tailboom like stock. My problem is that Im not real sure I want to start doing solder work to this small stuff.

Can I just wrap the wires around the boom like on the carbon setup or will the alum. mess with the signal, voltage, etc.? The reason I ask is that I bought a extra alum. boom and in case of a problem, I dont want to have to do all the solder stuff again.

Hey Brian thanks for the info. i tryed differend head speeds up to 2100 rpm at which she was crazy The bird likes about 1850.
As far as the chicken wobble Bryan here hit it right I had something wrong. I had the fly bar mixing arms off about 1/8 in from each other.
I fixed that and no more wobble, I talked to my friend at the lhs. and he and i determined that the cyclic servos were at fault for the pitch changing.
I could put three to 5 clicks in wait and then away she went too fast and responded down and wait . too slow and under powered servos and too slow.
He also recomended useing a seperate bec instead of the one on the esc, Bryan agreed.
Now i just have to bite the bullet and do it.

Hey Shawn,

Yes you can wrap them around the boom, no drama's everyone does, as soldering those would be fraut with danger.

Hey All,

Wow those little quad copters were super cool.

Update on my Blinged/pimped MCPX. It looks beautiful and looks more like a real heli in miniature, BUT and its a BIG BUT, I've turned it into a cross between a heli and a vibrator, I guess its a flying vibrator, it vibrates from head to toe super fast, such that it looks blurry in the air. So that is a rebuild as this bling is supposed to reduce vibrations! Dont know what happened as I followed the instructions perfectly. I've taken a few photos and will try and post. I wasnt sure if my Tarot photos made it as when I look at this thread in the office the photos are there and yet when I view it on my laptop at home they aren't there, just the little red cross.

Have a good weekend,

Phil

Hi Rob,

Just spent last night on an airboat til the wee hours of this morning. Urrrrrgh I'm tired!

I bought batteries from these two vendors.

HobbyKing (they are back ordered, hence the two different vendors) and this and (Hongkong vendor) Ebay

It is almost giving me pain to go back to the folks at Eflite considering my negative experience with the SR but I have to give them their due as the MCP X has been a forking blast and I expect the MQX to be as fun (albeit in a different way)!

b

PS Also picked up one of these from HK to tame the charging process!

Yes, I have to agree, its a great radio and it grew on me the more I used it.

Not sure how you hold your radio but if you are a thumb flyer I can highly recommend these from Hobbyking http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=9889

They give you about 2000% more grip than the stock sticks and there is no chance of your thumb slipping.. Gives the radio a much better feel.. see my vid..

There is a supplier in www.modelflight.com.au="" href="">Australia with the MQX, can anyone recommend the best place to buy one from Tuscon AZ or Los Angeles CA ?

PS Also picked up one of these from HK to tame the charging process!

Hope you got some sleep... NVG's would be cool on the airboat at night..

Thanks for the battery links.. I'll order some too.. Didn't see the MQX at Hobbytown USA in Tuscon.. I'll be in LAX tomorrow so will try locally..

Just out of curiosity how do you guys store your lipo batteries? Ive seen some pretty horrific pics of lipo fires mostly from a charge that has gone wrong, I personally store my lipos in a 50 cal ammo box just for peace of mind.
